An approach for incremental entity resolution at the example of social media data
When querying data providers on the web, one has no guarantee that they will reply within a given time. Some providers may even not answer at all. This makes it infeasible to wait for a complete result before beginning with the entity resolution. In order to solve this problem, we present a query-time entity resolution approach that takes the asynchronous nature of the replies from data providers into account by starting the entity resolution as soon as first results are returned. Resolved entities are propagated from the entity resolution engine to the mobile client as early as possible. Resolution results that are produced later are send as updates to the client and thus improve earlier results
DocTag2Vec: An Embedding Based Multi-label Learning Approach for Document Tagging
Tagging news articles or blog posts with relevant tags from a collection of
predefined ones is coined as document tagging in this work. Accurate tagging of
articles can benefit several downstream applications such as recommendation and
search. In this work, we propose a novel yet simple approach called DocTag2Vec
to accomplish this task. We substantially extend Word2Vec and Doc2Vec---two
popular models for learning distributed representation of words and documents.
In DocTag2Vec, we simultaneously learn the representation of words, documents,
and tags in a joint vector space during training, and employ the simple
-nearest neighbor search to predict tags for unseen documents. In contrast
to previous multi-label learning methods, DocTag2Vec directly deals with raw
text instead of provided feature vector, and in addition, enjoys advantages
like the learning of tag representation, and the ability of handling newly
created tags. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct
experiments on several datasets and show promising results against
state-of-the-art methods.Comment: 10 page

Enriching videos with light semantics
This paper describes an ongoing prototypical framework to annotate and retrieve web videos with light semantics. The proposed framework reuses many existing vocabularies along with a video model. The knowledge is captured from three different information spaces (media content, context, document). We also describe ways to extract the semantic content descriptions from the existing usergenerated content using multiple approaches of linguistic processing and Named Entity Recognition, which are later identified with DBpedia resources to establish meanings for the tags. Finally, the implemented prototype is described with multiple search interfaces and retrieval processes. Evaluation on semantic enrichment shows a considerable (50% of videos) improvement in content description
Distributed Holistic Clustering on Linked Data
Link discovery is an active field of research to support data integration in
the Web of Data. Due to the huge size and number of available data sources,
efficient and effective link discovery is a very challenging task. Common
pairwise link discovery approaches do not scale to many sources with very large
entity sets. We here propose a distributed holistic approach to link many data
sources based on a clustering of entities that represent the same real-world
object. Our clustering approach provides a compact and fused representation of
entities, and can identify errors in existing links as well as many new links.
We support a distributed execution of the clustering approach to achieve faster
execution times and scalability for large real-world data sets. We provide a
novel gold standard for multi-source clustering, and evaluate our methods with
respect to effectiveness and efficiency for large data sets from the geographic
and music domains
Information Extraction in Illicit Domains
Extracting useful entities and attribute values from illicit domains such as
human trafficking is a challenging problem with the potential for widespread
social impact. Such domains employ atypical language models, have `long tails'
and suffer from the problem of concept drift. In this paper, we propose a
lightweight, feature-agnostic Information Extraction (IE) paradigm specifically
designed for such domains. Our approach uses raw, unlabeled text from an
initial corpus, and a few (12-120) seed annotations per domain-specific
attribute, to learn robust IE models for unobserved pages and websites.
Empirically, we demonstrate that our approach can outperform feature-centric
Conditional Random Field baselines by over 18\% F-Measure on five annotated
sets of real-world human trafficking datasets in both low-supervision and
high-supervision settings. We also show that our approach is demonstrably
robust to concept drift, and can be efficiently bootstrapped even in a serial
computing environment.Comment: 10 pages, ACM WWW 201
Exploiting multimedia in creating and analysing multimedia Web archives
The data contained on the web and the social web are inherently multimedia and consist of a mixture of textual, visual and audio modalities. Community memories embodied on the web and social web contain a rich mixture of data from these modalities. In many ways, the web is the greatest resource ever created by human-kind. However, due to the dynamic and distributed nature of the web, its content changes, appears and disappears on a daily basis. Web archiving provides a way of capturing snapshots of (parts of) the web for preservation and future analysis. This paper provides an overview of techniques we have developed within the context of the EU funded ARCOMEM (ARchiving COmmunity MEMories) project to allow multimedia web content to be leveraged during the archival process and for post-archival analysis. Through a set of use cases, we explore several practical applications of multimedia analytics within the realm of web archiving, web archive analysis and multimedia data on the web in general
