Hypersonic Research Vehicle (HRV) real-time flight test support feasibility and requirements study. Part 2: Remote computation support for flight systems functions
The requirements are assessed for the use of remote computation to support HRV flight testing. First, remote computational requirements were developed to support functions that will eventually be performed onboard operational vehicles of this type. These functions which either cannot be performed onboard in the time frame of initial HRV flight test programs because the technology of airborne computers will not be sufficiently advanced to support the computational loads required, or it is not desirable to perform the functions onboard in the flight test program for other reasons. Second, remote computational support either required or highly desirable to conduct flight testing itself was addressed. The use is proposed of an Automated Flight Management System which is described in conceptual detail. Third, autonomous operations is discussed and finally, unmanned operations

Cluster-based feedback control of turbulent post-stall separated flows
We propose a novel model-free self-learning cluster-based control strategy
for general nonlinear feedback flow control technique, benchmarked for
high-fidelity simulations of post-stall separated flows over an airfoil. The
present approach partitions the flow trajectories (force measurements) into
clusters, which correspond to characteristic coarse-grained phases in a
low-dimensional feature space. A feedback control law is then sought for each
cluster state through iterative evaluation and downhill simplex search to
minimize power consumption in flight. Unsupervised clustering of the flow
trajectories for in-situ learning and optimization of coarse-grained control
laws are implemented in an automated manner as key enablers. Re-routing the
flow trajectories, the optimized control laws shift the cluster populations to
the aerodynamically favorable states. Utilizing limited number of sensor
measurements for both clustering and optimization, these feedback laws were
determined in only iterations. The objective of the present work is not
necessarily to suppress flow separation but to minimize the desired cost
function to achieve enhanced aerodynamic performance. The present control
approach is applied to the control of two and three-dimensional separated flows
over a NACA 0012 airfoil with large-eddy simulations at an angle of attack of
, Reynolds number and free-stream Mach number . The optimized control laws effectively minimize the flight power
consumption enabling the flows to reach a low-drag state. The present work aims
to address the challenges associated with adaptive feedback control design for
turbulent separated flows at moderate Reynolds number.Comment: 32 pages, 18 figure
1992 NASA Life Support Systems Analysis workshop
The 1992 Life Support Systems Analysis Workshop was sponsored by NASA's Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST) to integrate the inputs from, disseminate information to, and foster communication among NASA, industry, and academic specialists. The workshop continued discussion and definition of key issues identified in the 1991 workshop, including: (1) modeling and experimental validation; (2) definition of systems analysis evaluation criteria; (3) integration of modeling at multiple levels; and (4) assessment of process control modeling approaches. Through both the 1991 and 1992 workshops, NASA has continued to seek input from industry and university chemical process modeling and analysis experts, and to introduce and apply new systems analysis approaches to life support systems. The workshop included technical presentations, discussions, and interactive planning, with sufficient time allocated for discussion of both technology status and technology development recommendations. Key personnel currently involved with life support technology developments from NASA, industry, and academia provided input to the status and priorities of current and future systems analysis methods and requirements
4-dimensional trajectory generation algorithms for RPAS mission management systems
This paper presents the algorithms enabling real-time 4-Dimensional Flight Trajectory (4DT) functionalities in Next Generation Mission Management Systems (NG-MMS), which are the core element of future Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) avionics. In particular, the algorithms are employed for multi-objective optimisation of 4DT intents in various operational scenarios spanning from online strategic to tactical and emergency tasks. The adopted formulation of the multi-objective 4DT optimisation problem includes a number of environmental objectives and operational constraints. In particular, this paper describes the algorithm for planning of 4DT based on a multi-objective optimisation approach and the generalised expression of the cost function adopted for penalties associated with specific airspace volumes, accounting for weather, condensation trails and noise models
Optimization of micropillar sequences for fluid flow sculpting
Inertial fluid flow deformation around pillars in a microchannel is a new
method for controlling fluid flow. Sequences of pillars have been shown to
produce a rich phase space with a wide variety of flow transformations.
Previous work has successfully demonstrated manual design of pillar sequences
to achieve desired transformations of the flow cross-section, with experimental
validation. However, such a method is not ideal for seeking out complex
sculpted shapes as the search space quickly becomes too large for efficient
manual discovery. We explore fast, automated optimization methods to solve this
problem. We formulate the inertial flow physics in microchannels with different
micropillar configurations as a set of state transition matrix operations.
These state transition matrices are constructed from experimentally validated
streamtraces. This facilitates modeling the effect of a sequence of
micropillars as nested matrix-matrix products, which have very efficient
numerical implementations. With this new forward model, arbitrary micropillar
sequences can be rapidly simulated with various inlet configurations, allowing
optimization routines quick access to a large search space. We integrate this
framework with the genetic algorithm and showcase its applicability by
designing micropillar sequences for various useful transformations. We
computationally discover micropillar sequences for complex transformations that
are substantially shorter than manually designed sequences. We also determine
sequences for novel transformations that were difficult to manually design.
