    The cost reduction of power-electronic devices, the increase in their reliability, efficiency, and power capability, and lower development times, together with more demanding application requirements, has driven the development of several new inverter topologies recently introduced in the industry, particularly medium-voltage converters. New more complex inverter topologies and new application fields come along with additional control challenges, such as voltage imbalances, power-quality issues, higher efficiency needs, and fault-tolerant operation, which necessarily requires the parallel development of modulation schemes. Therefore, recently, there have been significant advances in the field of modulation of dc/ac converters, which conceptually has been dominated during the last several decades almost exclusively by classic pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods. This paper aims to concentrate and discuss the latest developments on this exciting technology, to provide insight on where the state-of-the-art stands today, and analyze the trends and challenges driving its future

They enable a commutation at substantially reduced voltages and an improved harmonic spectrum without a series connection of devices, which is the main advantage of a multi-level structure. The use of multi-level inverters contributes to the performances amelioration of the induction machine control. In fact, the use of three level inverter (or multilevel inverter) associated with DTC control can contribute to more reducing harmonics and the ripple torque and to have a high level of output voltage. A variation of DTC-SVM with a three level neutral point clamped inverter is proposed and discussed in the literature. The goal of this project is to study, evaluate and compare the DTC and the proposed DTC-SVM technique when applied to induction machines through simulations. The simulations were carried out using MATLAB/ SIMULINK simulation package. Evaluation was made based on the drive performance, which includes dynamic torque and flux responses, feasibility and the complexity of the systems

    Power Quality Enhancement in Electricity Grids with Wind Energy Using Multicell Converters and Energy Storage

    In recent years, the wind power industry is experiencing a rapid growth and more wind farms with larger size wind turbines are being connected to the power system. While this contributes to the overall security of electricity supply, large-scale deployment of wind energy into the grid also presents many technical challenges. Most of these challenges are one way or another, related to the variability and intermittent nature of wind and affect the power quality of the distribution grid. Power quality relates to factors that cause variations in the voltage level and frequency as well as distortion in the voltage and current waveforms due to wind variability which produces both harmonics and inter-harmonics. The main motivation behind work is to propose a new topology of the static AC/DC/AC multicell converter to improve the power quality in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems. Serial switching cells have the ability to achieve a high power with lower-size components and improve the voltage waveforms at the input and output of the converter by increasing the number of cells. Furthermore, a battery energy storage system is included and a power management strategy is designed to ensure the continuity of power supply and consequently the autonomy of the proposed system. The simulation results are presented for a 149.2 kW wind turbine induction generator system and the results obtained demonstrate the reduced harmonics, improved transient response, and reference tracking of the voltage output of the wind energy conversion system.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Multilevel inverter based electric traction drives

    Electric Railway Traction Drive has been introduced as a replacement to the existing steam and diesel run locomotives. Generally, an electric railway system requires a transformer to step down the high voltage (25 kV, 50 Hz) to the low voltage level (400 V, 50 Hz) which is fed to the traction motors. This transformer adds extra weight to the system along with the several losses and hence reduced efficiency. The railway electric traction requires high voltage operation. This can be achieved with the help of multilevel inverter (MLI) which eliminates the need of transformer in the railway traction system and also results in the reduction of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the voltage to be supplied to the traction motors. In this paper, various modulation techniques of cascaded H-bridge inverter are analyzed, which can reduce THD for three-level inverter to multilevel topologies. Three methodologies adopting phase shifted carrier pulse width modulation, the level shifted carrier pulse width modulation and selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation concepts have been employed in this paper. The simulation of different modulation techniques has been done using MATLAB/SIMULINK. It was found that SHE modulation technique results in a lower value of THD. An eleven-level inverter with SHE modulation technique is used for electric traction drive; plugging and a combination of capacitive braking and DC injection braking method are employed for braking purpose. Different control methods like V/f Control and Direct Torque Control (DTC) are employed for speed control of traction motor. In DTC torque and flux was controlled directly by using required voltage vectors

    A Transformerless PCB Based Medium-Voltage Multilevel Power Converter with A DC Capacitor Balancing Circuit and Algorithm

    This dissertation presents a new method of constructing a transformerless, voltage-sourced, medium-voltage multilevel converter using existing discrete power semiconductor devices and printed circuit board technology. While the approach is general, it is particularly well-suited for medium-voltage converters and motor-drives in the 4.16 kV, 500 - 1000 kW range. A novel way of visualizing the power stage topology is developed which allows simplified mechanical layouts while managing the commutation paths. Using so many discrete devices typically drives cost and complexity of the gate-drive system including its control and isolation; a gate-drive circuit is presented to address this problem. As with most multilevel topologies, the dc-link voltages must be balanced during operation. This is accomplished using an auxiliary circuit made up of the same power stage and an associated control algorithm. Experimental results are presented for a 4.16 kV, 746 kW, five-level power converter prototype. This dissertation also analyzes a new capacitor voltage-balancing converter along with a novel capacitor voltage balancing control algorithm. Analysis of the inverter system provides a new description of capacitor voltage stability as a function of system operating conditions

    Fault Diagnostic System for Cascaded H-bridge Multilevel Inverter Drives Based on Artificial Intelligent Approaches Incorporating a Reconfiguration Technique

    A fault diagnostic and reconfiguration system in a multilevel inverter drive (MLID) using artificial intelligent based techniques is developed in this dissertation. Output phase voltages of a MLID can be used as valuable information to diagnose faults and their locations. It is difficult to diagnose a MLID system using a mathematical model because MLID systems consist of many switching devices and their system complexity has a nonlinear factor. Therefore, a neural network (NN) classification is applied to the fault diagnosis of a MLID system. Multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks are used to identify the type and location of occurring faults. The principal component analysis (PCA) is utilized in the feature extraction process to reduce the NN input size. A lower dimensional input space will also usually reduce the time necessary to train a NN, and the reduced noise may improve the mapping performance. The genetic algorithm is also applied to select the valuable principal components. The comparison among MLP neural network (NN), principal component neural network (PC-NN), and genetic algorithm based selective principal component neural network (PC-GA-NN) are performed. Proposed neural networks are evaluated with simulation test set and experimental test set. The PC-NN has improved overall classification performance from NN by about 5% points, whereas PC-GA-NN has better overall classification performance from NN by about 7.5% points. Therefore, the application of a genetic algorithm improves the classification from PC-NN by about 2.5% point. The overall classification performance of the proposed networks is more than 90%. A reconfiguration technique is also developed. The effects of using the developed reconfiguration technique at high modulation index are addressed. The developed fault diagnostic system is validated with experimental results. The developed fault diagnostic system requires about 6 cycles at 60 Hz to clear an open circuit and about 9 cycles at 60 Hz to clear a short circuit fault. The experimental results show that the developed system performs satisfactorily to detect the fault type, fault location, and reconfiguration

    Affordable quality housing is vital in developing countries to meet its growing population. Development of a new cost effective system is crucial to fulfill these demands. In view of this, a study is carried out to develope a Precast Lightweight Foamed Concrete Sandwich Panel (PLFP), as a new affordable building system. Experimental investigation and finite element analysis to study the structural behaviour of the PLFP panel under axial load is undertaken. The panel consists of two foamed concrete wythes and a polystyrene insulation layer in between the wythes. The wythes are reinforced with high tensile steel bars and tied up to each other through the polystyrene layer by steel shear connectors bent at an angle of 45º. The panels are loaded with axial load until failure. The ultimate load carrying capacity, load-lateral deflection profile, strain distributions, and the failure mode are recorded. Partial composite behaviour is observed in all specimens when the cracking load is achieved. Finite element analysis is also carried out to study the effect of slenderness ratio and shear connectors which are the major parameters that affect the strength and behaviour of the panels. An empirical equation to predict the maximum load carrying capacity of the panels is proposed. The PLFP system proposed in this research is able to achieve the intended strength for use in low rise building. Considering its lightweight and precast construction method, it is feasible to be developed further as a competitive IBS building system
