Pop Music Highlighter: Marking the Emotion Keypoints
The goal of music highlight extraction is to get a short consecutive segment
of a piece of music that provides an effective representation of the whole
piece. In a previous work, we introduced an attention-based convolutional
recurrent neural network that uses music emotion classification as a surrogate
task for music highlight extraction, for Pop songs. The rationale behind that
approach is that the highlight of a song is usually the most emotional part.
This paper extends our previous work in the following two aspects. First,
methodology-wise we experiment with a new architecture that does not need any
recurrent layers, making the training process faster. Moreover, we compare a
late-fusion variant and an early-fusion variant to study which one better
exploits the attention mechanism. Second, we conduct and report an extensive
set of experiments comparing the proposed attention-based methods against a
heuristic energy-based method, a structural repetition-based method, and a few
other simple feature-based methods for this task. Due to the lack of
public-domain labeled data for highlight extraction, following our previous
work we use the RWC POP 100-song data set to evaluate how the detected
highlights overlap with any chorus sections of the songs. The experiments
demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods over competing methods. For

Songs of War: Anglo-Canadian Popular Songs on the Home Front, 1914-1918
This article explores the production, content, and reception of Anglo-Canadian popular songs composed during the First World War. It argues that popular songs reflected the changing attitudes of Anglo-Canadians, as composers and publishers created music to fulfill different purposes for those on the home front at various stages of the war. In the beginning, the majority of songs were patriotic marches composed to gather support for Britain and the Empire. As the war continued, there was an increase in the number of patriotic songs that expressed a growing sense of wartime Canadian nationalism to enlist recruits. Throughout the war, music was significant to the First World War experience on Canadaâs home front

If I Ruled the World: Putting Hip Hop on the Atlas
âIf I Ruled the World: Putting Hip Hop on the Atlasâ contends for a third wave of Global Hip Hop Studies that builds on the work of the first two waves, identifies Hip Hop as an African diasporic phenomenon, and aligns with Hip Hop where there are no boundaries between Hip Hop inside and outside of the United States. Joanna Daguirane Da Sylva adds to the cipha with her examination of Didier Awadi. Da Sylva\u27s excellent work reveals the ways in which Hip Hoppa Didier Awadi elevates Pan-Africanism and uses Hip Hop as a tool to decolonize the minds of African peoples. The interview by Tasha Iglesias and myself of members of Generation Hip Hop and the Universal Hip Hop Museum provides a primary source and highlights two Hip Hop organizations with chapters around the world. Mich Yonah Nyawaloâs Negotiating French Muslim Identities through Hip Hop details Hip Hop artists MĂ©dine and Diamâs, who are both French and Muslim, and whose self-identification can be understood as political strategies in response to the French Republicâs marginalization of Muslims. In âConfigurations of Space and Identity in Hip Hop: Performing âGlobal Southâ,â Igor Johannsen adds to this special issue an examination of the spatiality of the Global South and how Hip Hoppas in the Global South oppose global hegemony. The final essay, ââI Got the Mics On, My People Speakâ: On the Rise of Aboriginal Australian Hip Hop,â by Benjamin Kelly and Rhyan Clapham, provides a thorough analysis of Aboriginal Hip Hop and situates it within postcolonialism. Overall, the collection of these essays points to the multiple identities, political economies, cultures, and scholarly fields and disciplines that Hip Hop interacts with around the world
The Skipping Behavior of Users of Music Streaming Services and its Relation to Musical Structure
The behavior of users of music streaming services is investigated from the
point of view of the temporal dimension of individual songs; specifically, the
main object of the analysis is the point in time within a song at which users
stop listening and start streaming another song ("skip"). The main contribution
of this study is the ascertainment of a correlation between the distribution in
time of skipping events and the musical structure of songs. It is also shown
that such distribution is not only specific to the individual songs, but also
independent of the cohort of users and, under stationary conditions, date of
observation. Finally, user behavioral data is used to train a predictor of the
musical structure of a song solely from its acoustic content; it is shown that
the use of such data, available in large quantities to music streaming
services, yields significant improvements in accuracy over the customary
fashion of training this class of algorithms, in which only smaller amounts of
hand-labeled data are available
