Assessing and refining mappings to RDF to improve dataset quality
RDF dataset quality assessment is currently performed primarily after data is published. However, there is neither a systematic way to incorporate its results into the dataset nor the assessment into the publishing workflow. Adjustments are manually -but rarely- applied. Nevertheless, the root of the violations which often derive from the mappings that specify how the RDF dataset will be generated, is not identified. We suggest an incremental, iterative and uniform validation workflow for RDF datasets stemming originally from (semi-) structured data (e.g., CSV, XML, JSON). In this work, we focus on assessing and improving their mappings. We incorporate (i) a test-driven approach for assessing the mappings instead of the RDF dataset itself, as mappings reflect how the dataset will be formed when generated; and (ii) perform semi-automatic mapping refinements based on the results of the quality assessment. The proposed workflow is applied to diverse cases, e.g., large, crowdsourced datasets such as DBpedia, or newly generated, such as iLastic. Our evaluation indicates the efficiency of our workflow, as it significantly improves the overall quality of an RDF dataset in the observed cases
An ontology co-design method for the co-creation of a continuous care ontology
Ontology engineering methodologies tend to emphasize the role of the knowledge engineer or require a very active role of domain experts. In this paper, a participatory ontology engineering method is described that holds the middle ground between these two 'extremes'. After thorough ethnographic research, an interdisciplinary group of domain experts closely interacted with ontology engineers and social scientists in a series of workshops. Once a preliminary ontology was developed, a dynamic care request system was built using the ontology. Additional workshops were organized involving a broader group of domain experts to ensure the applicability of the ontology across continuous care settings. The proposed method successfully actively engaged domain experts in constructing the ontology, without overburdening them. Its applicability is illustrated by presenting the co-created continuous care ontology. The lessons learned during the design and execution of the approach are also presented

Benefits and challenges of applying Semantic Web Services in the e-Government domain
Joining up services in e-Government usually implies governmental agencies acting in concert without a central control regime. This requires the sharing of scattered and heterogeneous data. Semantic Web Service (SWS) technology can help to integrate, mediate and reason between these datasets. However, since few real-world applications have been developed, it is still unclear which are the actual benefits and issues of adopting such a technology in the e-Government domain. In this paper, we contribute to raising awareness of the potential benefits in the e-Government community by analyzing motivations, requirements, and expected results, before proposing a reusable SWS-based framework. We demonstrate the application of this framework by a compelling use case: a GIS-based emergency planning system. We illustrate the obtained benefits and the key challenges which remain to be addressed
Multi Visualization and Dynamic Query for Effective Exploration of Semantic Data
Semantic formalisms represent content in a uniform way according to ontologies. This enables manipulation and reasoning via automated means (e.g. Semantic Web services), but limits the user’s ability to explore the semantic data from a point of view that originates from knowledge representation motivations. We show how, for user consumption, a visualization of semantic data according to some easily graspable dimensions (e.g. space and time) provides effective sense-making of data. In this paper, we look holistically at the interaction between users and semantic data, and propose multiple visualization strategies and dynamic filters to support the exploration of semantic-rich data.
We discuss a user evaluation and how interaction challenges could be overcome to create an effective user-centred framework for the visualization and manipulation of semantic data. The approach has been implemented and evaluated on a real company archive

Sensemaking on the Pragmatic Web: A Hypermedia Discourse Perspective
The complexity of the dilemmas we face on an organizational, societal and global scale forces us into sensemaking activity. We need tools for expressing and contesting perspectives flexible enough for real time use in meetings, structured enough to help manage longer term memory, and powerful enough to filter the complexity of extended deliberation and debate on an organizational or global scale. This has been the motivation for a programme of basic and applied action research into Hypermedia Discourse, which draws on research in hypertext, information visualization, argumentation, modelling, and meeting facilitation. This paper proposes that this strand of work shares a key principle behind the Pragmatic Web concept, namely, the need to take seriously diverse perspectives and the processes of meaning negotiation. Moreover, it is argued that the hypermedia discourse tools described instantiate this principle in practical tools which permit end-user control over modelling approaches in the absence of consensus
