WiLiTV: A Low-Cost Wireless Framework for Live TV Services
With the evolution of HDTV and Ultra HDTV, the bandwidth requirement for
IP-based TV content is rapidly increasing. Consumers demand uninterrupted
service with a high Quality of Experience (QoE). Service providers are
constantly trying to differentiate themselves by innovating new ways of
distributing content more efficiently with lower cost and higher penetration.
In this work, we propose a cost-efficient wireless framework (WiLiTV) for
delivering live TV services, consisting of a mix of wireless access
technologies (e.g. Satellite, WiFi and LTE overlay links). In the proposed
architecture, live TV content is injected into the network at a few residential
locations using satellite dishes. The content is then further distributed to
other homes using a house-to-house WiFi network or via an overlay LTE network.
Our problem is to construct an optimal TV distribution network with the minimum
number of satellite injection points, while preserving the highest QoE, for
different neighborhood densities. We evaluate the framework using realistic
time-varying demand patterns and a diverse set of home location data. Our study
demonstrates that the architecture requires 75 - 90% fewer satellite injection
points, compared to traditional architectures. Furthermore, we show that most
cost savings can be obtained using simple and practical relay routing
solutions
Energy-Efficient Flow Scheduling and Routing with Hard Deadlines in Data Center Networks
The power consumption of enormous network devices in data centers has emerged
as a big concern to data center operators. Despite many
traffic-engineering-based solutions, very little attention has been paid on
performance-guaranteed energy saving schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel
energy-saving model for data center networks by scheduling and routing
"deadline-constrained flows" where the transmission of every flow has to be
accomplished before a rigorous deadline, being the most critical requirement in
production data center networks. Based on speed scaling and power-down energy
saving strategies for network devices, we aim to explore the most energy
efficient way of scheduling and routing flows on the network, as well as
determining the transmission speed for every flow. We consider two general
versions of the problem. For the version of only flow scheduling where routes
of flows are pre-given, we show that it can be solved polynomially and we
develop an optimal combinatorial algorithm for it. For the version of joint
flow scheduling and routing, we prove that it is strongly NP-hard and cannot
have a Fully Polynomial-Time Approximation Scheme (FPTAS) unless P=NP. Based on
a relaxation and randomized rounding technique, we provide an efficient
approximation algorithm which can guarantee a provable performance ratio with
respect to a polynomial of the total number of flows.Comment: 11 pages, accepted by ICDCS'1
Fast network configuration in Software Defined Networking
Software Defined Networking (SDN) provides a framework to dynamically adjust and re-program the data plane with the use of flow rules. The realization of highly adaptive SDNs with the ability to respond to changing demands or recover after a network failure in a short period of time, hinges on efficient updates of flow rules. We model the time to deploy a set of flow rules by the update time at the bottleneck switch, and formulate the problem of selecting paths to minimize the deployment time under feasibility constraints as a mixed integer linear program (MILP). To reduce the computation time of determining flow rules, we propose efficient heuristics designed to approximate the minimum-deployment-time solution by relaxing the MILP or selecting the paths sequentially. Through extensive simulations we show that our algorithms outperform current, shortest path based solutions by reducing the total network configuration time up to 55% while having similar packet loss, in the considered scenarios. We also demonstrate that in a networked environment with a certain fraction of failed links, our algorithms are able to reduce the average time to reestablish disrupted flows by 40%
Analysis of the Min-Sum Algorithm for Packing and Covering Problems via Linear Programming
Message-passing algorithms based on belief-propagation (BP) are successfully
used in many applications including decoding error correcting codes and solving
constraint satisfaction and inference problems. BP-based algorithms operate
over graph representations, called factor graphs, that are used to model the
input. Although in many cases BP-based algorithms exhibit impressive empirical
results, not much has been proved when the factor graphs have cycles.
This work deals with packing and covering integer programs in which the
constraint matrix is zero-one, the constraint vector is integral, and the
variables are subject to box constraints. We study the performance of the
min-sum algorithm when applied to the corresponding factor graph models of
packing and covering LPs.
We compare the solutions computed by the min-sum algorithm for packing and
covering problems to the optimal solutions of the corresponding linear
programming (LP) relaxations. In particular, we prove that if the LP has an
optimal fractional solution, then for each fractional component, the min-sum
algorithm either computes multiple solutions or the solution oscillates below
and above the fraction. This implies that the min-sum algorithm computes the
optimal integral solution only if the LP has a unique optimal solution that is
integral.
The converse is not true in general. For a special case of packing and
covering problems, we prove that if the LP has a unique optimal solution that
is integral and on the boundary of the box constraints, then the min-sum
algorithm computes the optimal solution in pseudo-polynomial time.
Our results unify and extend recent results for the maximum weight matching
problem by [Sanghavi et al.,'2011] and [Bayati et al., 2011] and for the
maximum weight independent set problem [Sanghavi et al.'2009]
