How to Find Suitable Ontologies Using an Ontology-based WWW Broker
Knowledge reuse by means of outologies now faces three important problems: (1) there are no standardized identifying features that characterize ontologies from the user point of view; (2) there are no web sites using the same logical organization, presenting relevant information about ontologies; and (3) the search for appropriate ontologies is hard, time-consuming and usually fruitless. To solve the above problems, we present: (1) a living set of features that allow us to characterize ontologies from the user point of view and have the same logical organization; (2) a living domain ontology about ontologies (called ReferenceOntology) that gathers, describes and has links to existing ontologies; and (3) (ONTO)2Agent, the ontology-based www broker about ontologies that uses the Reference Ontology as a source of its knowledge and retrieves descriptions of ontologies that satisfy a given set of constraints. Beliefs and Conflicts in a Real World Multiagent System
In a real world multiagent system, where the
agents are faced with partial, incomplete and
intrinsically dynamic knowledge, conflicts are
inevitable. Frequently, different agents have
goals or beliefs that cannot hold simultaneously.
Conflict resolution methodologies have to be
adopted to overcome such undesirable occurrences.
In this paper we investigate the application of
distributed belief revision techniques as the support
for conflict resolution in the analysis of the
validity of the candidate beams to be produced
in the CERN particle accelerators.
This CERN multiagent system contains a higher
hierarchy agent, the Specialist agent, which
makes use of meta-knowledge (on how the conflicting
beliefs have been produced by the other
agents) in order to detect which beliefs should be
abandoned. Upon solving a conflict, the Specialist
instructs the involved agents to revise their
beliefs accordingly.
Conflicts in the problem domain are mapped into
conflicting beliefs of the distributed belief revision
system, where they can be handled by
proven formal methods. This technique builds
on well established concepts and combines them
in a new way to solve important problems. We
find this approach generally applicable in several
domains
Conceptual Linking: Ontology-based Open Hypermedia
This paper describes the attempts of the COHSE project to define and deploy a Conceptual Open Hypermedia Service. Consisting of • an ontological reasoning service which is used to represent a sophisticated conceptual model of document terms and their relationships; • a Web-based open hypermedia link service that can offer a range of different link-providing facilities in a scalable and non-intrusive fashion; and integrated to form a conceptual hypermedia system to enable documents to be linked via metadata describing their contents and hence to improve the consistency and breadth of linking of WWW documents at retrieval time (as readers browse the documents) and authoring time (as authors create the documents)
