    LEGaTO: first steps towards energy-efficient toolset for heterogeneous computing

    Developing Globally-Asynchronous Locally- Synchronous Systems through the IOPT-Flow Framework

    Throughout the years, synchronous circuits have increased in size and com-plexity, consequently, distributing a global clock signal has become a laborious task. Globally-Asynchronous Locally-Synchronous (GALS) systems emerge as a possible solution; however, these new systems require new tools. The DS-Pnet language formalism and the IOPT-Flow framework aim to support and accelerate the development of cyber-physical systems. To do so it offers a tool chain that comprises a graphical editor, a simulator and code gener-ation tools capable of generating C, JavaScript and VHDL code. However, DS-Pnets and IOPT-Flow are not yet tuned to handle GALS systems, allowing for partial specification, but not a complete one. This dissertation proposes extensions to the DS-Pnet language and the IOPT-Flow framework in order to allow development of GALS systems. Addi-tionally, some asynchronous components were created, these form interfaces that allow synchronous blocks within a GALS system to communicate with each other

    Asynchronous 3D (Async3D): Design Methodology and Analysis of 3D Asynchronous Circuits

    This dissertation focuses on the application of 3D integrated circuit (IC) technology on asynchronous logic paradigms, mainly NULL Convention Logic (NCL) and Multi-Threshold NCL (MTNCL). It presents the Async3D tool flow and library for NCL and MTNCL 3D ICs. It also analyzes NCL and MTNCL circuits in 3D IC. Several FIR filter designs were implement in NCL, MTNCL, and synchronous architecture to compare synchronous and asynchronous circuits in 2D and 3D ICs. The designs were normalized based on performance and several metrics were measured for comparison. Area, interconnect length, power consumption, and power density were compared among NCL, MTNCL, and synchronous designs. The NCL and MTNCL designs showed improvements in all metrics when moving from 2D to 3D. The 3D NCL and MTNCL designs also showed a balanced power distribution in post-layout analysis. This could alleviate the hotspot problem prevalently found in most 3D ICs. NCL and MTNCL have the potential to synergize well with 3D IC technology

    Fast Hardware implementation of an Hadamard Transform Using RVC-CAL Dataflow Programming

    International audienceImplementing an algorithm to hardware platforms is generally not an easy task. The algorithm, typically described in a high-level specification language, must be translated to a low-level HDL language. The difference between models of computation (sequential versus fine-grained parallel) limits the efficiency of automatic translation. On the other hand, manual implementation is time-consuming, because the designer must take care of low level details, and write test benches to test the implementation's behavior. This paper presents a global design method going from high level description to implementation. The first step consists in describing an algorithm as a dataflow program with the RVC-CAL language. Next step is the functional verification of this description using a software framework. The final step consists in an automatic generation of an efficient hardware implementation from the dataflow program. The objective was to spend the most part of the conception time in an open source software platform. We used this method to quickly prototype and generate hardware implementation of the Hadamard transform, an algorithm used in many signal processing algorithms, from an RVC-CAL description

    Reconfigurable video coding: a stream programming approach to the specification of new video coding standards

    International audienceCurrent video coding standards, and their reference implementations, are architected as large monolithic and sequential algorithms, in spite of the considerable overlap of functionality between standards, and the fact that they are frequently implemented on highly parallel computing platforms. The former leads to unnecessary complexity in the standardization process, while the latter implies that implementations have to be rebuilt from the ground up to reflect the parallel nature of the target. The upcoming Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) standard currently developed at MPEG attempts to address these issues by building a framework that supports the construction of video standards as libraries of coding tools. These libraries can be incrementally updated and extended, and the tools in them can be aggregated to form complete codecs using a streaming (or dataflow) programming model, which preserves the inherent parallelism of the coding algorithm.     Design And Synthesis Of Clockless Pipelines Based On Self-resetting Stage Logic

    For decades, digital design has been primarily dominated by clocked circuits. With larger scales of integration made possible by improved semiconductor manufacturing techniques, relying on a clock signal to orchestrate logic operations across an entire chip became increasingly difficult. Motivated by this problem, designers are currently considering circuits which can operate without a clock. However, the wide acceptance of these circuits by the digital design community requires two ingredients: (i) a unified design methodology supported by widely available CAD tools, and (ii) a granularity of design techniques suitable for synthesizing large designs. Currently, there is no unified established design methodology to support the design and verification of these circuits. Moreover, the majority of clockless design techniques is conceived at circuit level, and is subsequently so fine-grain, that their application to large designs can have unacceptable area costs. Given these considerations, this dissertation presents a new clockless technique, called self-resetting stage logic (SRSL), in which the computation of a block is reset periodically from within the block itself. SRSL is used as a building block for three coarse-grain pipelining techniques: (i) Stage-controlled self-resetting stage logic (S-SRSL) Pipelines: In these pipelines, the control of the communication between stages is performed locally between each pair of stages. This communication is performed in a uni-directional manner in order to simplify its implementation. (ii) Pipeline-controlled self-resetting stage logic (P-SRSL) Pipelines: In these pipelines, the communication between each pair of stages in the pipeline is driven by the oscillation of the last pipeline stage. Their communication scheme is identical to the one used in S-SRSL pipelines. (iii) Delay-tolerant self-resetting stage logic (D-SRSL) Pipelines: While communication in these pipelines is local in nature in a manner similar to the one used in S-SRL pipelines, this communication is nevertheless extended in both directions. The result of this bi-directional approach is an increase in the capability of the pipeline to handle stages with random delay. Based on these pipelining techniques, a new design methodology is proposed to synthesize clockless designs. The synthesis problem consists of synthesizing an SRSL pipeline from a gate netlist with a minimum area overhead given a specified data rate. A two-phase heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. The goal of the algorithm is to pipeline a given datapath by minimizing the area occupied by inter-stage latches without violating any timing constraints. Experiments with this synthesis algorithm show that while P-SRSL pipelines can reach high throughputs in shallow pipelines, D-SRSL pipelines can achieve comparable throughputs in deeper pipelines

    Many decades ago, Carver Mead established the foundations of neuromorphic systems. Neuromorphic systems are analog circuits that emulate biology. These circuits utilize subthreshold dynamics of CMOS transistors to mimic the behavior of neurons. The objective is to not only simulate the human brain, but also to build useful applications using these bio-inspired circuits for ultra low power speech processing, image processing, and robotics. This can be achieved using reconfigurable hardware, like field programmable analog arrays (FPAAs), which enable configuring different applications on a cross platform system. As digital systems saturate in terms of power efficiency, this alternate approach has the potential to improve computational efficiency by approximately eight orders of magnitude. These systems, which include analog, digital, and neuromorphic elements combine to result in a very powerful reconfigurable processing machine.Ph.D

    Guarded atomic actions and refinement in a system-on-chip development flow: bridging the specification gap with Event-B

    Modern System-on-chip (SoC) hardware design puts considerable pressure on existing design and verification flows, languages and tools. The Register Transfer Level (RTL)description, which forms the input for synchronous, logic synthesis-driven design is at too low a level of abstraction for efficient architectural exploration and re-use. The existing methods for taking a high-level paper specification and refining this specification to an implementation that meets its performance criteria is largely manual and error-prone and as RTL descriptions get larger, a systematic design method is necessary to address explicitly the timing issues that arise when applying logic synthesis to such large blocks.Guarded Atomic Actions have been shown to offer a convenient notation for describing microarchitectures that is amenable to formal reasoning and high-level synthesis. Event-B is a language and method that supports the development of specifications with automatic proof and refinement, based on guarded atomic actions. Latency-insensitive design ensures that a design composed of functionally correct components will be independent of communication latency. A method has been developed which uses Event-B for latency-insensitive SoC component and sub-system design which can be combined with high-level, component synthesis to enable architectural exploration and re-use at the specification level and to close the specification gap in the SoC hardware flow

    Automatic generation of hardware/software interfaces

    Enabling new applications for mobile devices often requires the use of specialized hardware to reduce power consumption. Because of time-to-market pressure, current design methodologies for embedded applications require an early partitioning of the design, allowing the hardware and software to be developed simultaneously, each adhering to a rigid interface contract. This approach is problematic for two reasons: (1) a detailed hardware-software interface is difficult to specify until one is deep into the design process, and (2) it prevents the later migration of functionality across the interface motivated by efficiency concerns or the addition of features. We address this problem using the Bluespec Codesign Language~(BCL) which permits the designer to specify the hardware-software partition in the source code, allowing the compiler to synthesize efficient software and hardware along with transactors for communication between the partitions. The movement of functionality across the hardware-software boundary is accomplished by simply specifying a new partitioning, and since the compiler automatically generates the desired interface specifications, it eliminates yet another error-prone design task. In this paper we present BCL, an extension of a commercially available hardware design language (Bluespec SystemVerilog), a new software compiling scheme, and preliminary results generated using our compiler for various hardware-software decompositions of an Ogg Vorbis audio decoder, and a ray-tracing application.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (NSF (#CCF-0541164))National Research Foundation of Korea (grant from the Korean Government (MEST) (#R33-10095)
