People-Powered Music: Using User-Generated Tags and Structure in Recommendations
Music recommenders often rely on experts to classify song facets like genre and mood, but user-generated folksonomies hold some advantages over expert classifications—folksonomies can reflect the same real-world vocabularies and categorizations that end users employ. We present an approach for using crowd-sourced common sense knowledge to structure user-generated music tags into a folksonomy, and describe how to use this approach to make music recommendations. We then empirically evaluate our “people-powered” structured content recommender against a more traditional recommender. Our results show that participants slightly preferred the unstructured recommender, rating more of its recommendations as “perfect” than they did for our approach. An exploration of the reasons behind participants’ ratings revealed that users behaved differently when tagging songs than when evaluating recommendations, and we discuss the implications of our results for future tagging and recommendation approaches
A qualitative study of stakeholders' perspectives on the social network service environment
Over two billion people are using the Internet at present, assisted by the mediating activities of software agents which deal with the diversity and complexity of information. There are, however, ethical issues due to the monitoring-and-surveillance, data mining and autonomous nature of software agents. Considering the context, this study aims to comprehend stakeholders' perspectives on the social network service environment in order to identify the main considerations for the design of software agents in social network services in the near future. Twenty-one stakeholders, belonging to three key stakeholder groups, were recruited using a purposive sampling strategy for unstandardised semi-structured e-mail interviews. The interview data were analysed using a qualitative content analysis method. It was possible to identify three main considerations for the design of software agents in social network services, which were classified into the following categories: comprehensive understanding of users' perception of privacy, user type recognition algorithms for software agent development and existing software agents enhancement
PERSONALIZED POINT OF INTEREST RECOMMENDATIONS WITH PRIVACY-PRESERVING TECHNIQUES
Location-based services (LBS) have become increasingly popular, with millions of people using mobile devices to access information about nearby points of interest (POIs). Personalized POI recommender systems have been developed to assist users in discovering and navigating these POIs. However, these systems typically require large amounts of user data, including location history and preferences, to provide personalized recommendations.
The collection and use of such data can pose significant privacy concerns. This dissertation proposes a privacy-preserving approach to POI recommendations that address these privacy concerns. The proposed approach uses clustering, tabular generative adversarial networks, and differential privacy to generate synthetic user data, allowing for personalized recommendations without revealing individual user data. Specifically, the approach clusters users based on their fuzzy locations, generates synthetic user data using a tabular generative adversarial network and perturbs user data with differential privacy before it is used for recommendation.
The proposed approaches achieve well-balanced trade-offs between accuracy and privacy preservation and can be applied to different recommender systems. The approach is evaluated through extensive experiments on real-world POI datasets, demonstrating that it is effective in providing personalized recommendations while preserving user privacy. The results show that the proposed approach achieves comparable accuracy to traditional POI recommender systems that do not consider privacy while providing significant privacy guarantees for users.
The research\u27s contribution is twofold: it compares different methods for synthesizing user data specifically for POI recommender systems and offers a general privacy-preserving framework for different recommender systems. The proposed approach provides a novel solution to the privacy concerns of POI recommender systems, contributes to the development of more trustworthy and user-friendly LBS applications, and can enhance the trust of users in these systems
Social Relations and Methods in Recommender Systems: A Systematic Review
With the constant growth of information, data sparsity problems, and cold start have become a complex problem in obtaining accurate recommendations. Currently, authors consider the user's historical behavior and find contextual information about the user, such as social relationships, time information, and location. In this work, a systematic review of the literature on recommender systems that use the information on social relationships between users was carried out. As the main findings, social relations were classified into three groups: trust, friend activities, and user interactions. Likewise, the collaborative filtering approach was the most used, and with the best results, considering the methods based on memory and model. The most used metrics that we found, and the recommendation methods studied in mobile applications are presented. The information provided by this study can be valuable to increase the precision of the recommendations
Supporting lay users in privacy decisions when sharing sensitive data
The first part of the thesis focuses on assisting users in choosing their privacy settings, by using machine learning to derive the optimal set of privacy settings for the user. In contrast to other work, our approach uses context factors as well as individual factors to provide a personalized set of privacy settings. The second part consists of a set of intelligent user interfaces to assist the users throughout the complete privacy journey, from defining friend groups that allow targeted information sharing; through user interfaces for selecting information recipients, to find possible errors or unusual settings, and to refine them; up to mechanisms to gather in-situ feedback on privacy incidents, and investigating how to use these to improve a user’s privacy in the future. Our studies have shown that including tailoring the privacy settings significantly increases the correctness of the predicted privacy settings; whereas the user interfaces have been shown to significantly decrease the amount of unwanted disclosures.Insbesondere nach den jüngsten Datenschutzskandalen in sozialen Netzwerken wird der Datenschutz für Benutzer immer wichtiger. Obwohl die meisten Benutzer behaupten Wert auf Datenschutz zu legen, verhalten sie sich online allerdings völlig anders: Sie lassen die meisten Datenschutzeinstellungen der online genutzten Dienste, wie z. B. von sozialen Netzwerken oder Diensten zur Standortfreigabe, unberührt und passen sie nicht an ihre Datenschutzanforderungen an. In dieser Arbeit werde ich einen Ansatz zur Lösung dieses Problems vorstellen, der auf zwei verschiedenen Säulen basiert. Der erste Teil konzentriert sich darauf, Benutzer bei der Auswahl ihrer Datenschutzeinstellungen zu unterstützen, indem maschinelles Lernen verwendet wird, um die optimalen Datenschutzeinstellungen für den Benutzer abzuleiten. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Arbeiten verwendet unser Ansatz Kontextfaktoren sowie individuelle Faktoren, um personalisierte Datenschutzeinstellungen zu generieren. Der zweite Teil besteht aus einer Reihe intelligenter Benutzeroberflächen, die die Benutzer in verschiedene Datenschutzszenarien unterstützen. Dies beginnt bei einer Oberfläche zur Definition von Freundesgruppen, die im Anschluss genutzt werden können um einen gezielten Informationsaustausch zu ermöglichen, bspw. in sozialen Netzwerken; über Benutzeroberflächen um die Empfänger von privaten Daten auszuwählen oder mögliche Fehler oder ungewöhnliche Datenschutzeinstellungen zu finden und zu verfeinern; bis hin zu Mechanismen, um In-Situ- Feedback zu Datenschutzverletzungen zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Entstehung zu sammeln und zu untersuchen, wie diese verwendet werden können, um die Privatsphäreeinstellungen eines Benutzers anzupassen. Unsere Studien haben gezeigt, dass die Verwendung von individuellen Faktoren die Korrektheit der vorhergesagten Datenschutzeinstellungen erheblich erhöht.
