    A reconfigurable tactile display based on polymer MEMS technology

    This research focuses on the development of polymer microfabrication technologies for the realization of two major components of a pneumatic tactile display: a microactuator array and a complementary microvalve (control) array. The concept, fabrication, and characterization of a kinematically-stabilized polymeric microbubble actuator (¡°endoskeletal microbubble actuator¡±) were presented. A systematic design and modeling procedure was carried out to generate an optimized geometry of the corrugated diaphragm to satisfy membrane deflection, force, and stability requirements set forth by the tactile display goals. A refreshable Braille cell as a tactile display prototype has been developed based on a 2x3 endoskeletal microbubble array and an array of commercial valves. The prototype can provide both a static display (which meets the displacement and force requirement of a Braille display) and vibratory tactile sensations. Along with the above capabilities, the device was designed to meet the criteria of lightness and compactness to permit portable operation. The design is scalable with respect to the number of tactile actuators while still being simple to fabricate. In order to further reduce the size and cost of the tactile display, a microvalve array can be integrated into the tactile display system to control the pneumatic fluid that actuates the microbubble actuator. A piezoelectrically-driven and hydraulically-amplified polymer microvalve has been designed, fabricated, and tested. An incompressible elastomer was used as a solid hydraulic medium to convert the small axial displacement of a piezoelectric actuator into a large valve head stroke while maintaining a large blocking force. The function of the microvalve as an on-off switch for a pneumatic microbubble tactile actuator was demonstrated.     Tactile Sensing System for Lung Tumour Localization during Minimally Invasive Surgery

    Video-assisted thoracoscopie surgery (VATS) is becoming a prevalent method for lung cancer treatment. However, VATS suffers from the inability to accurately relay haptic information to the surgeon, often making tumour localization difficult. This limitation was addressed by the design of a tactile sensing system (TSS) consisting of a probe with a tactile sensor and interfacing visualization software. In this thesis, TSS performance was tested to determine the feasibility of implementing the system in VATS. This was accomplished through a series of ex vivo experiments in which the tactile sensor was calibrated and the visualization software was modified to provide haptic information visually to the user, and TSS performance was compared using human and robot palpation methods, and conventional VATS instruments. It was concluded that the device offers the possibility of providing to the surgeon the haptic information lost during surgery, thereby mitigating one of the current limitations of VATS

    Additive manufacturing (3D print) of air-coupled diaphragm ultrasonic transdrucers

    Air-coupled ultrasound is a non-contact technology that has become increasingly common in Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and material evaluation. Normally, the bandwidth of a conventional transducer can be enhanced, but with a cost to its sensitivity. However, low sensitivity is very disadvantageous in air-coupled devices. This thesis proposes a methodology for improving the bandwidth of an air-coupled micro-machined ultrasonic transducer (MUT) without sensitivity loss by connecting a number of resonating pipes of various length to a cavity in the backplate. This design is inspired by the pipe organ musical instrument, where the resonant frequency (pitch) of each pipe is mainly determined by its length. The −6 dB bandwidth of the "pipe organ" inspired air-coupled transducer is 55.7% and 58.5% in transmitting and receiving modes, respectively, which is ∼5 times wider than a custom-built standard device. After validating the concept via a series of single element low-frequency prototypes, two improved designs: the multiple element and the high-frequency single element pipe organ transducers were simulated in order to tailor the pipe organ design to NDE applications.Although the simulated and experimental performance of the pipe organ inspired transducers are proved to be significantly better than the conventional designs, conventional micro-machined technologies are not able to satisfy their required 3D manufacturing resolution. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in using additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology to fabricate sensors and actuators due to rapid prototyping, low-cost manufacturing processes, customized features and the ability to create complex 3D geometries at micrometre scale. This work combines the ultrasonic diaphragm transducer design with a novel stereolithographic additive manufacturing technique. This includes developing a multi-material fabrication process using a commercial digital light processing printer and optimizing the formula of custom-built functional (conductive and piezoelectric) materials. A set of capacitive acoustic and ultrasonic transducers was fabricated using the additive manufacturing technology.     The objectives of 301 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included

    A Stepwise Compression-Relaxation Testing Method for Tissue Characterization and Tumor Detection Via a Two-Dimensional Tactile Sensor

    This dissertation presents a stepwise compression-relaxation (SCR) testing method built upon a two-dimensional (2D) tactile sensor for mechanical characterization of soft tissues and tumor detection. The core of the 2D sensor entails one whole polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microstructure embedded with a 3×3 sensing-plate/transducer array. A soft sample was compressed by the 2D sensor with a step incremental depth at a ramp speed, and then relaxed for certain hold time. When a soft sample was compressed by the 2D sensor, the sensing-plates translated the sample response at different tissue sites to the sensor deflections, which were registered as resistance changes by the transducer array. Instant elasticity (Einstant) and loss factor (tan δ) extracted from the measured data were used to quantify the sample elasticity and viscoelasticity, respectively. First, a three-way ANOVA analysis was conducted on the data of soft materials (PDMS/silicone rubbers) to evaluate the influence of testing parameters (incremental depth, hold time, and ramp speed) on the measured results. The results revealed that both Einstant and tan δ were significantly dependent on testing parameters. Next, the measured results on the soft tissues showed different elasticity and viscoelasticity between muscle tissues and fat/skin tissues. The measured results on the tumor tissues indicated different elasticity and viscoelasticity among the five breast tumor (BT) tissues, and between the two pancreatic tumor (PT) tissues before and after treatment. Due to the larger sample size of the BT tissues, the elasticity distribution among the measure BT tissue sites was used to determine the location, shape and size of the tumor in a BT tissue. The correlation of stress drop (Δσ) (obtained from the difference between the instant and relaxed sensor deflections at each step incremental depth) with the applied strain (ε) was used for tumor detection. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to quantitatively analyze the measured Δσ-ε relation as slope of stress drop versus applied strain (m=Δσ/ε) and coefficient of determination (R2) as a measure of the goodness of fit of the linear regression for distinguishing tumor tissue from normal tissue. The measured results on soft materials showed that m was significantly dependent on testing parameters, but R2 showed no significant dependency on testing parameters. The measured results on the tumor tissues indicated R2 was significantly varied among the center, edge and outside sites of the BT tissues. However, no difference was found between the BT outside sites and the normal tissues. R2 also revealed significant difference between before and after treatment of the PT tissues, while no difference between the PT tissues after treatment and the normal tissues. R2 of the PT tissues before treatment was significantly different from that of the BT center sites, but m failed to capture their difference. Furthermore, dummy tumors made of silicone rubbers were found to behave differently from the native tumors. In summary, the feasibility of the SCR testing method for tissue characterization and tumor detection was experimentally validated on the measured soft samples, including PDMS, silicone rubbers, porcine and bovine normal tissues, mouse BT and PT tissues. Future work will investigate the feasibility of the SCR testing method for differentiation between benign tumors and malignant tumors
