Extensional and Intensional Strategies
This paper is a contribution to the theoretical foundations of strategies. We
first present a general definition of abstract strategies which is extensional
in the sense that a strategy is defined explicitly as a set of derivations of
an abstract reduction system. We then move to a more intensional definition
supporting the abstract view but more operational in the sense that it
describes a means for determining such a set. We characterize the class of
extensional strategies that can be defined intensionally. We also give some
hints towards a logical characterization of intensional strategies and propose
a few challenging perspectives
Johann Lambert's Scientific Tool Kit.: Exemplified by the Measurement of Humidity
International audienceJ.H. Lambert (1728-1777) developed a very detailed theory of science and experiment. Using Lambert's hygrometric studies, this article provides an introduction into Lambert's theory and its practice. Of special interest in Lambert's theory are a well-founded theory on the emergence and definition of concepts and his neat neat eye for heuristics that should ultimately lead up to a mathematization of physical phenomena. His use of visualizations in this context is especially remarkable

The Hetu'u Global Network: Measuring the Distance to the Sun Using the June 5th/6th Transit of Venus
In the spirit of historic astronomical endeavors, we invited school groups
across the globe to collaborate in a solar distance measurement using the rare
June 5/6th transit of Venus. In total, we recruited 19 school groups spread
over 6 continents and 10 countries to participate in our Hetu'u Global Network.
Applying the methods of French astronomer Joseph-Nicolas Delisle, we used
individual second and third Venus-Sun contact times to calculate the distance
to the Sun. Ten of the sites in our network had amiable weather; 8 of which
measured second contact and 5 of which measured third contact leading to
consistent solar distance measurements of 152+/-30 million km and 163+/-30
million km respectively. The distance to the Sun at the time of the transit was
152.25 million km; therefore, our measurements are also consistent within
1sigma of the known value. The goal of our international school group network
was to inspire the next generation of scientists using the excitement and
accessibility of a rare astronomical event. In the process, we connected
hundreds of participating students representing a diverse, multi-cultural group

Some Historical Aspects of Error Calculus by Dirichlet Forms
We discuss the main stages of development of the error calculation since the
beginning of XIX-th century by insisting on what prefigures the use of
Dirichlet forms and emphasizing the mathematical properties that make the use
of Dirichlet forms more relevant and efficient. The purpose of the paper is
mainly to clarify the concepts. We also indicate some possible future research.Comment: 18 page

AbstractHistorians have documented the main development of the calculus of variations in the 18th century. Although we have a clear overall picture of this subject there is in the literature no connected historical account of the more specialized research carried out during the period on problems of extremization under constraint. Concentrating on the work of Leonhard Euler and Joseph Louis Lagrange between 1738 and 1806, the present study attempts to identify and draw together the different threads that make up this story
