    Applying revenue management to agent-based transportation planning

    We consider a multi-company, less-than-truckload, dynamic VRP based on the concept of multi-agent systems. We focus on the intelligence of one vehicle agent and especially on its bidding strategy. We address the problem how to price loads that are offered in real-time such that available capacity is used in the most profitable way taking into account possible future revenues. We develop methods to price loads dynamically based on revenue management concepts.\ud We consider a one leg problem, i.e., a vehicle travels from i to j and can wait at most Ï„ time units in which it can get additional loads from i to j. We develop a DP to price loads given a certain amount of remaining capacity and an expected number of auctions in the time-to-go. Because a DP might be impractical if parameters change frequently and bids has to be determined in real-time, we derived two approximations to speed up calculations. The performance of these approximations are compared with the performance of the DP. Besides we introduce a new measure to calculate the average vehicle utilisation in consolidated shipments. This measure can be calculated based on a limited amount of data and gives an indication of the efficiency of schedules and the performance of vehicles

    Brain Tumor Prediction using Adaptive Connected Component based GLCM and SVM Method

    A crucial stage in the diagnosis of brain disorders using magnetic resonance images is feature extraction. The feature extraction procedure is used to reduce the amount of the picture data by removing the necessary information from the segmented image. The segmentation strategy and features that are extracted have an impact on the classification algorithm's dependability. With the aid of a Support Vector Machine, texture features are retrieved in this study using a Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix, while form features are extracted using connected areas. Images of benign tumours, malignant tumours, and a normal brain all exhibit distinctive features. The classification of MR images can benefit from this change in feature values. A SVM classifier will receive the features that were thusly obtained for training and testing and further able to classify the abnormalities in brain images

    Computational Light Routing: 3D Printed Optical Fibers for Sensing and Display

    Despite recent interest in digital fabrication, there are still few algorithms that provide control over how light propagates inside a solid object. Existing methods either work only on the surface or restrict themselves to light diffusion in volumes. We use multi-material 3D printing to fabricate objects with embedded optical fibers, exploiting total internal reflection to guide light inside an object. We introduce automatic fiber design algorithms together with new manufacturing techniques to route light between two arbitrary surfaces. Our implicit algorithm optimizes light transmission by minimizing fiber curvature and maximizing fiber separation while respecting constraints such as fiber arrival angle. We also discuss the influence of different printable materials and fiber geometry on light propagation in the volume and the light angular distribution when exiting the fiber.     A Survey on Array Storage, Query Languages, and Systems

    Since scientific investigation is one of the most important providers of massive amounts of ordered data, there is a renewed interest in array data processing in the context of Big Data. To the best of our knowledge, a unified resource that summarizes and analyzes array processing research over its long existence is currently missing. In this survey, we provide a guide for past, present, and future research in array processing. The survey is organized along three main topics. Array storage discusses all the aspects related to array partitioning into chunks. The identification of a reduced set of array operators to form the foundation for an array query language is analyzed across multiple such proposals. Lastly, we survey real systems for array processing. The result is a thorough survey on array data storage and processing that should be consulted by anyone interested in this research topic, independent of experience level. The survey is not complete though. We greatly appreciate pointers towards any work we might have forgotten to mention.Comment: 44 page

    Stochastic Dynamic Vehicle Routing in the Euclidean Plane: The Multiple-Server, Capacitated Vehicle Case

    In a previous paper [12], we introduced a new model for stochastic and dynamic vehicle routing called the dynamic traveling repairman problem (DTRP), in which a vehicle traveling at constant velocity in a Euclidean region must service demands whose time of arrival, location and on-site service are stochastic. The objective is to find a policy to service demands over an infinite horizon that minimizes the expected system time (wait plus service) of the demands. We showed that the stability condition did not depend on the geometry of the service region (i.e. size, shape, etc.). In addition, we established bounds on the optimal system time and proposed an optimal policy in light traffic and several policies that have system times within a constant factor of the lower bounds in heavy traffic. We showed that the leading behavior of the optimal system time had a particularly simple form which increases much more rapidly with traffic intensity than the system time in traditional queues (e.g. M/G/1). In this paper, we extend these results in several directions. First, we propose new bounds and policies for the problem of m identical vehicles with unlimited capacity and show that in heavy traffic the system time is reduced by a factor of 1/m2 over the single server case. However, depending of the context, some of the related approaches tend to be either highly mathematical, or applied to a specific context.
