Managing contextual information in semantically-driven temporal information systems
Context-aware (CA) systems have demonstrated the provision of a robust solution for personalized information delivery in the current content-rich and dynamic information age we live in. They allow software agents to autonomously interact with users by modeling the userâs environment (e.g. profile, location, relevant public information etc.) as dynamically-evolving and interoperable contexts. There is a flurry of research activities in a wide spectrum at context-aware research areas such as managing the userâs profile, context acquisition from external environments, context storage, context representation and interpretation, context service delivery and matching of context attributes to usersâ queries etc. We propose SDCAS, a Semantic-Driven Context Aware System that facilitates public services recommendation to users at temporal location. This paper focuses on information management and service recommendation using semantic technologies, taking into account the challenges of relationship complexity in temporal and contextual information
Annotation Graphs and Servers and Multi-Modal Resources: Infrastructure for Interdisciplinary Education, Research and Development
Annotation graphs and annotation servers offer infrastructure to support the
analysis of human language resources in the form of time-series data such as
text, audio and video. This paper outlines areas of common need among empirical
linguists and computational linguists. After reviewing examples of data and
tools used or under development for each of several areas, it proposes a common
framework for future tool development, data annotation and resource sharing

ATLAS: A flexible and extensible architecture for linguistic annotation
We describe a formal model for annotating linguistic artifacts, from which we
derive an application programming interface (API) to a suite of tools for
manipulating these annotations. The abstract logical model provides for a range
of storage formats and promotes the reuse of tools that interact through this
API. We focus first on ``Annotation Graphs,'' a graph model for annotations on
linear signals (such as text and speech) indexed by intervals, for which
efficient database storage and querying techniques are applicable. We note how
a wide range of existing annotated corpora can be mapped to this annotation
graph model. This model is then generalized to encompass a wider variety of
linguistic ``signals,'' including both naturally occuring phenomena (as
recorded in images, video, multi-modal interactions, etc.), as well as the
derived resources that are increasingly important to the engineering of natural
language processing systems (such as word lists, dictionaries, aligned
bilingual corpora, etc.). We conclude with a review of the current efforts

Federation views as a basis for querying and updating database federations
This paper addresses the problem of how to query and update so-called database federations. A database federation provides for tight coupling of a collection of heterogeneous component databases into a global integrated system. This problem of querying and updating a database federation is tackled by describing a logical architecture and a general semantic framework for precise specification of such database federations, with the aim to provide a basis for implementing a federation by means of relational database views. Our approach to database federations is based on the UML/OCL data model, and aims at the integration of the underlying database schemas of the component legacy systems to a separate, newly defined integrated database schema. One of the central notions in database modelling and in constraint specifications is the notion of a database view, which closely corresponds to the notion of derived class in UML. We will employ OCL (version 2.0) and the notion of derived class as a means to treat (inter-)database constraints and database views in a federated context. Our approach to coupling component databases into a global, integrated system is based on mediation. The first objective of our paper is to demonstrate that our particular mediating system integrates component schemas without loss of constraint information. The second objective is to show that the concept of relational database view provides a sound basis for actual implementation of database federations, both for querying and updating purposes.
DAS: a data management system for instrument tests and operations
The Data Access System (DAS) is a metadata and data management software
system, providing a reusable solution for the storage of data acquired both
from telescopes and auxiliary data sources during the instrument development
phases and operations. It is part of the Customizable Instrument WorkStation
system (CIWS-FW), a framework for the storage, processing and quick-look at the
data acquired from scientific instruments. The DAS provides a data access layer
mainly targeted to software applications: quick-look displays, pre-processing
pipelines and scientific workflows. It is logically organized in three main
components: an intuitive and compact Data Definition Language (DAS DDL) in XML
format, aimed for user-defined data types; an Application Programming Interface
(DAS API), automatically adding classes and methods supporting the DDL data
types, and providing an object-oriented query language; a data management
component, which maps the metadata of the DDL data types in a relational Data
Base Management System (DBMS), and stores the data in a shared (network) file
system. With the DAS DDL, developers define the data model for a particular
project, specifying for each data type the metadata attributes, the data format
and layout (if applicable), and named references to related or aggregated data
types. Together with the DDL user-defined data types, the DAS API acts as the
only interface to store, query and retrieve the metadata and data in the DAS
system, providing both an abstract interface and a data model specific one in
C, C++ and Python. The mapping of metadata in the back-end database is
automatic and supports several relational DBMSs, including MySQL, Oracle and

Expressing the tacit knowledge of a digital library system as linked data
Library organizations have enthusiastically undertaken semantic web initiatives and in particular the data publishing as linked data. Nevertheless, different surveys report the experimental nature of initiatives and the consumer difficulty in re-using data. These barriers are a hindrance for using linked datasets, as an infrastructure that enhances the library and related information services. This paper presents an approach for encoding, as a Linked Vocabulary, the "tacit" knowledge of the information system that manages the data source. The objective is the improvement of the interpretation process of the linked data meaning of published datasets. We analyzed a digital library system, as a case study, for prototyping the "semantic data management" method, where data and its knowledge are natively managed, taking into account the linked data pillars. The ultimate objective of the semantic data management is to curate the correct consumers' interpretation of data, and to facilitate the proper re-use. The prototype defines the ontological entities representing the knowledge, of the digital library system, that is not stored in the data source, nor in the existing ontologies related to the system's semantics. Thus we present the local ontology and its matching with existing ontologies, Preservation Metadata Implementation Strategies (PREMIS) and Metadata Objects Description Schema (MODS), and we discuss linked data triples prototyped from the legacy relational database, by using the local ontology. We show how the semantic data management, can deal with the inconsistency of system data, and we conclude that a specific change in the system developer mindset, it is necessary for extracting and "codifying" the tacit knowledge, which is necessary to improve the data interpretation process
