Keyframe-based monocular SLAM: design, survey, and future directions
Extensive research in the field of monocular SLAM for the past fifteen years
has yielded workable systems that found their way into various applications in
robotics and augmented reality. Although filter-based monocular SLAM systems
were common at some time, the more efficient keyframe-based solutions are
becoming the de facto methodology for building a monocular SLAM system. The
objective of this paper is threefold: first, the paper serves as a guideline
for people seeking to design their own monocular SLAM according to specific
environmental constraints. Second, it presents a survey that covers the various
keyframe-based monocular SLAM systems in the literature, detailing the
components of their implementation, and critically assessing the specific
strategies made in each proposed solution. Third, the paper provides insight
into the direction of future research in this field, to address the major
limitations still facing monocular SLAM; namely, in the issues of illumination
changes, initialization, highly dynamic motion, poorly textured scenes,
repetitive textures, map maintenance, and failure recovery
High-resolution ab initio three-dimensional X-ray diffraction microscopy
Coherent X-ray diffraction microscopy is a method of imaging non-periodic
isolated objects at resolutions only limited, in principle, by the largest
scattering angles recorded. We demonstrate X-ray diffraction imaging with high
resolution in all three dimensions, as determined by a quantitative analysis of
the reconstructed volume images. These images are retrieved from the 3D
diffraction data using no a priori knowledge about the shape or composition of
the object, which has never before been demonstrated on a non-periodic object.
We also construct 2D images of thick objects with infinite depth of focus
(without loss of transverse spatial resolution). These methods can be used to
image biological and materials science samples at high resolution using X-ray
undulator radiation, and establishes the techniques to be used in
atomic-resolution ultrafast imaging at X-ray free-electron laser sources.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, submitte
Real-Time Object Removal in Augmented Reality
Diminished reality, as a sub-topic of augmented reality where digital information is overlaid on an environment, is the perceived removal of an object from an environment. Previous approaches to diminished reality used digital replacement techniques, inpainting, and multi-view homographies. However, few used a virtual representation of the real environment, limiting their domains to planar environments.
This thesis provides a framework to achieve real-time diminished reality on an augmented reality headset. Using state-of-the-art hardware, we combine a virtual representation of the real environment with inpainting to remove existing objects from complex environments.
Our work is found to be competitive with previous results, with a similar qualitative outcome under the limitations of available technology. Additionally, by implementing new texturing algorithms, a more detailed representation of the real environment is achieved
Climate Change and Its Causes, A Discussion About Some Key Issues
This article discusses the limits of the Anthropogenic Global Warming Theory
advocated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. A phenomenological
theory of climate change based on the physical properties of the data
themselves is proposed. At least 60% of the warming of the Earth observed since
1970 appears to be induced by natural cycles which are present in the solar
system. A climatic stabilization or cooling until 2030-2040 is forecast by the
phenomenological model.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figure. The full English version with the appendixes can

Airframe Noise Simulations of a Full-Scale Aircraft
Computational results for a full-scale simulation of a Gulfstream G-III aircraft are presented. In support of a NASA airframe noise flight test campaign, Exa Corporations lattice Boltzmann PowerFLOW solver was used to perform time-accurate simulations of the flow around a highly detailed, full-scale aircraft model. Free-air boundary conditions were used at a Mach number of 0.23 and a Reynolds number of 10.5 10(exp 6) based on mean aerodynamic chord. This paper documents the simulation campaign for the baseline aircraft configuration at several flight conditions, including multiple flap deflections and main landing gear deployed or retracted. The high-fidelity, synthetic data were post-processed using a Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings integral approach to estimate farfield acoustic behavior, with pressures on the model solid surface or a permeable surface enveloping the acoustic near field used as input. The numerical approach, simulation attributes, and the effects of grid resolution, gear deployment, and multiple flap deflections, are discussed as well
Vision based 3D Gesture Tracking using Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality for Improved Learning Applications
3D gesture recognition and tracking based augmented reality and virtual reality have become a big interest of research because of advanced technology in smartphones. By interacting with 3D objects in augmented reality and virtual reality, users get better understanding of the subject matter where there have been requirements of customized hardware support and overall experimental performance needs to be satisfactory. This research investigates currently various vision based 3D gestural architectures for augmented reality and virtual reality. The core goal of this research is to present analysis on methods, frameworks followed by experimental performance on recognition and tracking of hand gestures and interaction with virtual objects in smartphones. This research categorized experimental evaluation for existing methods in three categories, i.e. hardware requirement, documentation before actual experiment and datasets. These categories are expected to ensure robust validation for practical usage of 3D gesture tracking based on augmented reality and virtual reality. Hardware set up includes types of gloves, fingerprint and types of sensors. Documentation includes classroom setup manuals, questionaries, recordings for improvement and stress test application. Last part of experimental section includes usage of various datasets by existing research. The overall comprehensive illustration of various methods, frameworks and experimental aspects can significantly contribute to 3D gesture recognition and tracking based augmented reality and virtual reality.Peer reviewe
