    Gait recognition based on shape and motion analysis of silhouette contours

    This paper presents a three-phase gait recognition method that analyses the spatio-temporal shape and dynamic motion (STS-DM) characteristics of a human subject’s silhouettes to identify the subject in the presence of most of the challenging factors that affect existing gait recognition systems. In phase 1, phase-weighted magnitude spectra of the Fourier descriptor of the silhouette contours at ten phases of a gait period are used to analyse the spatio-temporal changes of the subject’s shape. A component-based Fourier descriptor based on anatomical studies of human body is used to achieve robustness against shape variations caused by all common types of small carrying conditions with folded hands, at the subject’s back and in upright position. In phase 2, a full-body shape and motion analysis is performed by fitting ellipses to contour segments of ten phases of a gait period and using a histogram matching with Bhattacharyya distance of parameters of the ellipses as dissimilarity scores. In phase 3, dynamic time warping is used to analyse the angular rotation pattern of the subject’s leading knee with a consideration of arm-swing over a gait period to achieve identification that is invariant to walking speed, limited clothing variations, hair style changes and shadows under feet. The match scores generated in the three phases are fused using weight-based score-level fusion for robust identification in the presence of missing and distorted frames, and occlusion in the scene. Experimental analyses on various publicly available data sets show that STS-DM outperforms several state-of-the-art gait recognition methods

    Image Encryption and Stegenography Based on Computational Single Pixel Imaging

    Multiple layers of information security are introduced based on computational ghost imaging (CGI). We show, in the first step, that it is possible to design a very reliable image encryption scheme using 3D computational ghost imaging with two single-pixel detectors sending data through two channels. Through the Normalized Root Mean Square scale, it is then shown that a further level of security can be achieved by merging data-carrying channels into one and using a coded order for their placement in the sequence of bucket data carried by the single channel. Yet another layer of security is introduced through hiding the actual grayscale image inside another image such that the hidden image cannot be recognized by naked eyes. We then retrieve the hidden image from a CGI reconstructed image. It is shown that the proposed scheme increases the security and robustness such that an attacker needs more than 96 percent of the coded order to recover the hidden data. Storing a grayscale image in a ghost image and retrieving different intensities for the hidden image is unprecedented and could be of interest to the information security community

    THE REALISM OF ALGORITHMIC HUMAN FIGURES A Study of Selected Examples 1964 to 2001

    It is more than forty years since the first wireframe images of the Boeing Man revealed a stylized hu-man pilot in a simulated pilot's cabin. Since then, it has almost become standard to include scenes in Hollywood movies which incorporate virtual human actors. A trait particularly recognizable in the games industry world-wide is the eagerness to render athletic muscular young men, and young women with hour-glass body-shapes, to traverse dangerous cyberworlds as invincible heroic figures. Tremendous efforts in algorithmic modeling, animation and rendering are spent to produce a realistic and believable appearance of these algorithmic humans. This thesis develops two main strands of research by the interpreting a selection of examples. Firstly, in the computer graphics context, over the forty years, it documents the development of the creation of the naturalistic appearance of images (usually called photorealism ). In particular, it de-scribes and reviews the impact of key algorithms in the course of the journey of the algorithmic human figures towards realism . Secondly, taking a historical perspective, this work provides an analysis of computer graphics in relation to the concept of realism. A comparison of realistic images of human figures throughout history with their algorithmically-generated counterparts allows us to see that computer graphics has both learned from previous and contemporary art movements such as photorealism but also taken out-of-context elements, symbols and properties from these art movements with a questionable naivety. Therefore, this work also offers a critique of the justification of the use of their typical conceptualization in computer graphics. Although the astounding technical achievements in the field of algorithmically-generated human figures are paralleled by an equally astounding disregard for the history of visual culture, from the beginning 1964 till the breakthrough 2001, in the period of the digital information processing machine, a new approach has emerged to meet the apparently incessant desire of humans to create artificial counterparts of themselves. Conversely, the theories of traditional realism have to be extended to include new problems that those active algorithmic human figures present

    The main trend of computer graphics is the creation of photorealistic images however, there is increasing interest in the simulation of artistic and illustrative techniques. This thesis investigates a profile based technique for automatically extracting artistic sketches from regular grid digital elevation models. The results resemble those drawn by skilled cartographers and artists.The use of cartographic line simplification algorithms, which are usually applied to complex two-dimensional lines such as coastlines, allow a set of most important points on the terrain surface to be identified, these form the basis for sketching.This thesis also contains a wide ranging review of terrain representation techniques and suggests a new taxonomy

    ThesisComputer Aided Design (CAD), Rapid Prototyping (RP) and Computer Aided Tomography (CAT) technologies were researched. The project entails a unique combination of the abovementioned technologies, which had to be mastered by the author, on local and international terms. Nine software packages were evaluated to determine the modus operandi, required input and final output results. Fifty Rapid Prototyping systems were investigated to determine the strong and weak areas of the various systems, which showed that prototype materials, machine cost and growing time play an essential role. Thirty Reverse Engineering systems were also researched. Six different RE methods were recorded with several commercial systems available. Nineteen case studies were completed by using several different Computer Aided Tomography (CAT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) centers. Each scanning centre has different apparatus and is discussed in detail in the various case studies. The focus of this project is the data transfer of two dimensional CAT scanning data to threedimensional prototypes by using Reverse Engineering (RE) and Rapid Prototyping (RP). It is therefore of cardinal importance that one is familiar and understands the various fields of interest namely Reverse Engineering, Computer Aided Tomography and Rapid Prototyping. Each of these fields will be discussed in detail, with the latest developments in these fields covered as well. Case studies and research performed in the medical field should gain the medical industry's confidence.
