    Enhanced evolutionary algorithm with cuckoo search for nurse scheduling and rescheduling problem

    Nurse shortage, uncertain absenteeism and stress are the constituents of an unhealthy working environment in a hospital. These matters have impact on nurses' social lives and medication errors that threaten patients' safety, which lead to nurse turnover and low quality service. To address some of the issues, utilizing the existing nurses through an effective work schedule is the best alternative. However, there exists a problem of creating undesirable and non-stable nurse schedules for nurses' shift work. Thus, this research attempts to overcome these challenges by integrating components of a nurse scheduling and rescheduling problem which have normally been addressed separately in previous studies. However, when impromptu schedule changes are required and certain numbers of constraints need to be satisfied, there is a lack of flexibility element in most of scheduling and rescheduling approaches. By embedding the element, this gives a potential platform for enhancing the Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) which has been identified as the solution approach. Therefore, to minimize the constraint violations and make little but attentive changes to a postulated schedule during a disruption, an integrated model of EA with Cuckoo Search (CS) is proposed. A concept of restriction enzyme is adapted in the CS. A total of 11 EA model variants were constructed with three new parent selections, two new crossovers, and a crossover-based retrieval operator, that specifically are theoretical contributions. The proposed EA with Discovery Rate Tournament and Cuckoo Search Restriction Enzyme Point Crossover (Dáµ£T_CSREP) model emerges as the most effective in producing 100% feasible schedules with the minimum penalty value. Moreover, all tested disruptions were solved successfully through preretrieval and Cuckoo Search Restriction Enzyme Point Retrieval (CSREPáµ£) operators. Consequently, the EA model is able to fulfill nurses' preferences, offer fair on-call delegation, better quality of shift changes for retrieval, and comprehension on the two-way dependency between scheduling and rescheduling by examining the seriousness of disruptions

    Evolutionary Algorithms in Engineering Design Optimization

    Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are population-based global optimizers, which, due to their characteristics, have allowed us to solve, in a straightforward way, many real world optimization problems in the last three decades, particularly in engineering fields. Their main advantages are the following: they do not require any requisite to the objective/fitness evaluation function (continuity, derivability, convexity, etc.); they are not limited by the appearance of discrete and/or mixed variables or by the requirement of uncertainty quantification in the search. Moreover, they can deal with more than one objective function simultaneously through the use of evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms. This set of advantages, and the continuously increased computing capability of modern computers, has enhanced their application in research and industry. From the application point of view, in this Special Issue, all engineering fields are welcomed, such as aerospace and aeronautical, biomedical, civil, chemical and materials science, electronic and telecommunications, energy and electrical, manufacturing, logistics and transportation, mechanical, naval architecture, reliability, robotics, structural, etc. Within the EA field, the integration of innovative and improvement aspects in the algorithms for solving real world engineering design problems, in the abovementioned application fields, are welcomed and encouraged, such as the following: parallel EAs, surrogate modelling, hybridization with other optimization techniques, multi-objective and many-objective optimization, etc

    A Multi Agent System for Flow-Based Intrusion Detection

    The detection and elimination of threats to cyber security is essential for system functionality, protection of valuable information, and preventing costly destruction of assets. This thesis presents a Mobile Multi-Agent Flow-Based IDS called MFIREv3 that provides network anomaly detection of intrusions and automated defense. This version of the MFIRE system includes the development and testing of a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) for feature selection that provides agents with the optimal set of features for classifying the state of the network. Feature selection provides separable data points for the selected attacks: Worm, Distributed Denial of Service, Man-in-the-Middle, Scan, and Trojan. This investigation develops three techniques of self-organization for multiple distributed agents in an intrusion detection system: Reputation, Stochastic, and Maximum Cover. These three movement models are tested for effectiveness in locating good agent vantage points within the network to classify the state of the network. MFIREv3 also introduces the design of defensive measures to limit the effects of network attacks. Defensive measures included in this research are rate-limiting and elimination of infected nodes. The results of this research provide an optimistic outlook for flow-based multi-agent systems for cyber security. The impact of this research illustrates how feature selection in cooperation with movement models for multi agent systems provides excellent attack detection and classification

    Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud

    Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithms’ performance on Amazon’s Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations.     Fuelling the zero-emissions road freight of the future: routing of mobile fuellers

    The future of zero-emissions road freight is closely tied to the sufficient availability of new and clean fuel options such as electricity and Hydrogen. In goods distribution using Electric Commercial Vehicles (ECVs) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (HFCVs) a major challenge in the transition period would pertain to their limited autonomy and scarce and unevenly distributed refuelling stations. One viable solution to facilitate and speed up the adoption of ECVs/HFCVs by logistics, however, is to get the fuel to the point where it is needed (instead of diverting the route of delivery vehicles to refuelling stations) using "Mobile Fuellers (MFs)". These are mobile battery swapping/recharging vans or mobile Hydrogen fuellers that can travel to a running ECV/HFCV to provide the fuel they require to complete their delivery routes at a rendezvous time and space. In this presentation, new vehicle routing models will be presented for a third party company that provides MF services. In the proposed problem variant, the MF provider company receives routing plans of multiple customer companies and has to design routes for a fleet of capacitated MFs that have to synchronise their routes with the running vehicles to deliver the required amount of fuel on-the-fly. This presentation will discuss and compare several mathematical models based on different business models and collaborative logistics scenarios
