    Multivariate Statistical Process Control Charts: An Overview

    In this paper we discuss the basic procedures for the implementation of multivariate statistical process control via control charting. Furthermore, we review multivariate extensions for all kinds of univariate control charts, such as multivariate Shewhart-type control charts, multivariate CUSUM control charts and multivariate EWMA control charts. In addition, we review unique procedures for the construction of multivariate control charts, based on multivariate statistical techniques such as principal components analysis (PCA) and partial lest squares (PLS).     Relatively Coherent Sets as a Hierarchical Partition Method

    Finite time coherent sets [8] have recently been defined by a measure based objective function describing the degree that sets hold together, along with a Frobenius-Perron transfer operator method to produce optimally coherent sets. Here we present an extension to generalize the concept to hierarchially defined relatively coherent sets based on adjusting the finite time coherent sets to use relative mesure restricted to sets which are developed iteratively and hierarchically in a tree of partitions. Several examples help clarify the meaning and expectation of the techniques, as they are the nonautonomous double gyre, the standard map, an idealized stratospheric flow, and empirical data from the Mexico Gulf during the 2010 oil spill. Also for sake of analysis of computational complexity, we include an appendic concerning the computational complexity of developing the Ulam-Galerkin matrix extimates of the Frobenius-Perron operator centrally used here

    Breathing dissipative solitons in optical microresonators

    Dissipative solitons are self-localized structures resulting from a double balance between dispersion and nonlinearity as well as dissipation and a driving force. They occur in a wide variety of fields ranging from optics, hydrodynamics to chemistry and biology. Recently, significant interest has focused on their temporal realization in driven optical microresonators, known as dissipative Kerr solitons. They provide access to coherent, chip-scale optical frequency combs, which have already been employed in optical metrology, data communication and spectroscopy. Such Kerr resonator systems can exhibit numerous localized intracavity patterns and provide rich insights into nonlinear dynamics. A particular class of solutions consists of breathing dissipative solitons, representing pulses with oscillating amplitude and duration, for which no comprehensive understanding has been presented to date. Here, we observe and study single and multiple breathing dissipative solitons in two different microresonator platforms: crystalline MgF2\mathrm{MgF_2} resonator and Si3N4\mathrm{Si_3N_4} integrated microring. We report a deterministic route to access the breathing state, which allowed for a detailed exploration of the breathing dynamics. In particular, we establish the link between the breathing frequency and two system control parameters - effective pump laser detuning and pump power. Using a fast detection, we present a direct observation of the spatiotemporal dynamics of individual solitons, revealing irregular oscillations and switching. An understanding of breathing solitons is not only of fundamental interest concerning nonlinear systems close to critical transition, but also relevant for applications to prevent breather-induced instabilities in soliton-based frequency combs.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Characterisation and optimal design of a new double sampling c chart

    [EN] This paper proposes a new double sampling scheme for c control chart (DS-c), which was designed to improve the performance of c chart or to reduce the inspection cost. The mathematical expression required to do an exact evaluation of ARL and ASN is deduced. Further, a bi-objective genetic algorithm is implemented to obtain the optimal design of the DS-c scheme. This optimisation is aimed to simultaneously minimising the error probability type II and the ASN, guaranteeing a desired level for the error probability type I. A performance comparison between the double sampling (DS), fixed parameters (FP), variable simple size (VSS) and exponential weighted moving average (EWMA) schemes for the c chart is carried out. The comparison shows that with the implementation of DS-c scheme is obtained a significant reduction of the out of control ARL with a lower ASN respect to FP and a better ARL profile than VSS and EWMA.Campuzano, MJ.; Carrión García, A.; Mosquera, J.     Tackling barriers to take-up of fuel poverty alleviation measures

    Although there has been much work around the take-up of fuel poverty alleviation programmes carried out this has generally focussed on evidence from frontline managers and other stakeholders. Any investigation with end users has been minimal. Funded by Eaga Partnership Charitable Trust, Sustainable Cities Research Institute carried out a community-based investigation into barriers and possible solutions to the uptake of fuel poverty alleviation programmes. A combination of desk-based research with frontline staff and Participatory Appraisal (PA) techniques with communities were used to carry out this research. 362 people took part in the PA and 17 frontline staff returned detailed questionnaires. 4 areas were studied: 3 with poor and one with good take-up. Additionally vulnerable groups of consumers were identified; elderly, Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups and rural consumers. Each of the 3 areas with poor take-up has a good concentration of one of the identified vulnerable groups
