Privacy-Preserving Facial Recognition Using Biometric-Capsules
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)In recent years, developers have used the proliferation of biometric sensors in smart devices, along with recent advances in deep learning, to implement an array of biometrics-based recognition systems. Though these systems demonstrate remarkable performance and have seen wide acceptance, they present unique and pressing security and privacy concerns. One proposed method which addresses these concerns is the elegant, fusion-based Biometric-Capsule (BC) scheme. The BC scheme is provably secure, privacy-preserving, cancellable and interoperable in its secure feature fusion design.
In this work, we demonstrate that the BC scheme is uniquely fit to secure state-of-the-art facial verification, authentication and identification systems. We compare the performance of unsecured, underlying biometrics systems to the performance of the BC-embedded systems in order to directly demonstrate the minimal effects of the privacy-preserving BC scheme on underlying system performance. Notably, we demonstrate that, when seamlessly embedded into a state-of-the-art FaceNet and ArcFace verification systems which achieve accuracies of 97.18% and 99.75% on the benchmark LFW dataset, the BC-embedded systems are able to achieve accuracies of 95.13% and 99.13% respectively. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that the BC scheme outperforms or performs as well as several other proposed secure biometric methods
Alexandria: Extensible Framework for Rapid Exploration of Social Media
The Alexandria system under development at IBM Research provides an
extensible framework and platform for supporting a variety of big-data
analytics and visualizations. The system is currently focused on enabling rapid
exploration of text-based social media data. The system provides tools to help
with constructing "domain models" (i.e., families of keywords and extractors to
enable focus on tweets and other social media documents relevant to a project),
to rapidly extract and segment the relevant social media and its authors, to
apply further analytics (such as finding trends and anomalous terms), and
visualizing the results. The system architecture is centered around a variety
of REST-based service APIs to enable flexible orchestration of the system
capabilities; these are especially useful to support knowledge-worker driven
iterative exploration of social phenomena. The architecture also enables rapid
integration of Alexandria capabilities with other social media analytics
system, as has been demonstrated through an integration with IBM Research's
SystemG. This paper describes a prototypical usage scenario for Alexandria,

Social networking sites are important platforms for visual self-presentation online. This article investigates how content producers present their gender identities on the social networking site, Instagram. We draw upon and develop Goffman’s analytic framework to understand the self-presentation techniques and styles users employ online. Conducting a visual content analysis of clean eating–related top posts, we examine how users deploy clean eating hashtags and how the architecture of Instagram constrains and enables certain identities around shared lifestyles and commercial interests. Our findings reveal the symbolic significance of hashtags for group membership and the degree to which gender identities on Instagram are configured around platform interfaces
