EEG-based mental workload neurometric to evaluate the impact of different traffic and road conditions in real driving settings
Car driving is considered a very complex activity, consisting of different concomitant tasks and subtasks, thus it is crucial to understand the impact of different factors, such as road complexity, traffic, dashboard devices, and external events on the driver’s behavior and performance. For this reason, in particular situations the cognitive demand experienced by the driver could be very high, inducing an excessive experienced mental workload and consequently an increasing of error commission probability. In this regard, it has been demonstrated that human error is the main cause of the 57% of road accidents and a contributing factor in most of them. In this study, 20 young subjects have been involved in a real driving experiment, performed under different traffic conditions (rush hour and not) and along different road types (main and secondary streets). Moreover, during the driving tasks different specific events, in particular a pedestrian crossing the road and a car entering the traffic flow just ahead of the experimental subject, have been acted. A Workload Index based on the Electroencephalographic (EEG), i.e., brain activity, of the drivers has been employed to investigate the impact of the different factors on the driver’s workload. Eye-Tracking (ET) technology and subjective measures have also been employed in order to have a comprehensive overview of the driver’s perceived workload and to investigate the different insights obtainable from the employed methodologies. The employment of such EEG-based Workload index confirmed the significant impact of both traffic and road types on the drivers’ behavior (increasing their workload), with the advantage of being under real settings. Also, it allowed to highlight the increased workload related to external events while driving, in particular with a significant effect during those situations when the traffic was low. Finally, the comparison between methodologies revealed the higher sensitivity of neurophysiological measures with respect to ET and subjective ones. In conclusion, such an EEG-based Workload index would allow to assess objectively the mental workload experienced by the driver, standing out as a powerful tool for research aimed to investigate drivers’ behavior and providing additional and complementary insights with respect to traditional methodologies employed within road safety research
A LightGBM-Based EEG Analysis Method for Driver Mental States Classification
Fatigue driving can easily lead to road traffic accidents and bring great harm to individuals and families. Recently, electroencephalography-
(EEG-) based physiological and brain activities for fatigue detection have been increasingly investigated.
However, how to find an effective method or model to timely and efficiently detect the mental states of drivers still remains a
challenge. In this paper, we combine common spatial pattern (CSP) and propose a light-weighted classifier, LightFD, which is
based on gradient boosting framework for EEG mental states identification. ,e comparable results with traditional classifiers,
such as support vector machine (SVM), convolutional neural network (CNN), gated recurrent unit (GRU), and large margin
nearest neighbor (LMNN), show that the proposed model could achieve better classification performance, as well as the decision
efficiency. Furthermore, we also test and validate that LightFD has better transfer learning performance in EEG classification of
driver mental states. In summary, our proposed LightFD classifier has better performance in real-time EEG mental state
prediction, and it is expected to have broad application prospects in practical brain-computer interaction (BCI)
A new perspective for the training assessment: Machine learning-based neurometric for augmented user's evaluation
Inappropriate training assessment might have either high social costs and economic impacts, especially in high risks categories, such as Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers, or Surgeons. One of the current limitations of the standard training assessment procedures is the lack of information about the amount of cognitive resources requested by the user for the correct execution of the proposed task. In fact, even if the task is accomplished achieving the maximum performance, by the standard training assessment methods, it would not be possible to gather and evaluate information about cognitive resources available for dealing with unexpected events or emergency conditions. Therefore, a metric based on the brain activity (neurometric) able to provide the Instructor such a kind of information should be very important. As a first step in this direction, the Electroencephalogram (EEG) and the performance of 10 participants were collected along a training period of 3 weeks, while learning the execution of a new task. Specific indexes have been estimated from the behavioral and EEG signal to objectively assess the users' training progress. Furthermore, we proposed a neurometric based on a machine learning algorithm to quantify the user's training level within each session by considering the level of task execution, and both the behavioral and cognitive stabilities between consecutive sessions. The results demonstrated that the proposed methodology and neurometric could quantify and track the users' progresses, and provide the Instructor information for a more objective evaluation and better tailoring of training programs. © 2017 Borghini, Aricò, Di Flumeri, Sciaraffa, Colosimo, Herrero, Bezerianos, Thakor and Babiloni
PULP-HD: Accelerating Brain-Inspired High-Dimensional Computing on a Parallel Ultra-Low Power Platform
Computing with high-dimensional (HD) vectors, also referred to as
, is a brain-inspired alternative to computing with
scalars. Key properties of HD computing include a well-defined set of
arithmetic operations on hypervectors, generality, scalability, robustness,
fast learning, and ubiquitous parallel operations. HD computing is about
manipulating and comparing large patterns-binary hypervectors with 10,000
dimensions-making its efficient realization on minimalistic ultra-low-power
platforms challenging. This paper describes HD computing's acceleration and its
optimization of memory accesses and operations on a silicon prototype of the
PULPv3 4-core platform (1.5mm, 2mW), surpassing the state-of-the-art
classification accuracy (on average 92.4%) with simultaneous 3.7
end-to-end speed-up and 2 energy saving compared to its single-core
execution. We further explore the scalability of our accelerator by increasing
the number of inputs and classification window on a new generation of the PULP
architecture featuring bit-manipulation instruction extensions and larger
number of 8 cores. These together enable a near ideal speed-up of 18.4
compared to the single-core PULPv3
A Classification Model for Sensing Human Trust in Machines Using EEG and GSR
Today, intelligent machines \emph{interact and collaborate} with humans in a
way that demands a greater level of trust between human and machine. A first
step towards building intelligent machines that are capable of building and
maintaining trust with humans is the design of a sensor that will enable
machines to estimate human trust level in real-time. In this paper, two
approaches for developing classifier-based empirical trust sensor models are
presented that specifically use electroencephalography (EEG) and galvanic skin
response (GSR) measurements. Human subject data collected from 45 participants
is used for feature extraction, feature selection, classifier training, and
model validation. The first approach considers a general set of
psychophysiological features across all participants as the input variables and
trains a classifier-based model for each participant, resulting in a trust
sensor model based on the general feature set (i.e., a "general trust sensor
model"). The second approach considers a customized feature set for each
individual and trains a classifier-based model using that feature set,
resulting in improved mean accuracy but at the expense of an increase in
training time. This work represents the first use of real-time
psychophysiological measurements for the development of a human trust sensor.
Implications of the work, in the context of trust management algorithm design

Exploring Cognitive States: Methods for Detecting Physiological Temporal Fingerprints
Cognitive state detection and its relationship to observable physiologically telemetry has been utilized for many human-machine and human-cybernetic applications. This paper aims at understanding and addressing if there are unique psychophysiological patterns over time, a physiological temporal fingerprint, that is associated with specific cognitive states. This preliminary work involves commercial airline pilots completing experimental benchmark task inductions of three cognitive states: 1) Channelized Attention (CA); 2) High Workload (HW); and 3) Low Workload (LW). We approach this objective by modeling these "fingerprints" through the use of Hidden Markov Models and Entropy analysis to evaluate if the transitions over time are complex or rhythmic/predictable by nature. Our results indicate that cognitive states do have unique complexity of physiological sequences that are statistically different from other cognitive states. More specifically, CA has a significantly higher temporal psychophysiological complexity than HW and LW in EEG and ECG telemetry signals. With regards to respiration telemetry, CA has a lower temporal psychophysiological complexity than HW and LW. Through our preliminary work, addressing this unique underpinning can inform whether these underlying dynamics can be utilized to understand how humans transition between cognitive states and for improved detection of cognitive states
Estimating Cognitive Workload in an Interactive Virtual Reality Environment Using Electrophysiological and Kinematic Activity
As virtual reality (VR) technology continues to gain prominence in commercial, educational, recreational and research applications, there is increasing interest in incorporating physiological sensors in VR devices for passive user-state monitoring to eventually increase the sense of immersion. By recording physiological signals such as the electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyography (EMG) or kinematic parameters during the use of a VR device, the user’s interactions in the virtual environment could be adapted in real time based on the user’s cognitive state. This dissertation evaluates the feasibility of passively monitoring cognitive workload via electrophysiological and kinematic activity while performing a classical n-back task in an interactive VR environment. The results indicate that scalp measurements of electrical activity and controller and headset tracking of kinematic activity can effectively discriminate three workload levels. Since motion and muscle tension can create co-varying task-related artifacts in EEG sensors mounted to the VR headset, decontamination algorithms were developed. The newly developed warp correlation filter (WCF) and linear regression denoising were applied on EEG, which could significantly decrease the influence of these artifacts. Analysis of the scalp recorded spectrum suggest two transient activity (termed pulse-decay effects) that impact feature extraction, modeling, and overall interpretation of workload estimation from scalp recordings. The best classification accuracy could be achieved by combining EMG, EEG and kinematic activity features using an artificial neural network (ANN)
Cognitive state monitoring and the design of adaptive instruction in digital environments: lessons learned from cognitive workload assessment using a passive brain-computer interface approach
According to Cognitive Load Theory (CLT), one of the crucial factors for successful learning is the type and amount of working-memory load (WML) learners experience while studying instructional materials. Optimal learning conditions are characterized by providing challenges for learners without inducing cognitive over- or underload. Thus, presenting instruction in a way that WML is constantly held within an optimal range with regard to learners' working-memory capacity might be a good method to provide these optimal conditions. The current paper elaborates how digital learning environments, which achieve this goal can be developed by combining approaches from Cognitive Psychology, Neuroscience, and Computer Science. One of the biggest obstacles that needs to be overcome is the lack of an unobtrusive method of continuously assessing learners' WML in real-time. We propose to solve this problem by applying passive Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) approaches to realistic learning scenarios in digital environments. In this paper we discuss the methodological and theoretical prospects and pitfalls of this approach based on results from the literature and from our own research. We present a strategy on how several inherent challenges of applying BCIs to WML and learning can be met by refining the psychological constructs behind WML, by exploring their neural signatures, by using these insights for sophisticated task designs, and by optimizing algorithms for analyzing electroencephalography (EEG) data. Based on this strategy we applied machine-learning algorithms for cross-task classifications of different levels of WML to tasks that involve studying realistic instructional materials.
