    GraphMaps: Browsing Large Graphs as Interactive Maps

    Algorithms for laying out large graphs have seen significant progress in the past decade. However, browsing large graphs remains a challenge. Rendering thousands of graphical elements at once often results in a cluttered image, and navigating these elements naively can cause disorientation. To address this challenge we propose a method called GraphMaps, mimicking the browsing experience of online geographic maps. GraphMaps creates a sequence of layers, where each layer refines the previous one. During graph browsing, GraphMaps chooses the layer corresponding to the zoom level, and renders only those entities of the layer that intersect the current viewport. The result is that, regardless of the graph size, the number of entities rendered at each view does not exceed a predefined threshold, yet all graph elements can be explored by the standard zoom and pan operations. GraphMaps preprocesses a graph in such a way that during browsing, the geometry of the entities is stable, and the viewer is responsive. Our case studies indicate that GraphMaps is useful in gaining an overview of a large graph, and also in exploring a graph on a finer level of detail.Comment: submitted to GD 201

    Measuring concept similarities in multimedia ontologies: analysis and evaluations

    The recent development of large-scale multimedia concept ontologies has provided a new momentum for research in the semantic analysis of multimedia repositories. Different methods for generic concept detection have been extensively studied, but the question of how to exploit the structure of a multimedia ontology and existing inter-concept relations has not received similar attention. In this paper, we present a clustering-based method for modeling semantic concepts on low-level feature spaces and study the evaluation of the quality of such models with entropy-based methods. We cover a variety of methods for assessing the similarity of different concepts in a multimedia ontology. We study three ontologies and apply the proposed techniques in experiments involving the visual and semantic similarities, manual annotation of video, and concept detection. The results show that modeling inter-concept relations can provide a promising resource for many different application areas in semantic multimedia processing

    Contours in Visualization

    This thesis studies the visualization of set collections either via or defines as the relations among contours. In the first part, dynamic Euler diagrams are used to communicate and improve semimanually the result of clustering methods which allow clusters to overlap arbitrarily. The contours of the Euler diagram are rendered as implicit surfaces called blobs in computer graphics. The interaction metaphor is the moving of items into or out of these blobs. The utility of the method is demonstrated on data arising from the analysis of gene expressions. The method works well for small datasets of up to one hundred items and few clusters. In the second part, these limitations are mitigated employing a GPU-based rendering of Euler diagrams and mixing textures and colors to resolve overlapping regions better. The GPU-based approach subdivides the screen into triangles on which it performs a contour interpolation, i.e. a fragment shader determines for each pixel which zones of an Euler diagram it belongs to. The rendering speed is thus increased to allow multiple hundred items. The method is applied to an example comparing different document clustering results. The contour tree compactly describes scalar field topology. From the viewpoint of graph drawing, it is a tree with attributes at vertices and optionally on edges. Standard tree drawing algorithms emphasize structural properties of the tree and neglect the attributes. Adapting popular graph drawing approaches to the problem of contour tree drawing it is found that they are unable to convey this information. Five aesthetic criteria for drawing contour trees are proposed and a novel algorithm for drawing contour trees in the plane that satisfies four of these criteria is presented. The implementation is fast and effective for contour tree sizes usually used in interactive systems and also produces readable pictures for larger trees. Dynamical models that explain the formation of spatial structures of RNA molecules have reached a complexity that requires novel visualization methods to analyze these model\''s validity. The fourth part of the thesis focuses on the visualization of so-called folding landscapes of a growing RNA molecule. Folding landscapes describe the energy of a molecule as a function of its spatial configuration; they are huge and high dimensional. Their most salient features are described by their so-called barrier tree -- a contour tree for discrete observation spaces. The changing folding landscapes of a growing RNA chain are visualized as an animation of the corresponding barrier tree sequence. The animation is created as an adaption of the foresight layout with tolerance algorithm for dynamic graph layout. The adaptation requires changes to the concept of supergraph and it layout. The thesis finishes with some thoughts on how these approaches can be combined and how the task the application should support can help inform the choice of visualization modality

    Image Processing for Multiple-Target Tracking on a Graphics Processing Unit

    Multiple-target tracking (MTT) systems have been implemented on many different platforms, however these solutions are often expensive and have long development times. Such MTT implementations require custom hardware, yet offer very little flexibility with ever changing data sets and target tracking requirements. This research explores how to supplement and enhance MTT performance with an existing graphics processing unit (GPU) on a general computing platform. Typical computers are already equipped with powerful GPUs to support various games and multimedia applications. However, such GPUs are not currently being used in desktop MTT applications. This research explores if and how a GPU can be used to supplement and enhance MTT implementations on a flexible common desktop computer without requiring costly dedicated MTT hardware and software. A MTT system was developed in MATLAB to provide baseline performance metrics for processing 24-bit, 1920x1080 color video footage filmed at 30 frames per second. The baseline MATLAB implementation is further enhanced with various custom C functions to speed up the MTT implementation for fair comparison and analysis. From the MATLAB MTT implementation, this research identifies potential areas of improvement through use of the GPU. The bottleneck image processing functions (frame differencing) were converted to execute on the GPU. On average, the GPU code executed 287% faster than the MATLAB implementation. Some individual functions actually executed 20 times faster than the baseline. These results indicate that the GPU is a viable source to significantly increase the performance of MTT with a low-cost hardware solution

    Visually querying object-oriented databases

    Bibliography: pages 141-145.As database requirements increase, the ability to construct database queries efficiently becomes more important. The traditional means of querying a database is to write a textual query, such as writing in SQL to query a relational database. Visual query languages are an alternative means of querying a database; a visual query language can embody powerful query abstraction and user feedback techniques, thereby making them potentially easier to use. In this thesis, we develop a visual query system for ODMG-compliant object-oriented databases, called QUIVER. QUIVER has a comprehensive expressive power; apart from supporting data types such as sets, bags, arrays, lists, tuples, objects and relationships, it supports aggregate functions, methods and sub-queries. The language is also consistent, as constructs with similar functionality have similar visual representations. QUIVER uses the DOT layout engine to automatically layout a query; QUIVER queries are easily constructed, as the system does not constrain the spatial arrangement of query items. QUIVER also supports a query library, allowing queries to be saved, retrieved and shared among users. A substantial part of the design has been implemented using the ODMG-compliant database system O₂, and the usability of the interface as well as the query language itself is presented. Visual queries are translated to OQL, the standard query language proposed by the ODMG, and query answers are presented using O₂ Look. During the course of our investigation, we conducted a user evaluation to compare QUIVER and OQL. The results were extremely encouraging in favour of QUIVER

    Software Grand Exposure: SGX Cache Attacks Are Practical

    Side-channel information leakage is a known limitation of SGX. Researchers have demonstrated that secret-dependent information can be extracted from enclave execution through page-fault access patterns. Consequently, various recent research efforts are actively seeking countermeasures to SGX side-channel attacks. It is widely assumed that SGX may be vulnerable to other side channels, such as cache access pattern monitoring, as well. However, prior to our work, the practicality and the extent of such information leakage was not studied. In this paper we demonstrate that cache-based attacks are indeed a serious threat to the confidentiality of SGX-protected programs. Our goal was to design an attack that is hard to mitigate using known defenses, and therefore we mount our attack without interrupting enclave execution. This approach has major technical challenges, since the existing cache monitoring techniques experience significant noise if the victim process is not interrupted. We designed and implemented novel attack techniques to reduce this noise by leveraging the capabilities of the privileged adversary. Our attacks are able to recover confidential information from SGX enclaves, which we illustrate in two example cases: extraction of an entire RSA-2048 key during RSA decryption, and detection of specific human genome sequences during genomic indexing. We show that our attacks are more effective than previous cache attacks and harder to mitigate than previous SGX side-channel attacks

    Towards recovering architectural information from images of architectural diagrams

    The architecture of a software system is often described with diagrams embedded in the documentation. However, these diagrams are normally stored and shared as images, losing track of model-level architectural information and refraining software engineers from working on the architectural model later on. In this context, tools able to extract architectural information from images can be of great help. In this article, we present a framework called IMEAV for processing architectural diagrams (based on speci c viewtypes) and recovering information from them. We have instantiated our framework to analyze \\module views and evaluated this prototype with an image dataset.
