    Text categorization and similarity analysis: similarity measure, literature review

    Document classification and provenance has become an important area of computer science as the amount of digital information is growing significantly. Organisations are storing documents on computers rather than in paper form. Software is now required that will show the similarities between documents (i.e. document classification) and to point out duplicates and possibly the history of each document (i.e. provenance). Poor organisation is common and leads to situations like above. There exists a number of software solutions in this area designed to make document organisation as simple as possible. I'm doing my project with Pingar who are a company based in Auckland who aim to help organise the growing amount of unstructured digital data. This reports analyses the existing literature in this area with the aim to determine what already exists and how my project will be different from existing solutions

    Augmented trading:From news articles to stock price predictions using semantics

    This thesis tries to answer the question how to predict the reaction of the stock market to news articles using the latest suitable developments in Natural Language Processing. This is done using text classiffication where a new article is matched to a category of articles which have a certain influence on the stock price. The thesis first discusses why analysis of news articles is a feasible approach to predicting the stock market and why analysis of past prices should not be build upon. From related work in this domain two main design choices are extracted; what to take as features for news articles and how to couple them with the changes in stock price. This thesis then suggests which different features are possible to extract from articles resulting in a template for features which can deal with negation, favorability, abstracts from companies and uses domain knowledge and synonyms for generalization. To couple the features to changes in stock price a survey is given of several text classiffication techniques from which it is concluded that Support Vector Machines are very suitable for the domain of stock prices and extensive features. The system has been tested with a unique data set of news articles for which results are reported that are signifficantly better than random. The results improve even more when only headlines of news articles are taken into account. Because the system is only tested with closing prices it cannot concluded that it will work in practice but this can be easily tested if stock prices during the days are available. The main suggestions for feature work are to test the system with this data and to improve the filling of the template so it can also be used in other areas of favorability analysis or maybe even to extract interesting information out of texts

    Complex Systems Science: Dreams of Universality, Reality of Interdisciplinarity

    Using a large database (~ 215 000 records) of relevant articles, we empirically study the "complex systems" field and its claims to find universal principles applying to systems in general. The study of references shared by the papers allows us to obtain a global point of view on the structure of this highly interdisciplinary field. We show that its overall coherence does not arise from a universal theory but instead from computational techniques and fruitful adaptations of the idea of self-organization to specific systems. We also find that communication between different disciplines goes through specific "trading zones", ie sub-communities that create an interface around specific tools (a DNA microchip) or concepts (a network).Comment: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (2012) 10.1002/asi.2264

    Multitask learning without label correspondences

    We propose an algorithm to perform multitask learning where each task has potentially distinct label sets and label correspondences are not readily available. This is in contrast with existing methods which either assume that the label sets shared by different tasks are the same or that there exists a label mapping oracle. Our method directly maximizes the mutual information among the labels, and we show that the resulting objective function can be efficiently optimized using existing algorithms. Our proposed approach has a direct application for data integration with different label spaces for the purpose of classification, such as integrating Yahoo! and DMOZ web directories

    Development of a text mining approach to disease network discovery

    Scientific literature is one of the major sources of knowledge for systems biology, in the form of papers, patents and other types of written reports. Text mining methods aim at automatically extracting relevant information from the literature. The hypothesis of this thesis was that biological systems could be elucidated by the development of text mining solutions that can automatically extract relevant information from documents. The first objective consisted in developing software components to recognize biomedical entities in text, which is the first step to generate a network about a biological system. To this end, a machine learning solution was developed, which can be trained for specific biological entities using an annotated dataset, obtaining high-quality results. Additionally, a rule-based solution was developed, which can be easily adapted to various types of entities. The second objective consisted in developing an automatic approach to link the recognized entities to a reference knowledge base. A solution based on the PageRank algorithm was developed in order to match the entities to the concepts that most contribute to the overall coherence. The third objective consisted in automatically extracting relations between entities, to generate knowledge graphs about biological systems. Due to the lack of annotated datasets available for this task, distant supervision was employed to train a relation classifier on a corpus of documents and a knowledge base. The applicability of this approach was demonstrated in two case studies: microRNAgene relations for cystic fibrosis, obtaining a network of 27 relations using the abstracts of 51 recently published papers; and cell-cytokine relations for tolerogenic cell therapies, obtaining a network of 647 relations from 3264 abstracts. Through a manual evaluation, the information contained in these networks was determined to be relevant. Additionally, a solution combining deep learning techniques with ontology information was developed, to take advantage of the domain knowledge provided by ontologies. This thesis contributed with several solutions that demonstrate the usefulness of text mining methods to systems biology by extracting domain-specific information from the literature. These solutions make it easier to integrate various areas of research, leading to a better understanding of biological systems

    A pilot study in an application of text mining to learning system evaluation

    Text mining concerns discovering and extracting knowledge from unstructured data. It transforms textual data into a usable, intelligible format that facilitates classifying documents, finding explicit relationships or associations between documents, and clustering documents into categories. Given a collection of survey comments evaluating the civil engineering learning system, text mining technique is applied to discover and extract knowledge from the comments. This research focuses on the study of a systematic way to apply a software tool, SAS Enterprise Miner, to the survey data. The purpose is to categorize the comments into different groups in an attempt to identify major concerns from the users or students. Each group will be associated with a set of key terms. This is able to assist the evaluators of the learning system to obtain the ideas from those summarized terms without the need of going through a potentially huge amount of data --Abstract, page iii
