    MammoApplet: an interactive Java applet tool for manual annotation in medical imaging

    Web-based applications in computational medicine have become increasingly important during the last years. The rapid growth of the World Wide Web supposes a new paradigm in the telemedicine and eHealth areas in order to assist and enhance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients. Furthermore, training of radiologists and management of medical databases are also becoming increasingly important issues in the field. In this paper, we present MammoApplet , an interactive Java applet interface designed as a web-based tool. It aims to facilitate the diagnosis of new mammographic cases by providing a set of image processing tools that allow a better visualization of the images, and a set of drawing tools, used to annotate the suspicious regions. Each annotation allows including the attributes considered by the experts when issuing the final diagnosis. The overall set of overlays is stored in a database as XML files associated with the original images.     Info Navigator: A visualization tool for document searching and browsing

    In this paper we investigate the retrieval performance of monophonic and polyphonic queries made on a polyphonic music database. We extend the n-gram approach for full-music indexing of monophonic music data to polyphonic music using both rhythm and pitch information. We define an experimental framework for a comparative and fault-tolerance study of various n-gramming strategies and encoding levels. For monophonic queries, we focus in particular on query-by-humming systems, and for polyphonic queries on query-by-example. Error models addressed in several studies are surveyed for the fault-tolerance study. Our experiments show that different n-gramming strategies and encoding precision differ widely in their effectiveness.     Autoplot: A browser for scientific data on the web

    Autoplot is software developed for the Virtual Observatories in Heliophysics to provide intelligent and automated plotting capabilities for many typical data products that are stored in a variety of file formats or databases. Autoplot has proven to be a flexible tool for exploring, accessing, and viewing data resources as typically found on the web, usually in the form of a directory containing data files with multiple parameters contained in each file. Data from a data source is abstracted into a common internal data model called QDataSet. Autoplot is built from individually useful components, and can be extended and reused to create specialized data handling and analysis applications and is being used in a variety of science visualization and analysis applications. Although originally developed for viewing heliophysics-related time series and spectrograms, its flexible and generic data representation model makes it potentially useful for the Earth sciences.Comment: 16 page

    A Two-Phase Dynamic Programming Algorithm Tool for DNA Sequences

    Sequence alignment has to do with the arrangement of DNA, RNA, and protein sequences to identify areas of similarity. Technic ally, it involves the arrangement of the primary sequences of DNA, RNA, or protein to identify regions of similarity that may be a consequence of functional, structural, or evolutionary relationships between the sequences. Similarity may be a consequence of functional, s tructural, or evolutionary relationships between the sequences. If two sequences in an alignment share a common ancestor, mismatches can be interpreted as mutations, and gaps as insertions. Such information becomes of great use in vital areas such as the study of d iseases, genomics and generally in the biological sciences. Thus, sequence alignment presents not just an exciting field of study, but a field of great importance to mankind. In this light, we extensively studied about seventy (70) existing sequence alignment tools available to us. Most of these tools are not user friendly and cannot be used by biologists. The few tools that attempted both Local and Global algorithms are not ready available freely. We therefore implemented a sequence alignment tool (CU-Aligner) in an understandable, user-friendly and portable way, with click-of-a-button simplicity. This is done utilizing the Needleman-Wunsh and Smith-Waterman algorithms for global and local alignments, respectively which focuses primarily on DNA sequences. Our aligner is implemented in the Java language in both application and applet mode and has been efficient on all windows operating systems

    On the Use of XML in Medical Imaging Web-Based Applications

    The rapid growth of digital technology in medical fields over recent years has increased the need for applications able to manage patient medical records, imaging data, and chart information. Web-based applications are implemented with the purpose to link digital databases, storage and transmission protocols, management of large volumes of data and security concepts, allowing the possibility to read, analyze, and even diagnose remotely from the medical center where the information was acquired. The objective of this paper is to analyze the use of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) language in web-based applications that aid in diagnosis or treatment of patients, considering how this protocol allows indexing and exchanging the huge amount of information associated with each medical case.
