    The role of psychological reactance in smart home energy management systems

    “With an ever-growing demand for energy, our increasing consumption is producing more greenhouse gases and other pollutants, impacting climate change. One approach to reducing residential energy consumption is through the use of smart energy management systems. However, automation from smart technology inherently removes a certain amount of control from the user. If loss of control is perceived as a loss of freedom, this may lead users to experience psychological reactance when using these products. A set of experiments was conducted to assess how three features of a message notification from smart home energy management systems may induce reactance in users. In the context of a hypothetical smart thermostat, the participants responded to message notifications. The phrasing of the notification was altered depending on the assigned strength of language, type of temperature change, and justification given by the smart thermostat. Reactance was measured after exposure to the notification. Results indicated more authoritative language, temperatures outside the user’s comfort range, and a lack of justification from the thermostat had a significant effect on inducing reactance. Evidence suggested the presence of justification for the thermostat’s operations may have caused users to be more likely to accept the thermostat’s temperature change, even if that temperature was outside user preferences.     Integrative Smart Grids’ Assessment System

    The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected the energy sector. The new behavior of industrial and non-commercial consumers changes the energy consumption model. In addition, the constraints associated with the coronavirus crisis have led to environmental effects from declining economic activity. The research is based on evidence from around the world showing significant reductions in emissions and improved air quality. This situation requires rethinking the energy development strategy, particularly the construction of smart grids as a leading direction of energy development. Evaluating the efficiency of smart grids is a vital tool for disseminating successful experience in improving their management. This paper proposes an approach to a comprehensive assessment of smart grids based on a comparative analysis of existing methods, taking into account the changes that need to be considered after the experience gained from the COVID-19 pandemic. The approach provides an accurate set of efficiency indicators for assessing smart grids to account for the direct and indirect effects of smart grids’ implementation. This evaluation approach can be helpful to policymakers in developing energy efficiency programs and implementing energy policy

    Citizen quality of life can be improved through facilities and services that have been thought to ease citizen interaction with municipal authorities, offices and structures. All technologies and devices, used for developing these facilities, are the pillars of the Smart City idea: a City that adapts itself, at least in part, to citizens’ needs. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) could become the backbone of all the smart city projects. Other public services can be loaded on AMI’s to be smart and thus helping to find the affordability of investments. The paper deals with this topic by describing devices and results of a pilot project, which has been carried out in an Italian middle city (Salerno), to experience the use of RF 169MHz wM-bus based AMI. Experimental results regarding a set of about 2500 installed devices for gas and water metering, car parking management and elder tele-assistance, will be reported in detail to show convenience and problems of this approach

    Smart Tourism Destinations: Can the Destination Management Organizations Exploit Benefits of the ICTs? Evidences from a Multiple Case Study

    Recent developments of ICTs enable new ways to experience tourism and conducted to the concept of smart tourism. The adoption of cutting-edge technologies and its combination with innovative organizational models fosters cooperation, knowledge sharing, and open innovation among service providers in tourism destination. Moreover, it offers innovative services to visitors. In few words, they become smart tourism destinations. In this paper, we report first results of the SMARTCAL project aimed at conceiving a digital platform assisting Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) in providing smart tourism services. A DMO is the organization charged with managing the tourism offer of a collaborative network, made up of service providers acting in a destination. In this paper, we adopted a multiple case studies approach to analyze five Italian DMOs. Our aims were to investigate (1) if, and how, successful DMOs were able to offer smart tourism services to visitors; (2) if the ICTs adoption level was related to the collaboration level among DMO partners. First results highlighted that use of smart technologies was still in an embryonic stage of development, and it did not depend from collaboration levels

    Co-designing the knowledge management model

    This work-in-progress study reviews co-designing processes through the lens of possibility-driven design (PDD). A knowledge management model (KMM) is co-designed by facilitating the development work of senior and regional innovation actors who share ideas, experience and information in the development of smart products and services for an age-friendly smart living environment. The empirical part is divided into three stages: an orientation workshop, two panel meetings and three co-design and validation workshops where an appropriate knowledge management model is co-designed through iteration rounds. The first stage maps the regional innovation actors, relevant organisations in the region and data flows between all the parties. Ideas of suitable ways to manage knowledge are gathered from the panel meetings of the second stage and are methodologically supported by the strategic options development and analysis (SODA) approach. At the time of writing this paper, the third stage consisting of three workshops with appropriate iteration rounds is on-going. The findings of the study provide insights regarding the use of PDD activities with an inclusion of the SODA approach when facilitating the co-design of a KMM with a multi-professional group of experts.     Active Learning Augmented Folded Gaussian Model for Anomaly Detection in Smart Transportation

    Smart transportation networks have become instrumental in smart city applications with the potential to enhance road safety, improve the traffic management system and driving experience. A Traffic Message Channel (TMC) is an IoT device that records the data collected from the vehicles and forwards it to the Roadside Units (RSUs). This data is further processed and shared with the vehicles to inquire the fastest route and incidents that can cause significant delays. The failure of the TMC sensors can have adverse effects on the transportation network. In this paper, we propose a Gaussian distribution-based trust scoring model to identify anomalous TMC devices. Then we propose a semi-supervised active learning approach that reduces the manual labeling cost to determine the threshold to classify the honest and malicious devices. Extensive simulation results using real-world vehicular data from Nashville are provided to verify the accuracy of the proposed method

    'HighChest': An augmented freezer designed for smart food management and promotion of eco-efficient behaviour

    This paper introduces HighChest, an innovative smart freezer designed to promote energy efficient behavior and the responsible use of food. Introducing a novel humanâmachine interface (HMI) design developed through assessment phases and a user involvement stage, HighChest is state of the art, featuring smart services that exploit embedded sensors and Internet of things functionalities, which enhance the local capabilities of the appliance. The industrial design thinking approach followed for the advanced HMI is intended to maximize the social impact of the food management service, enhancing both the user experience of the product and the userâs willingness to adopt eco- and energy-friendly behaviors. The sensor equipment realizes automatic recognition of food by learning from the users, as well as automatic localization inside the deposit space. Moreover, it provides monitoring of the applianceâs usage, avoiding temperature and humidity issues related to improper use. Experimental tests were conducted to evaluate the localization system, and the results showed 100% accuracy for weights greater or equal to 0.5 kg. Drifts due to the lid opening and prolonged usage time were also measured, to implement automatic reset corrections

    DevOps for the Urban IoT

    Choosing the right technologies to build an urban-scale IoT system can be challenging. There is often a focus on low-level architectural details such as the scalability of message handling. In our experience building an IoT information system requires a high-level holistic approach that mixes traditional data collection from vendor-specific cloud backends, together with data collected directly from embedded hardware and mobile devices. Supporting this heterogeneous environment can prove challenging and lead to complex systems that are difficult to develop and deploy in a timely fashion. In this paper we describe how we address these challenges by proposing a three-tiered DevOps model which we used to build an information system that is capable of providing real-time analytics of Electric Vehicle (EV) mobility usage and management within a smart city project
