Reconfigurable Security: Edge Computing-based Framework for IoT
In various scenarios, achieving security between IoT devices is challenging
since the devices may have different dedicated communication standards,
resource constraints as well as various applications. In this article, we first
provide requirements and existing solutions for IoT security. We then introduce
a new reconfigurable security framework based on edge computing, which utilizes
a near-user edge device, i.e., security agent, to simplify key management and
offload the computational costs of security algorithms at IoT devices. This
framework is designed to overcome the challenges including high computation
costs, low flexibility in key management, and low compatibility in deploying
new security algorithms in IoT, especially when adopting advanced cryptographic
primitives. We also provide the design principles of the reconfigurable
security framework, the exemplary security protocols for anonymous
authentication and secure data access control, and the performance analysis in
terms of feasibility and usability. The reconfigurable security framework paves
a new way to strength IoT security by edge computing.Comment: under submission to possible journal publication
Secure and privacy-aware proxy mobile IPv6 protocol for vehicle-to-grid networks
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) networks have emerged as a new communication paradigm between Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the Smart Grid (SG). In order to ensure seamless communications between mobile EVs and the electric vehicle supply equipment, the support of ubiquitous and transparent mobile IP communications is essential in V2G networks. However, enabling mobile IP communications raises real concerns about the possibility of tracking the locations of connected EVs through their mobile IP addresses. In this paper, we employ certificate-less public key cryptography in synergy with the restrictive partially blind signature technique to construct a secure and privacy-aware proxy mobile IPv6 (SP-PMIPv6) protocol for V2G networks. SP-PMIPv6 achieves low authentication latency while protecting the identity and location privacy of the mobile EV. We evaluate the SP-PMIPv6 protocol in terms of its authentication overhead and the information-theoretic uncertainty derived by the mutual information metric to show the high level of achieved anonymity
A Multi-User, Single-Authentication Protocol for Smart Grid Architectures
open access articleIn a smart grid system, the utility server collects data from various smart grid devices. These data play an important role in the energy distribution and balancing between the energy providers and energy consumers. However, these data are prone to tampering attacks by an attacker, while traversing from the smart grid devices to the utility servers, which may result in energy disruption or imbalance. Thus, an authentication is mandatory to efficiently authenticate the devices and the utility servers and avoid tampering attacks. To this end, a group authentication algorithm is proposed for preserving demand–response security in a smart grid. The proposed mechanism also provides a fine-grained access control feature where the utility server can only
access a limited number of smart grid devices. The initial authentication between the utility server and smart grid device in a group involves a single public key operation, while the subsequent authentications with the same device or other devices in the same group do not need a public key operation. This reduces the overall computation and communication overheads and takes less time to successfully establish a secret session key, which is used to exchange sensitive information over an unsecured wireless channel. The resilience of the proposed algorithm is tested against various attacks using formal and informal security analysis
Towards a Secure Smart Grid Storage Communications Gateway
This research in progress paper describes the role of cyber security measures
undertaken in an ICT system for integrating electric storage technologies into
the grid. To do so, it defines security requirements for a communications
gateway and gives detailed information and hands-on configuration advice on
node and communication line security, data storage, coping with backend M2M
communications protocols and examines privacy issues. The presented research
paves the road for developing secure smart energy communications devices that
allow enhancing energy efficiency. The described measures are implemented in an
actual gateway device within the HORIZON 2020 project STORY, which aims at
developing new ways to use storage and demonstrating these on six different
demonstration sites.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
