Survey of traffic control schemes and error control schemes for ATM networks
Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. This paper surveys and reviews a number of topics related to ATM networks. Those topics cover congestion control, provision of multiple classes of traffic, and error control. Due to the nature of ATM networks, those issues are far more challenging than in conventional networks. Sorne of the more promising solutions to those issues are surveyed, and the corresponding results on performance are summarized. Future research problems in ATM protocol aspect are also presented
Architectures and protocols for sub-wavelength optical networks: contributions to connectionless and connection-oriented data transport
The rapid evolving Internet and the broad range of new data applications (e.g., multimedia, video-conference, online gaming, etc.)
is fostering revolutionary changes in the way we communicate. In addition, some of these applications demand for unprecedented
amounts of bandwidth resources with diverse quality of service (QoS).
The development of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in the 90's made very cost-effective the availability of bandwidth.
Nowadays, optical circuit switching technologies are predominant in the core enabling the set up of lightpaths across the network.
However, full-wavelength lightpath granularity is too coarse, which results to be inefficient for provisioning sub-wavelength
channels. As remarked by the research community, an open issue in optical networking is increasing the protocol transparency as
well as provisioning true dynamic bandwidth allocation at the network level. To this end, new architectures are required. Optical
burst/packet switching (OBS/OPS) are two such proposed technologies under investigation.
This thesis contributes with three network architectures which aim at improving the sub-wavelength data transport from different
perspectives. First, we gain insight into the connectionless nature of OBS. Here, the network dynamics are increased due to the
short-lived burst transmissions. Moreover, burst contentions degrade the performance even at very low loads. To cope with them,
we propose a proactive resolution scheme by means of a distributed auto load-balancing routing and wavelength assignment
(RWA) algorithm for wavelength-continuity constraint networks. In this protocol, the RWA and burst forwarding is based on the
exploitation and exploration of switching rule concentration values that incorporate contention and forwarding desirability
information. To support such architecture, forward and backward control packets are used in the burst forwarding and updating
rules, respectively. In order to analyze the benefits of the new algorithm, four different network topologies are used. Results
indicate that the proposed method outperforms the rest of tested RWA algorithms at various margins depending on the topology
without penalizing other parameters such as end-to-end delay.
The second contribution proposes a hybrid connectionless and connection-oriented architecture based on a medium access control
(MAC) protocol for OBS networks (DAOBS). The MAC provides two main access mechanisms: queue arbitrated (QA) for
connectionless bursts and pre-arbitrated (PA) for TDM connection-oriented services. Such an architecture allows for a broad range
of delay-sensitive applications or guaranteed services. Results evaluated through simulations show that in the QA access mode
highest priority bursts are guaranteed zero losses and very low access latencies. Regarding the PA mode, we report that doubling
the offered TDM traffic load increases in more than one order their connection blocking, slightly affecting the blocking of other
connectionless bursts. In this chapter, we also tackle two of the issues related with the DAOBS architecture and its operation.
Firstly, we model mathematically the lower and upper approximations of the access delay as a consequence of the connectionless
queue arbitrated access. Secondly, we formulate the generation of the virtual light-tree overlay topology for the static traffic case.Postprint (published version

Performance analysis of error recovery and congestion control in high-speed networks
In the past few years, Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) has received increasing attention as a communication architecture capable of supporting multimedia applications. Among the techniques proposed to implement B-ISDN, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its efficiency and flexibility. In ATM networks, the performance bottleneck of the network, which was once the channel transmission speed, is shifted to the processing speed at the network switching nodes and the propagation delay of the channel. This shift is because the high-speed channel increases the ratio of processing time to packet transmission time and also the ratio of propagation delay to packet transmission time. The increased processing overhead makes it difficult to implement hop-by-hop schemes, which may impose prohibitably high processing at each switching node. The increased propagation delay overhead makes traffic control in ATM a challenge since a large number of packets can be in transit between two ATM switching nodes. Because of these fundamental changes, control schemes developed for traditional networks may not perform efficiently, and thus, new network architectures (congestion control schemes, error control schemes, etc.) are required in ATM networks. In this dissertation, we first present an extensive survey of various traffic control schemes and network protocols for ATM networks. In this survey, possible traffic control schemes are examined, and problems of those schemes and their possible solutions are presented. Next, we investigate two key research issues in ATM networks (and other types of high-speed networks): the effects of protocol-processing overhead and the efficiency of traffic control schemes. We first investigate the effects of protocol-processing overhead on the performance of error recovery schemes. Specifically, we investigate the performance trade-offs between link-by-link and edge-to-edge error recovery schemes. Our results show that for a network with high-speed/low-error-rate channels, an edge-to-edge scheme gives a smaller delay than a link-by-link scheme. We then investigate the effectiveness of a priority packet discarding scheme, a congestion control mechanism suitable for high-speed networks. We derive loss probabilities for each stream and investigate the impact of burstiness of traffic streams on the performance of individual streams
Burst switched optical networks supporting legacy and future service types
Focusing on the principles and the paradigm of OBS an overview addressing expectable performance and application issues is presented. Proposals on OBS were published over a decade and the presented techniques spread into many directions. The paper comprises discussions of several challenges that OBS meets, in order to compile the big picture. The OBS principle is presented unrestricted to individual proposals and trends. Merits are openly discussed, considering basic teletraffic theory and common traffic characterisation. A more generic OBS paradigm than usual is impartially discussed and found capable to overcome shortcomings of recent proposals. In conclusion, an OBS that offers different connection types may support most client demands within a sole optical network layer
Reconfiguration in an Optical Multiring Interconnection Network - Masters Thesis, December 2002
The advent of optical technology that can feasibly support extremely high bandwidth chip-to-chip communication raises a host of architectural questions in the design of digital systems. Terabit per second (and higher) bandwidths have not been previously available at the chip level. In this thesis, we examine the use of this technology in two different scenarios, viz., as the interconnection network in a multiprocessor system and as a switch fabric in network routers. Specifically, we examine the performance gains associated with utilizing the bandwidth reconfiguration capabilities of a system based on this technology

Traffic and performance evaluation for optical networks. An Investigation into Modelling and Characterisation of Traffic Flows and Performance Analysis and Engineering for Optical Network Architectures.
The convergence of multiservice heterogeneous networks and ever increasing Internet applications, like peer to peer networking and the increased number of users and services, demand a more efficient bandwidth allocation in optical networks. In this context, new architectures and protocols are needed in conjuction with cost effective quantitative methodologies in order to provide an insight into the performance aspects of the next and future generation Internets.
This thesis reports an investigation, based on efficient simulation methodologies, in order to assess existing high performance algorithms and to propose new ones. The analysis of the traffic characteristics of an OC-192 link (9953.28 Mbps) is initially conducted, a requirement due to the discovery of self-similar long-range dependent properties in network traffic, and the suitability of the GE distribution for modelling interarrival times of bursty traffic in short time scales is presented. Consequently, using a heuristic approach, the self-similar properties of the GE/G/¿ are being presented, providing a method to generate self-similar traffic that takes into consideration burstiness in small time scales. A description of the state of the art in optical networking providing a deeper insight into the current technologies, protocols and architectures in the field, which creates the motivation for more research into the promising switching technique of ¿Optical Burst Switching¿ (OBS). An investigation into the performance impact of various burst assembly strategies on an OBS edge node¿s mean buffer length is conducted. Realistic traffic characteristics are considered based on the analysis of the OC-192 backbone traffic traces. In addition the effect of burstiness in the small time scales on mean assembly time and burst size distribution is investigated. A new Dynamic OBS Offset Allocation Protocol is devised and favourable comparisons are carried out between the proposed OBS protocol and the Just Enough Time (JET) protocol, in terms of mean queue length, blocking and throughput. Finally the research focuses on simulation methodologies employed throughout the thesis using the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) on a commercial NVidia GeForce 8800 GTX, which was initially designed for gaming computers. Parallel generators of Optical Bursts are implemented and simulated in ¿Compute Unified Device Architecture¿ (CUDA) and compared with simulations run on general-purpose CPU proving the GPU to be a cost-effective platform which can significantly speed-up calculations in order to make simulations of more complex and demanding networks easier to develop

Analytic modelling and resource dimensioning of optical burst switched networks
The realisation of optical network architectures may hold the key to delivering the enormous bandwidth demands of next generation Internet applications and services. Optical
Burst Switching (OBS) is a potentially cost-effective switching technique that can satisfy these demands by offering a high bit rate transport service that is bandwidth-efficient under dynamic Internet traffic loads. Although various aspects of OBS performance have been extensively investigated, there remains a need to systematically assess the cost/performance trade-offs involved in dimensioning OBS switch resources in a network. This goal is essential in enabling the future deployment of OBS but poses a significant challenge due to the complexity of obtaining tractable mathematical models applicable to OBS network optimisation. The overall aim of this thesis lies within this challenge.
This thesis firstly develops a novel analytic performance model of an OBS node where burst contention is resolved by combined use of Tuneable Wavelength Converters (TWCs)
and Fibre Delay Lines (FDLs) connected in an efficient share-per-node configuration. The model uses a two-moment traffic representation that gives a good trade-off between accuracy and complexity, and is suitable for extension to use in network modelling.
The OBS node model is then used to derive an approximate analytic model of an OBS network of switches equipped with TWCs and FDLs, again maintaining a two-moment traffic model for each end-to-end traffic path in the network. This allows evaluation of link/route loss rates under different offered traffic characteristics, whereas most OBS network
models assume only a single-moment traffic representation.
In the last part of this thesis, resource dimensioning of OBS networks is performed by solving single and multi-objective optimisation problems based on the analytic network model. The optimisation objectives relate to equipment cost minimisation and throughput maximisation under end-to-end loss rate constraints. Due to non-convexity of the network performance constraint equations, a search heuristic approach has been taken using a constraint-handling genetic algorithm
Simulation and analytical performance studies of generic atm switch fabrics.
As technology improves exciting new services such as video phone become possible and economically viable but their deployment is hampered by the inability of the present networks to carry them. The long term vision is to have a single network able to carry all present and future services. Asynchronous Transfer Mode, ATM, is the versatile new packet -based switching and multiplexing technique proposed for the single network. Interest in ATM is currently high as both industrial and academic institutions strive to understand more about the technique. Using both simulation and analysis, this research has investigated how the performance of ATM switches is affected by architectural variations in the switch fabric design and how the stochastic nature of ATM affects the timing of constant bit rate services. As a result the research has contributed new ATM switch performance data, a general purpose ATM switch simulator and analytic models that further research may utilise and has uncovered a significant timing problem of the ATM technique.
The thesis will also be of interest and assistance to anyone planning on using simulation as a research tool to model an ATM switch
Performance analysis of optical burst switching network
In this dissertation, after reviewing the new paradigm in the optical switching network invoked by the DWDM technology and studying the changes of the schemes, we design the new optical burst switching networks, analyze the performance of the proposed scheme and interpret the analysis results. For design point of view, the fairness guaranteeing scheme and burst blocking reduction schemes in the mesh networks, loss less burst transmission scheme in DWDM metro ring networks are considered. As a future broad band optical alternative, optical burst switching has been receive much focus. We review the property of the optical switching technologies such as optical packet switching, optical circuit switching, and optical burst switching. The benefits of the optical burst switching is illustrated. Even though optical burst switching has several advantage, it has intrinsic technology barrier. We study the research activities to remove the basic problem of optical burst switching. Optical deflection, optical burst segmentation, burst cloning, and burst piggy backing scheme is considered. To improve the network performance, we design optical burst switching network in mesh networks and metro ring networks. We also implement the proposed network by our own developed network test bench. We verify the proposed network performance by analyzing the network mathematically in terms of blocking rate, delay and throughput. The theoretical results are compared with the simulation results. The verification shows that our proposed schemes outperform those of the conventional scheme. Our mathematical models are also matched to the simulation results. The interpretation of the verification shows that our assumption and theoretical analysis is well designed. The results illustrate that the difference between the simulation results and mathematical results is within the considerable margin. The contribution of the thesis is that the performance improvement schemes in both of the mesh network and ring network are proposed and analyzed. By considering feasibility of the future optical networks, proposed scheme in this thesis is more deployable in commercial network in terms of the burst blocking rate and delay as well as the network stability
