A preliminary experiment definition for video landmark acquisition and tracking
Six scientific objectives/experiments were derived which consisted of agriculture/forestry/range resources, land use, geology/mineral resources, water resources, marine resources and environmental surveys. Computer calculations were then made of the spectral radiance signature of each of 25 candidate targets as seen by a satellite sensor system. An imaging system capable of recognizing, acquiring and tracking specific generic type surface features was defined. A preliminary experiment definition and design of a video Landmark Acquisition and Tracking system is given. This device will search a 10-mile swath while orbiting the earth, looking for land/water interfaces such as coastlines and rivers
A Low Temperature Nonlinear Optical Rotational Anisotropy Spectrometer for the Determination of Crystallographic and Electronic Symmetries
Nonlinear optical generation from a crystalline material can reveal the
symmetries of both its lattice structure and underlying ordered electronic
phases and can therefore be exploited as a complementary technique to
diffraction based scattering probes. Although this technique has been
successfully used to study the lattice and magnetic structures of systems such
as semiconductor surfaces, multiferroic crystals, magnetic thin films and
multilayers, challenging technical requirements have prevented its application
to the plethora of complex electronic phases found in strongly correlated
electron systems. These requirements include an ability to probe small bulk
single crystals at the micron length scale, a need for sensitivity to the
entire nonlinear optical susceptibility tensor, oblique light incidence
reflection geometry and incident light frequency tunability among others. These
measurements are further complicated by the need for extreme sample
environments such as ultra low temperatures, high magnetic fields or high
pressures. In this review we present a novel experimental construction using a
rotating light scattering plane that meets all the aforementioned requirements.
We demonstrate the efficacy of our scheme by making symmetry measurements on a
micron scale facet of a small bulk single crystal of SrIrO using
optical second and third harmonic generation.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Broadband quadrature-squeezed vacuum and nonclassical photon number correlations from a nanophotonic device
We report the first demonstrations of both quadrature squeezed vacuum and
photon number difference squeezing generated in an integrated nanophotonic
device. Squeezed light is generated via strongly driven spontaneous four-wave
mixing below threshold in silicon nitride microring resonators. The generated
light is characterized with both homodyne detection and direct measurements of
photon statistics using photon number-resolving transition edge sensors. We
measure ~dB of broadband quadrature squeezing (~dB inferred
on-chip) and ~dB of photon number difference squeezing (~dB
inferred on-chip). Nearly-single temporal mode operation is achieved, with raw
unheralded second-order correlations as high as measured
(~when corrected for noise). Multi-photon events of over 10 photons
are directly detected with rates exceeding any previous quantum optical
demonstration using integrated nanophotonics. These results will have an
enabling impact on scaling continuous variable quantum technology.Comment: Significant improvements and updates to photon number squeezing
results and discussions, including results on single temporal mode operatio
