    A Flexible Simulation Support for Production Planning and Control in Small and Medium Enterprises

    For efficient, effective and economical production operation management in a manufacturing unit of an organization, it is essential to integrate the production planning and control system into an enterprise resource planning. Today\u27s planning systems suffer from a low range in planning data which results in unrealistic delivery times. One of the root causes is that production is influenced by uncertainties such as machine breakdowns, quality issues and the scheduling principle. Hence, it is necessary to model and simulate production planning and controls (PPC) with information dynamics in order to analyze the risks that are caused by multiple uncertainties. In this context, a new approach to simulate PPC systems is exposed in this paper, which aims at visualizing the production process and comparing key performance indicators (KPIs) as well as optimizing PPC parameters under different uncertainties in order to deal with potential risk consuming time and effort. Firstly, a production system simulation is created to quickly obtain different KPIs (e.g. on time delivery rate, quality, cost, machine utilization, WIP) under different uncertainties, which can be flexibly set by users. Secondly, an optimization experiment is conducted to optimize the parameters of PPC with regard to the different KPIs. An industrial case study is used to demonstrate the applicability and the validity of the proposed approach

    Understanding The IS Experience Cycle: A Model Of ERP Implementation

    This paper focuses on the experience cycle of information systems in organisations (Markus, Tanis, 2000). This area of research has dramatically increased since the 1970s (Lucas, 1978), but still fails to present a unified approach (DeVaujany, Fomin, 2001). Although the current literature on IS implementation offers substantial results regarding various steps of the experience cycle; there is still a significant gap to fill regarding the understanding of the process as a whole. This paper contributes to the IS field, by considering the IS experience cycle, as a process composed by three phases (chartering, project and diffusion), which cannot be understood in isolation from each other. As an illustration, this paper uses a system dynamics model to understand the implementation and more specifically focuses on the case of Enterprise Resource Planning. The paper applies a coupled pair of simple differential equations to simulate a real organisation and successfully fits the model to the observed data. The model is able to predict the implementation time under various conditions and shows the necessity of not analysing the project and diffusion phases independently from each other

    Enterprise resource planning in construction: An evaluation of recent implementations

    In a large number of construction firms, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have replaced non-integrated information systems by integrated and maintainable software. The implementation of ERP systems in the construction industry is a difficult task. So far, ERP implementations have yielded more failures than successes in this industry. Our study tries to understand the underlying factors that cause success or failure of ERP in construction by analysing how ERP fits into the IT and business strategy of a firm. Empirical research was conducted by a multiple case study of three ERP-implementations in different business environments. Based on the results of this study, propositions are developed that relate factors for the success of ERP in construction to concepts of the existing literature on IT and strategy. In the development of such a new product, there is often a lack of historical knowledge and data available to be used to perform cost estimation accurately. This is due to the fact that traditional cost estimation methods are used to predict costs only after a product model has been built, and not at an early design stage when there is little data and information available. In light of this, original equipment manufacturers are also facing critical challenges of becoming globally competitive and increasing demands from customer for continuous innovation.     Agent oriented modeling of business information systems

    Enterprise modeling is an abstract definition of processes running in enterprise using process, value, data and resource models. There are two perspectives of business modeling: process perspective and value chain perspective. Both have some advantages and disadvantages. This paper proposes a combination of both perspectives into one generic model. The model takes also social part or the enterprise system into consideration and pays attention to disturbances influencing the enterprise system. Due to heterogeneous nature of the enterprise processes the outline proposed is oriented on the modeling using agents. Several types of agents are defined for the simulation model. The agents are structured into several layers. Well known JADE platform is proposed as the modeling framework. Further research directions are summed up in conclusionprocess model, value chain model, business pattern, agent, control loop, feedback, JADE platform.

    There are many processes on Internet, on web servers, in ERP and company running an e-commerce system which can be influenced by disturbances. In order to minimize their impact it is necessary to identify and collect all disturbances, to determine their evaluation metric and to propose necessary remedies. Modifications proposed should be tested by means of modeling taking internal and external environment needs into consideration. Necessary information can be captured using the e-commerce system components monitoring. Particular system environment properties like company structure, system architecture, hardware, software, methods of connection with the supplierÂŽs e-commerce system, customer communication interface are to be taken into account. Important social indicators like legislative and economic development, development of the global information society and others should also be considered.
