Hypermedia Learning Objects System - On the Way to a Semantic Educational Web
While eLearning systems become more and more popular in daily education,
available applications lack opportunities to structure, annotate and manage
their contents in a high-level fashion. General efforts to improve these
deficits are taken by initiatives to define rich meta data sets and a
semanticWeb layer. In the present paper we introduce Hylos, an online learning
system. Hylos is based on a cellular eLearning Object (ELO) information model
encapsulating meta data conforming to the LOM standard. Content management is
provisioned on this semantic meta data level and allows for variable,
dynamically adaptable access structures. Context aware multifunctional links
permit a systematic navigation depending on the learners and didactic needs,
thereby exploring the capabilities of the semantic web. Hylos is built upon the
more general Multimedia Information Repository (MIR) and the MIR adaptive
context linking environment (MIRaCLE), its linking extension. MIR is an open
system supporting the standards XML, Corba and JNDI. Hylos benefits from
manageable information structures, sophisticated access logic and high-level
authoring tools like the ELO editor responsible for the semi-manual creation of
meta data and WYSIWYG like content editing.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
SMIL State: an architecture and implementation for adaptive time-based web applications
In this paper we examine adaptive time-based web applications (or presentations). These are interactive presentations where time dictates which parts of the application are presented (providing the major structuring paradigm), and that require interactivity and other dynamic adaptation. We investigate the current technologies available to create such presentations and their shortcomings, and suggest a mechanism for addressing these shortcomings. This mechanism, SMIL State, can be used to add user-defined state to declarative time-based languages such as SMIL or SVG animation, thereby enabling the author to create control flows that are difficult to realize within the temporal containment model of the host languages. In addition, SMIL State can be used as a bridging mechanism between languages, enabling easy integration of external components into the web application. Finally, SMIL State enables richer expressions for content control. This paper defines SMIL State in terms of an introductory example, followed by a detailed specification of the State model. Next, the implementation of this model is discussed. We conclude with a set of potential use cases, including dynamic content adaptation and delayed insertion of custom content such as advertisements. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC
From Personalization to Adaptivity: Creating Immersive Visits through Interactive Digital Storytelling at the Acropolis Museum
Storytelling has recently become a popular way to guide museum visitors, replacing traditional exhibit-centric descriptions by story-centric cohesive narrations with references to the exhibits and multimedia content. This work presents the fundamental elements of the CHESS project approach, the goal of which is to provide adaptive, personalized, interactive storytelling for museum visits. We shortly present the CHESS project and its background, we detail the proposed storytelling and user models, we describe the provided functionality and we outline the main tools and mechanisms employed. Finally, we present the preliminary results of a recent evaluation study that are informing several directions for future work
SmartBook – the future E-book and educatonal hypermedia

The vision entails further development of technologies that will facilitate the creation and use of a new generation of ‘smart’ books: e-books that are evolving, highly interactive, customisable, adaptable, intelligent, and furnished with a rich set of collaborative authoring and reading support services. The proposed set of tools will be integrated into an intelligent framework for collaborative book authoring and experiencing called SmartBook. Distributed Learning System Design: A New Approach and an Agenda for Future Research
This article presents a theoretical framework designed to guide distributed learning design, with the goal of enhancing the effectiveness of distributed learning systems. The authors begin with a review of the extant research on distributed learning design, and themes embedded in this literature are extracted and discussed to identify critical gaps that should be addressed by future work in this area. A conceptual framework that integrates instructional objectives, targeted competencies, instructional design considerations, and technological features is then developed to address the most pressing gaps in current research and practice. The rationale and logic underlying this framework is explicated. The framework is designed to help guide trainers and instructional designers through critical stages of the distributed learning system design process. In addition, it is intended to help researchers identify critical issues that should serve as the focus of future research efforts. Recommendations and future research directions are presented and discussed
Toward a Scalable Census of Dashboard Designs in the Wild: A Case Study with Tableau Public
Dashboards remain ubiquitous artifacts for presenting or reasoning with data
across different domains. Yet, there has been little work that provides a
quantifiable, systematic, and descriptive overview of dashboard designs at
scale. We propose a schematic representation of dashboard designs as node-link
graphs to better understand their spatial and interactive structures. We apply
our approach to a dataset of 25,620 dashboards curated from Tableau Public to
provide a descriptive overview of the core building blocks of dashboards in the
wild and derive common dashboard design patterns. To guide future research, we
make our dashboard corpus publicly available and discuss its application toward
