Distributed Cognitive RAT Selection in 5G Heterogeneous Networks: A Machine Learning Approach
The leading role of the HetNet (Heterogeneous Networks) strategy as the key Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture for future 5G networks poses serious challenges to the current cell selection mechanisms used in cellular networks. The max-SINR algorithm, although effective historically for performing the most essential networking function of wireless networks, is inefficient at best and obsolete at worst in 5G HetNets. The foreseen embarrassment of riches and diversified propagation characteristics of network attachment points spanning multiple Radio Access Technologies (RAT) requires novel and creative context-aware system designs. The association and routing decisions, in the context of single-RAT or multi-RAT connections, need to be optimized to efficiently exploit the benefits of the architecture. However, the high computational complexity required for multi-parametric optimization of utility functions, the difficulty of modeling and solving Markov Decision Processes, the lack of guarantees of stability of Game Theory algorithms, and the rigidness of simpler methods like Cell Range Expansion and operator policies managed by the Access Network Discovery and Selection Function (ANDSF), makes neither of these state-of-the-art approaches a favorite. This Thesis proposes a framework that relies on Machine Learning techniques at the terminal device-level for Cognitive RAT Selection. The use of cognition allows the terminal device to learn both a multi-parametric state model and effective decision policies, based on the experience of the device itself. This implies that a terminal, after observing its environment during a learning period, may formulate a system characterization and optimize its own association decisions without any external intervention. In our proposal, this is achieved through clustering of appropriately defined feature vectors for building a system state model, supervised classification to obtain the current system state, and reinforcement learning for learning good policies. This Thesis describes the above framework in detail and recommends adaptations based on the experimentation with the X-means, k-Nearest Neighbors, and Q-learning algorithms, the building blocks of the solution. The network performance of the proposed framework is evaluated in a multi-agent environment implemented in MATLAB where it is compared with alternative RAT selection mechanisms
Connectivity Management for HetNets based on the Principles of Autonomicity and Context-Awareness
An Autonomic Cross-Platform Operating Environment for On-Demand Internet Computing
The Internet has evolved into a global and ubiquitous communication medium interconnecting powerful application servers, diverse desktop computers and mobile notebooks. Along with recent developments in computer technology, such as the convergence of computing and communication devices, the way how people use computers and the Internet has changed people´s working habits and has led to new application scenarios. On the one hand, pervasive computing, ubiquitous computing and nomadic computing become more and more important since different computing devices like PDAs and notebooks may be used concurrently and alternately, e.g. while the user is on the move. On the other hand, the ubiquitous availability and pervasive interconnection of computing systems have fostered various trends towards the dynamic utilization and spontaneous collaboration of available remote computing resources, which are addressed by approaches like utility computing, grid computing, cloud computing and public computing. From a general point of view, the common objective of this development is the use of Internet applications on demand, i.e. applications that are not installed in advance by a platform administrator but are dynamically deployed and run as they are requested by the application user. The heterogeneous and unmanaged nature of the Internet represents a major challenge for the on demand use of custom Internet applications across heterogeneous hardware platforms, operating systems and network environments. Promising remedies are autonomic computing systems that are supposed to maintain themselves without particular user or application intervention. In this thesis, an Autonomic Cross-Platform Operating Environment (ACOE) is presented that supports On Demand Internet Computing (ODIC), such as dynamic application composition and ad hoc execution migration. The approach is based on an integration middleware called crossware that does not replace existing middleware but operates as a self-managing mediator between diverse application requirements and heterogeneous platform configurations. A Java implementation of the Crossware Development Kit (XDK) is presented, followed by the description of the On Demand Internet Computing System (ODIX). The feasibility of the approach is shown by the implementation of an Internet Application Workbench, an Internet Application Factory and an Internet Peer Federation. They illustrate the use of ODIX to support local, remote and distributed ODIC, respectively. Finally, the suitability of the approach is discussed with respect to the support of ODIC

Multimedia delivery in the future internet
The term “Networked Media” implies that all kinds of media including text, image, 3D graphics, audio
and video are produced, distributed, shared, managed and consumed on-line through various networks,
like the Internet, Fiber, WiFi, WiMAX, GPRS, 3G and so on, in a convergent manner [1]. This white
paper is the contribution of the Media Delivery Platform (MDP) cluster and aims to cover the Networked
challenges of the Networked Media in the transition to the Future of the Internet.
Internet has evolved and changed the way we work and live. End users of the Internet have been confronted
with a bewildering range of media, services and applications and of technological innovations concerning
media formats, wireless networks, terminal types and capabilities. And there is little evidence that the pace
of this innovation is slowing. Today, over one billion of users access the Internet on regular basis, more
than 100 million users have downloaded at least one (multi)media file and over 47 millions of them do so
regularly, searching in more than 160 Exabytes1 of content. In the near future these numbers are expected
to exponentially rise. It is expected that the Internet content will be increased by at least a factor of 6, rising
to more than 990 Exabytes before 2012, fuelled mainly by the users themselves. Moreover, it is envisaged
that in a near- to mid-term future, the Internet will provide the means to share and distribute (new)
multimedia content and services with superior quality and striking flexibility, in a trusted and personalized
way, improving citizens’ quality of life, working conditions, edutainment and safety.
In this evolving environment, new transport protocols, new multimedia encoding schemes, cross-layer inthe
network adaptation, machine-to-machine communication (including RFIDs), rich 3D content as well as
community networks and the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays are expected to generate new models of
interaction and cooperation, and be able to support enhanced perceived quality-of-experience (PQoE) and
innovative applications “on the move”, like virtual collaboration environments, personalised services/
media, virtual sport groups, on-line gaming, edutainment. In this context, the interaction with content
combined with interactive/multimedia search capabilities across distributed repositories, opportunistic P2P
networks and the dynamic adaptation to the characteristics of diverse mobile terminals are expected to
contribute towards such a vision.
Based on work that has taken place in a number of EC co-funded projects, in Framework Program 6 (FP6)
and Framework Program 7 (FP7), a group of experts and technology visionaries have voluntarily
contributed in this white paper aiming to describe the status, the state-of-the art, the challenges and the way
ahead in the area of Content Aware media delivery platforms
Hybridisation of genetic algorithm with simulated annealing for vertical-handover in heterogeneous wireless networks
To provide the seamless mobility in heterogeneous wireless networks two significant methods, simulated annealing (SA) and genetic algorithms (GAs) are hybrid. In this paradigm, vertical handovers (VHs) are necessary for seamless mobility. In this paper, the hybrid algorithm has the ability to find the optimal network to connect with a good quality of service (QoS) in accordance with the user's preferences. The intelligent algorithm was developed to provide solutions near to real time and to avoid slow and considerable computations according to the features of the mobile devices. Moreover, a cost function is used to sustain the chosen QoS during transition between networks, which is measured in terms of the bandwidth, BER, ABR, SNR and monetary cost. Simulation results presented that choosing the SA rules would minimise the cost function and the GA-SA algorithm could reduce the number of unnecessary handovers, and thereby avoid the 'Ping-Pong' effect
Impact and Challenges of Software in 2025: Collected Papers
Today (2014), software is the key ingredient of most products and services. Software generates innovation and progress in many modern industries. Software is an indispensable element of evolution, of quality of life, and of our future. Software development is (slowly) evolving from a craft to an industrial discipline. Software – and the ability to efficiently produce and evolve high-quality software – is the single most important success factor for many highly competitive industries.
Software technology, development methods and tools, and applications in more and more areas are rapidly evolving. The impact of software in 2025 in nearly all areas of life, work, relationships, culture, and society is expected to be massive.
The question of the future of software is therefore important. However – like all predictions – quite difficult. Some market forces, industrial developments, social needs, and technology trends are visible today. Heterogeneous Access: Survey and Design Considerations
As voice, multimedia, and data services are converging to IP, there is a need for a new networking architecture to support future innovations and applications. Users are consuming Internet services from multiple devices that have multiple network interfaces such as Wi-Fi, LTE, Bluetooth, and possibly wired LAN. Such diverse network connectivity can be used to increase both reliability and performance by running applications over multiple links, sequentially for seamless user experience, or in parallel for bandwidth and performance enhancements. The existing networking stack, however, offers almost no support for intelligently exploiting such network, device, and location diversity. In this work, we survey recently proposed protocols and architectures that enable heterogeneous networking support. Upon evaluation, we abstract common design patterns and propose a unified networking architecture that makes better use of a heterogeneous dynamic environment, both in terms of networks and devices. The architecture enables mobile nodes to make intelligent decisions about how and when to use each or a combination of networks, based on access policies. With this new architecture, we envision a shift from current applications, which support a single network, location, and device at a time to applications that can support multiple networks, multiple locations, and multiple devices
