    Abstract As the number of transistors that are integrated onto a silicon die continues to increase, the compute power is becoming a commodity. This has enabled a whole host of new applications that rely on high-throughput computations. Recently, the need for faster and cost-effective applications in form-factor constrained environments has driven an interest in on-chip acceleration of algorithms based on Monte Carlo simula- Processor. Futhermore, we have created a framework for further increasing parallelism by scaling our architecture across multiple compute devices and by extending our original design to a multi-FPGA system nearly linear increase in acceleration with logic resources was achieved. iv Acknowledgements One could hardly put into words the contributions made to this work by the many wonderful people who surround me on a daily basis.     Fast algorithm for real-time rings reconstruction

    The GAP project is dedicated to study the application of GPU in several contexts in which real-time response is important to take decisions. The definition of real-time depends on the application under study, ranging from answer time of ÎĽs up to several hours in case of very computing intensive task. During this conference we presented our work in low level triggers [1] [2] and high level triggers [3] in high energy physics experiments, and specific application for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) [4] [5] and cone-beam CT [6]. Apart from the study of dedicated solution to decrease the latency due to data transport and preparation, the computing algorithms play an essential role in any GPU application. In this contribution, we show an original algorithm developed for triggers application, to accelerate the ring reconstruction in RICH detector when it is not possible to have seeds for reconstruction from external trackers

    Development of an Unsteady Aeroelastic Solver for the Analysis of Modern Turbomachinery Designs

    Developers of aircraft gas turbine engines continually strive for greater efficiency and higher thrust-to-weight ratio designs. To meet these goals, advanced designs generally feature thin, low aspect airfoils, which offer increased performance but are highly susceptible to flow-induced vibrations. As a result, High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) has become a universal problem throughout the gas turbine industry and unsteady aeroelastic computational models are needed to predict and prevent these problems in modern turbomachinery designs. This research presents the development of a 3D unsteady aeroelastic solver for turbomachinery applications. To accomplish this, a well established turbomachinery Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code called Corsair is loosely coupled to the commercial Computational Structural Solver (CSD) Ansys® through the use of a Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) module. Significant modifications are made to Corsair to handle the integration of the FSI module and improve overall performance. To properly account for fluid grid deformations dictated by the FSI module, temporal based coordinate transformation metrics are incorporated into Corsair. Wall functions with user specified surface roughness are also added to reduce fluid grid density requirements near solid surfaces. To increase overall performance and ease of future modifications to the source code, Corsair is rewritten in Fortran 90 with an emphasis on reducing memory usage and improving source code readability and structure. As part of this effort, the shared memory data structure of Corsair is replaced with a distributed model. Domain decomposition of individual grids in the radial direction is also incorporated into Corsair for additional parallelization, along with a utility to automate this process in an optimal manner based on user input. This additional parallelization helps offset the inability to use the fine grain mp-threads parallelization in the original code on non-distributed memory architectures such as the PC Beowulf cluster used for this research. Conversion routines and utilities are created to handle differences in grid formats between Corsair and the FSI module. The resulting aeroelastic solver is tested using two simplified configurations. First, the well understood case of a flexible cylinder in cross flow is studied with the natural frequency of the cylinder set to the shedding frequency of the Von Karman streets. The cylinder is self excited and thus demonstrates the correct exchange of energy between the fluid and structural models. The second test case is based on the fourth standard configuration and demonstrates the ability of the solver to predict the dominant vibrational modes of an aeroelastic turbomachinery blade. For this case, a single blade from the fourth standard configuration is subjected to a step function from zero loading to the converged flow solution loading in order to excite the structural modes of the blade. These modes are then compared to those obtained from an in vacuo Ansys® analysis with good agreement between the two

    A mixed-signal computer architecture and its application to power system problems

    Radical changes are taking place in the landscape of modern power systems. This massive shift in the way the system is designed and operated has been termed the advent of the ``smart grid''. One of its implications is a strong market pull for faster power system analysis computing. This work is concerned in particular with transient simulation, which is one of the most demanding power system analyses. This refers to the imitation of the operation of the real-world system over time, for time scales that cover the majority of slow electromechanical transient phenomena. The general mathematical formulation of the simulation problem includes a set of non-linear differential algebraic equations (DAEs). In the algebraic part of this set, heavy linear algebra computations are included, which are related to the admittance matrix of the topology. These computations are a critical factor to the overall performance of a transient simulator. This work proposes the use of analog electronic computing as a means of exceeding the performance barriers of conventional digital computers for the linear algebra operations. Analog computing is integrated in the frame of a power system transient simulator yielding significant computational performance benefits to the latter. Two hybrid, analog and digital computers are presented. The first prototype has been implemented using reconfigurable hardware. In its core, analog computing is used for linear algebra operations, while pipelined digital resources on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) handle all remaining computations. The properties of the analog hardware are thoroughly examined, with special attention to accuracy and timing. The application of the platform to the transient analysis of power system dynamics showed a speedup of two orders of magnitude against conventional software solutions. The second prototype is proposed as a future conceptual architecture that would overcome the limitations of the already implemented hardware, while retaining its virtues. The design space of this future architecture has been thoroughly explored, with the help of a software emulator. For one possible suggested implementation, speedups of four orders of magnitude against software solvers have been observed for the linear algebra operations

    Perception of Unstructured Environments for Autonomous Off-Road Vehicles

    Autonome Fahrzeuge benötigen die Fähigkeit zur Perzeption als eine notwendige Voraussetzung für eine kontrollierbare und sichere Interaktion, um ihre Umgebung wahrzunehmen und zu verstehen. Perzeption für strukturierte Innen- und Außenumgebungen deckt wirtschaftlich lukrative Bereiche, wie den autonomen Personentransport oder die Industrierobotik ab, während die Perzeption unstrukturierter Umgebungen im Forschungsfeld der Umgebungswahrnehmung stark unterrepräsentiert ist. Die analysierten unstrukturierten Umgebungen stellen eine besondere Herausforderung dar, da die vorhandenen, natürlichen und gewachsenen Geometrien meist keine homogene Struktur aufweisen und ähnliche Texturen sowie schwer zu trennende Objekte dominieren. Dies erschwert die Erfassung dieser Umgebungen und deren Interpretation, sodass Perzeptionsmethoden speziell für diesen Anwendungsbereich konzipiert und optimiert werden müssen. In dieser Dissertation werden neuartige und optimierte Perzeptionsmethoden für unstrukturierte Umgebungen vorgeschlagen und in einer ganzheitlichen, dreistufigen Pipeline für autonome Geländefahrzeuge kombiniert: Low-Level-, Mid-Level- und High-Level-Perzeption. Die vorgeschlagenen klassischen Methoden und maschinellen Lernmethoden (ML) zur Perzeption bzw.~Wahrnehmung ergänzen sich gegenseitig. Darüber hinaus ermöglicht die Kombination von Perzeptions- und Validierungsmethoden für jede Ebene eine zuverlässige Wahrnehmung der möglicherweise unbekannten Umgebung, wobei lose und eng gekoppelte Validierungsmethoden kombiniert werden, um eine ausreichende, aber flexible Bewertung der vorgeschlagenen Perzeptionsmethoden zu gewährleisten. Alle Methoden wurden als einzelne Module innerhalb der in dieser Arbeit vorgeschlagenen Perzeptions- und Validierungspipeline entwickelt, und ihre flexible Kombination ermöglicht verschiedene Pipelinedesigns für eine Vielzahl von Geländefahrzeugen und Anwendungsfällen je nach Bedarf. Low-Level-Perzeption gewährleistet eine eng gekoppelte Konfidenzbewertung für rohe 2D- und 3D-Sensordaten, um Sensorausfälle zu erkennen und eine ausreichende Genauigkeit der Sensordaten zu gewährleisten. Darüber hinaus werden neuartige Kalibrierungs- und Registrierungsansätze für Multisensorsysteme in der Perzeption vorgestellt, welche lediglich die Struktur der Umgebung nutzen, um die erfassten Sensordaten zu registrieren: ein halbautomatischer Registrierungsansatz zur Registrierung mehrerer 3D~Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Sensoren und ein vertrauensbasiertes Framework, welches verschiedene Registrierungsmethoden kombiniert und die Registrierung verschiedener Sensoren mit unterschiedlichen Messprinzipien ermöglicht. Dabei validiert die Kombination mehrerer Registrierungsmethoden die Registrierungsergebnisse in einer eng gekoppelten Weise. Mid-Level-Perzeption ermöglicht die 3D-Rekonstruktion unstrukturierter Umgebungen mit zwei Verfahren zur Schätzung der Disparität von Stereobildern: ein klassisches, korrelationsbasiertes Verfahren für Hyperspektralbilder, welches eine begrenzte Menge an Test- und Validierungsdaten erfordert, und ein zweites Verfahren, welches die Disparität aus Graustufenbildern mit neuronalen Faltungsnetzen (CNNs) schätzt. Neuartige Disparitätsfehlermetriken und eine Evaluierungs-Toolbox für die 3D-Rekonstruktion von Stereobildern ergänzen die vorgeschlagenen Methoden zur Disparitätsschätzung aus Stereobildern und ermöglichen deren lose gekoppelte Validierung. High-Level-Perzeption konzentriert sich auf die Interpretation von einzelnen 3D-Punktwolken zur Befahrbarkeitsanalyse, Objekterkennung und Hindernisvermeidung. Eine Domänentransferanalyse für State-of-the-art-Methoden zur semantischen 3D-Segmentierung liefert Empfehlungen für eine möglichst exakte Segmentierung in neuen Zieldomänen ohne eine Generierung neuer Trainingsdaten. Der vorgestellte Trainingsansatz für 3D-Segmentierungsverfahren mit CNNs kann die benötigte Menge an Trainingsdaten weiter reduzieren. Methoden zur Erklärbarkeit künstlicher Intelligenz vor und nach der Modellierung ermöglichen eine lose gekoppelte Validierung der vorgeschlagenen High-Level-Methoden mit Datensatzbewertung und modellunabhängigen Erklärungen für CNN-Vorhersagen. Altlastensanierung und Militärlogistik sind die beiden Hauptanwendungsfälle in unstrukturierten Umgebungen, welche in dieser Arbeit behandelt werden. Diese Anwendungsszenarien zeigen auch, wie die Lücke zwischen der Entwicklung einzelner Methoden und ihrer Integration in die Verarbeitungskette für autonome Geländefahrzeuge mit Lokalisierung, Kartierung, Planung und Steuerung geschlossen werden kann. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die vorgeschlagene Pipeline flexible Perzeptionslösungen für autonome Geländefahrzeuge bietet und die begleitende Validierung eine exakte und vertrauenswürdige Perzeption unstrukturierter Umgebungen gewährleistet
