    A Survey of Quality of Service Differentiation Mechanisms for Optical Burst Switching Networks

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.This paper presents an overview of Quality of Service (QoS) differentiation mechanisms proposed for Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks. OBS has been proposed to couple the benefits of both circuit and packet switching for the ‘‘on demand’’ use of capacity in the future optical Internet. In such a case, QoS support imposes some important challenges before this technology is deployed. This paper takes a broader view on QoS, including QoS differentiation not only at the burst but also at the transport levels for OBS networks. A classification of existing QoS differentiation mechanisms for OBS is given and their efficiency and complexity are comparatively discussed. We provide numerical examples on how QoS differentiation with respect to burst loss rate and transport layer throughput can be achieved in OBS networks. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    An assembly and offset assignment scheme for self-similar traffic in optical burst switching

    Includes bibliographical references.Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a viable technology for the next generation core network. We propose an FEC-assembly scheme that efficiently assembles self-similar traffic and a Pareto-offset assignment rather than a constant offset assignment. Two buffers, a packet buffer and a burst buffer, are implemented at the Label Edge Router (LER), buffering traffic in the electronic domain. The assembler, between the packet and burst buffers, is served by the packet queue while the assembler serves the burst queue. We outline advantages of why burst assembly cannot be implemented independent of offset assignment. The two schemes must be implemented in a complementary way if QoS is to be realized in an OBS network. We show that there is a direct relation between OBS network performance with burst assembly and offset assignment. We present simulation results of the assembly and offset assignment proposals using the ns2 network simulator. Our results show that the combination of the proposed FEC-Based assembly scheme with the proposed Pareto-offset assignment scheme give better network performance in terms of burst drop, resource contention and delay. Key to any traffic shaping is the nature traffic being shaped. This work also compares performance of both traditional exponential traffic with realistic Self-Similar traffic of Internet traffic on the proposed assembly and offset assignment schemes. In our simulations, we assume that all Label Switch Routers (LSR) have wavelength converters and are without optical buffers. We use Latest Available Unused Channel with Void Filling (LAUC-VF) scheduling scheme and use Just Enough Time (JET) reservation scheme

    Routage adaptatif et qualité de service dans les réseaux optiques à commutation de rafales

    Les réseaux optiques à commutation de rafales (OBS) sont des candidats pour jouer un rôle important dans le cadre des réseaux optiques de nouvelle génération. Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons au routage adaptatif et au provisionnement de la qualité de service dans ce type de réseaux. Dans une première partie de la thèse, nous nous intéressons à la capacité du routage multi-chemins et du routage alternatif (par déflection) à améliorer les performances des réseaux OBS, pro-activement pour le premier et ré-activement pour le second. Dans ce contexte, nous proposons une approche basée sur l’apprentissage par renforcement où des agents placés dans tous les nœuds du réseau coopèrent pour apprendre, continuellement, les chemins du routage et les chemins alternatifs optimaux selon l’état actuel du réseau. Les résultats numériques montrent que cette approche améliore les performances des réseaux OBS comparativement aux solutions proposées dans la littérature. Dans la deuxième partie de cette thèse, nous nous intéressons au provisionnement absolu de la qualité de service où les performances pire-cas des classes de trafic de priorité élevée sont garanties quantitativement. Plus spécifiquement, notre objectif est de garantir la transmission sans pertes des rafales de priorité élevée à l’intérieur du réseau OBS tout en préservant le multiplexage statistique et l’utilisation efficace des ressources qui caractérisent les réseaux OBS. Aussi, nous considérons l’amélioration des performances du trafic best effort. Ainsi, nous proposons deux approches : une approche basée sur les nœuds et une approche basée sur les chemins. Dans l’approche basée sur les nœuds, un ensemble de longueurs d’onde est assigné à chaque nœud du bord du réseau OBS pour qu’il puisse envoyer son trafic garanti. Cette assignation prend en considération les distances physiques entre les nœuds du bord. En outre, nous proposons un algorithme de sélection des longueurs d’onde pour améliorer les performances des rafales best effort. Dans l’approche basée sur les chemins, le provisionnement absolu de la qualité de service est fourni au niveau des chemins entre les nœuds du bord du réseau OBS. À cette fin, nous proposons une approche de routage et d’assignation des longueurs d’onde qui a pour but la réduction du nombre requis de longueurs d’onde pour établir des chemins sans contentions. Néanmoins, si cet objectif ne peut pas être atteint à cause du nombre limité de longueurs d’onde, nous proposons de synchroniser les chemins en conflit sans le besoin pour des équipements additionnels. Là aussi, nous proposons un algorithme de sélection des longueurs d’onde pour les rafales best effort. Les résultats numériques montrent que l’approche basée sur les nœuds et l’approche basée sur les chemins fournissent le provisionnement absolu de la qualité de service pour le trafic garanti et améliorent les performances du trafic best effort. En outre, quand le nombre de longueurs d’ondes est suffisant, l’approche basée sur les chemins peut accommoder plus de trafic garanti et améliorer les performances du trafic best effort par rapport à l’approche basée sur les nœuds.Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks are candidates to play an important role in the context of next generation optical networks. In this thesis, we are interested in adaptive routing and quality of service provisioning for these networks. In the first part of the thesis, we study the capability of multi-path routing and alternative routing (deflection routing) to improve the performance of the OBS network proactively for the former and reactively for the latter. In this context, we propose a reinforcement learning-based approach where learning agents, placed in each OBS node, cooperate to learn, continuously, optimal routing paths and alternative paths according to the current state of the network. Numerical results show that the proposed approach improves the performance of the OBS network compared to existing solutions in the literature. In the second part of the thesis, we consider the problem of absolute quality of service provisioning for OBS networks where worst-case performance of high priority traffic is guaranteed quantitatively. Particularly, we are interested in the loss-free transmission, inside the OBS network, of high priority bursts, while preserving statistical multiplexing gain and high resources utilization of the OBS network. Also, we aim to improve the performance of best effort traffic. Hence, we propose two approaches: (a) the node-based approach; and (b) the path-based approach. In the node-based approach, we propose to assign a set of wavelengths to each OBS edge node that it can use to send its guaranteed traffic. This assignment takes into consideration physical distances between edge nodes. Furthermore, we propose a wavelength selection algorithm to improve the performance of best effort bursts. In the path-based approach, absolute quality of service provisioning is offered at end-to-end path level. To do this, we propose a routing and wavelength assignment approach which aims to reduce the number of wavelengths required to establish contention free paths. Nevertheless, if this objective cannot be reached because of the limited number of wavelengths in each fiber link, we propose an approach to synchronize overlapping paths without the need for additional equipments for synchronization. Here again, we propose a wavelength selection algorithm for best effort bursts. Numerical results show that both the node-based and the path-based approaches successfully provide absolute quality of service provisioning for guaranteed traffic and improve the performance of best effort traffic. Also, path-based approach could accommodate more guaranteed traffic and improve the performance of best effort traffic compared to node-based approach when the number of wavelengths is sufficient

    Offset time-emulated architecture for optical burst switching-modelling and performance evaluation

    L'evolució de les xarxes publiques de transport de dades destaca per el continu augment de la demanda de tràfic a la que estan sotmeses. La causa és la imparable popularització d'Internet i del seu ús per a tot tipus d'aplicacions. Les xarxes de commutació de ràfegues òptiques (OBS: Optical Bursts Switching) són una solució extraordinàriament prometedora per la pròxima generació de xarxes, tant per la flexibilitat que ofereixen com per el seu alt rendiment fruit de l'explotació de la multiplexació estadística en el domini òptic.Aquesta tesi presenta l'anàlisi, modelització i avaluació de les xarxes de commutació de ràfegues òptiques basades en l'emulació del temps de compensació (emulated offset time: E-OBS). El concepte d'E-OBS defineix una arquitectura de xarxa OBS per al transportar i commutar ràfegues òptiques en una xarxa troncal en la que, al contrari de l'arquitectura convencional (C-OBS) en la que el temps de compensació s'introdueix des dels nodes d'accés, el temps de compensació s'introdueix en cadascun dels nodes de la xarxa per mitjà d'un retardador de fibra addicional. L'arquitectura E-OBS permet superar algunes de les desavantatges inherents a arquitectures C-OBS, però la seva gran virtut és la compatibilitat amb les xarxes de commutació de circuits òptics (OCS: Optical Circuit Switching) actuals i les futures xarxes de commutació de paquets òptics (OPS: Optical Packet Switching), de manera que les xarxes OBS basades en una arquitectura E-OBS) poden facilitat enormement la transició de unes a les altres.A ala vista dels principals requeriments de disseny de les xarxes OBS, que són la resolució de contencions en el domini òptic, la provisió de qualitat de servei (QoS) i l'òptim encaminament de les ràfegues per tal de minimitzar la congestió de la xarxa, . en aquesta tesi es proposa un disseny de l'arquitectura E-OBS basada en (i) un mètode viable per a la provisió del temps de compensació, (ii) una qualitat alta global de servei, i (iii) un mecanisme d'encaminament que minimitzi congestió de xarxa.- La primera part d'aquesta tesi proporciona la informació documental necessària per al disseny d'E-OBS.- La segona part se centra en l'estudi de la funcionalitat i viabilitat de l'arquitectura E-OBS. S'introdueixen els principis d'operació d'E-OBS i s'identifiquen els principals esculls que presenten les arquitectures C-OBS i que deixen de ser-ho en una arquitectura E-OBS. Alguns d'aquests esculls són la dificultat d'utilitzar un algorisme d'encaminament amb rutes alternatives, la complexitat dels algoritmes de reserva de recursos i la seva falta d'equitat, la complexitat en la provisió de la QoS, etc. En aquesta segona part es constata que l'arquitectura E-OBS redueix la complexitat dels de reserva de recursos i es verifica la viabilitat d'operació i de funcionament de la provisió del tremps de compensació en aquesta arquitectura a partir de figures de comportament obtingudes amb retardadors de fibra comercialment disponibles.- La tercera part encara el problema de la provisió de la QoS. Primer s'hi revisen els conceptes bàsics de QoS així com els mecanismes de tractament de la QoS per a xarxes OBS fent-ne una comparació qualitativa i de rendiment de tots ells. Com a resultat s'obté que el mecanisme que presenta un millor comportament és el d'avortament de la transmissió de les ràfegues de més baixa prioritat quan aquestes col·lisionen amb una de prioritat més alta (es l'anomenat Burst Preemption mechanism), el qual en alguns casos presenta un problema de senyalització innecessària. Aquesta tercera part es conclou amb la proposta d'un mecanisme de finestra a afegir al esquema de Burst Preemption que només funciona sobre una arquitectura E-OBS i que soluciona aquest problema.- En la quarta part s'afronta el problema de l'encaminament en xarxes OBS. S'estudia el comportament dels algoritmes d'encaminament adaptatius, els aïllats amb rutes alternatives i els multicamí distribuïts, sobre xarxes E-OBS. A la vista dels resultats no massa satisfactoris que s'obtenen, es planteja una solució alternativa que es basa en model d'optimització no lineal. Es formulen i resolen dos models d'optimització per als algoritmes encaminament de font multicamí que redueixen notablement la congestió en les xarxes OBS.Finalment, aquesta tesi conclou que l'arquitectura E-OBS és factible, que és més eficient que la C-OBS, que proveeix eficaçment QoS, i que és capaç d'operar amb diverses estratègies d'encaminament i de reduir eficaçment la congestió de xarxa.The fact that the Internet is a packet-based connection-less network is the main driver to develop a data-centric transport network. In this context, the optical burst switching (OBS) technology is considered as a promising solution for reducing the gap between transmission and switching speeds in future networks.This thesis presents the analysis, modelling, and evaluation of the OBS network with Emulated offset-time provisioning (E-OBS). E-OBS defines an OBS network architecture to transport and switch optical data bursts in a core network. On the contrary to a conventional offset-time provisioning OBS (C-OBS) architecture, where a transmission offset time is introduced in the edge node, in an E-OBS network the offset time is provided in the core node by means of an additional fibre delay element. The architecture is motivated by several drawbacks inherent to C-OBS architectures. It should be pointed out that the E-OBS has not been studied intensively in the literature and this concept has been considered rather occasionally.Due to the limitations in optical processing and queuing, OBS networks need a special treatment so that they could solve problems typical of data-centric networks. Contention resolution in optical domain together with quality of service (QoS) provisioning for quality demanding services are, among other things, the main designing issues when developing OBS networks. Another important aspect is routing problem, which concerns effective balancing of traffic load so that to reduce burst congestion at overloaded links. Accounting for these requirements, the design objectives for the E-OBS architecture are (i) feasibility of offset-time provisioning, (ii) an overall high quality of service, and (iii) reduction of network congestion. These objectives are achieved by combining selected concepts and strategies, together with appropriate system design as well as network traffic engineering.The contributions in this thesis can be summarized as follows.- At the beginning, we introduce the principles of E-OBS operation and we demonstrate that C-OBS possesses many drawbacks that can be easily avoided in E-OBS. Some of the discussed issues are the problem of unfairness in resources reservation, difficulty with alternative routing, complexity of resources reservation algorithms, efficiency of burst scheduling, and complexity in QoS provisioning. The feasibility of E-OBS operation is investigated as well; in this context, the impact of congestion in control plane on OBS operation is studied. As a result, we confirm the feasibility of E-OBS operation with commercially available fibre delay elements.- Then, we provide both qualitative and quantitative comparison of the selected, most addressed in the literature, QoS mechanisms. As an outcome a burst preemption mechanism, which is characterized by the highest overall performance, is qualified for operating in E-OBS. Since the preemptive mechanism may produce the overbooking of resources in an OBS network we address this issue as well. We propose the preemption window mechanism to solve the problem. An analytical model of the mechanism legitimates correctness of our solution.- Finally, we concern with a routing problem - our routing objective is to help the contention resolution algorithms in the reduction of burst losses. We propose and evaluate two isolated alternative routing algorithms designed for labelled E-OBS networks. Then we study multi-path source routing and we use network optimization theory to improve it. The presented formulae for partial derivatives, to be used in a non-linear optimization problem, are straightforward and very fast to compute. It makes the proposed non-linear optimization method a viable alternative for linear programming formulations based on piecewise linear approximations.Concluding, E-OBS is shown to be a feasible OBS network architecture of profitable functionality, to support efficiently the QoS provisioning, and to be able to operate with different routing strategies and effectively reduce the network congestion

    Performance analysis of optical burst switching network

    In this dissertation, after reviewing the new paradigm in the optical switching network invoked by the DWDM technology and studying the changes of the schemes, we design the new optical burst switching networks, analyze the performance of the proposed scheme and interpret the analysis results. For design point of view, the fairness guaranteeing scheme and burst blocking reduction schemes in the mesh networks, loss less burst transmission scheme in DWDM metro ring networks are considered. As a future broad band optical alternative, optical burst switching has been receive much focus. We review the property of the optical switching technologies such as optical packet switching, optical circuit switching, and optical burst switching. The benefits of the optical burst switching is illustrated. Even though optical burst switching has several advantage, it has intrinsic technology barrier. We study the research activities to remove the basic problem of optical burst switching. Optical deflection, optical burst segmentation, burst cloning, and burst piggy backing scheme is considered. To improve the network performance, we design optical burst switching network in mesh networks and metro ring networks. We also implement the proposed network by our own developed network test bench. We verify the proposed network performance by analyzing the network mathematically in terms of blocking rate, delay and throughput. The theoretical results are compared with the simulation results. The verification shows that our proposed schemes outperform those of the conventional scheme. Our mathematical models are also matched to the simulation results. The interpretation of the verification shows that our assumption and theoretical analysis is well designed. The results illustrate that the difference between the simulation results and mathematical results is within the considerable margin. The contribution of the thesis is that the performance improvement schemes in both of the mesh network and ring network are proposed and analyzed. By considering feasibility of the future optical networks, proposed scheme in this thesis is more deployable in commercial network in terms of the burst blocking rate and delay as well as the network stability

    Characterization, design and re-optimization on multi-layer optical networks

    L'augment de volum de tràfic IP provocat per l'increment de serveis multimèdia com HDTV o vídeo conferència planteja nous reptes als operadors de xarxa per tal de proveir transmissió de dades eficient. Tot i que les xarxes mallades amb multiplexació per divisió de longitud d'ona (DWDM) suporten connexions òptiques de gran velocitat, aquestes xarxes manquen de flexibilitat per suportar tràfic d’inferior granularitat, fet que provoca un pobre ús d'ample de banda. Per fer front al transport d'aquest tràfic heterogeni, les xarxes multicapa representen la millor solució. Les xarxes òptiques multicapa permeten optimitzar la capacitat mitjançant l'empaquetament de connexions de baixa velocitat dins de connexions òptiques de gran velocitat. Durant aquesta operació, es crea i modifica constantment una topologia virtual dinàmica gràcies al pla de control responsable d’aquestes operacions. Donada aquesta dinamicitat, un ús sub-òptim de recursos pot existir a la xarxa en un moment donat. En aquest context, una re-optimizació periòdica dels recursos utilitzats pot ser aplicada, millorant així l'ús de recursos. Aquesta tesi està dedicada a la caracterització, planificació, i re-optimització de xarxes òptiques multicapa de nova generació des d’un punt de vista unificat incloent optimització als nivells de capa física, capa òptica, capa virtual i pla de control. Concretament s'han desenvolupat models estadístics i de programació matemàtica i meta-heurístiques. Aquest objectiu principal s'ha assolit mitjançant cinc objectius concrets cobrint diversos temes oberts de recerca. En primer lloc, proposem una metodologia estadística per millorar el càlcul del factor Q en problemes d'assignació de ruta i longitud d'ona considerant interaccions físiques (IA-RWA). Amb aquest objectiu, proposem dos models estadístics per computar l'efecte XPM (el coll d'ampolla en termes de computació i complexitat) per problemes IA-RWA, demostrant la precisió d’ambdós models en el càlcul del factor Q en escenaris reals de tràfic. En segon lloc i fixant-nos a la capa òptica, presentem un nou particionament del conjunt de longituds d'ona que permet maximitzar, respecte el cas habitual, la quantitat de tràfic extra proveït en entorns de protecció compartida. Concretament, definim diversos models estadístics per estimar la quantitat de tràfic donat un grau de servei objectiu, i diferents models de planificació de xarxa amb l'objectiu de maximitzar els ingressos previstos i el valor actual net de la xarxa. Després de resoldre aquests problemes per xarxes reals, concloem que la nostra proposta maximitza ambdós objectius. En tercer lloc, afrontem el disseny de xarxes multicapa robustes davant de fallida simple a la capa IP/MPLS i als enllaços de fibra. Per resoldre aquest problema eficientment, proposem un enfocament basat en sobre-dimensionar l'equipament de la capa IP/MPLS i recuperar la connectivitat i el comparem amb la solució convencional basada en duplicar la capa IP/MPLS. Després de comparar solucions mitjançant models ILP i heurístiques, concloem que la nostra solució permet obtenir un estalvi significatiu en termes de costos de desplegament. Com a quart objectiu, introduïm un mecanisme adaptatiu per reduir l'ús de ports opto-electrònics (O/E) en xarxes multicapa sota escenaris de tràfic dinàmic. Una formulació ILP i diverses heurístiques són desenvolupades per resoldre aquest problema, que permet reduir significativament l’ús de ports O/E en temps molt curts. Finalment, adrecem el problema de disseny resilient del pla de control GMPLS. Després de proposar un nou model analític per quantificar la resiliència en topologies mallades de pla de control, usem aquest model per proposar un problema de disseny de pla de control. Proposem un procediment iteratiu lineal i una heurística i els usem per resoldre instàncies reals, arribant a la conclusió que es pot reduir significativament la quantitat d'enllaços del pla de control sense afectar la qualitat de servei a la xarxa.The explosion of IP traffic due to the increase of IP-based multimedia services such as HDTV or video conferencing poses new challenges to network operators to provide a cost-effective data transmission. Although Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) meshed transport networks support high-speed optical connections, these networks lack the flexibility to support sub-wavelength traffic leading to poor bandwidth usage. To cope with the transport of that huge and heterogeneous amount of traffic, multilayer networks represent the most accepted architectural solution. Multilayer optical networks allow optimizing network capacity by means of packing several low-speed traffic streams into higher-speed optical connections (lightpaths). During this operation, a dynamic virtual topology is created and modified the whole time thanks to a control plane responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and release of connections. Because of this dynamicity, a suboptimal allocation of resources may exist at any time. In this context, a periodically resource reallocation could be deployed in the network, thus improving network resource utilization. This thesis is devoted to the characterization, planning, and re-optimization of next-generation multilayer networks from an integral perspective including physical layer, optical layer, virtual layer, and control plane optimization. To this aim, statistical models, mathematical programming models and meta-heuristics are developed. More specifically, this main objective has been attained by developing five goals covering different open issues. First, we provide a statistical methodology to improve the computation of the Q-factor for impairment-aware routing and wavelength assignment problems (IA-RWA). To this aim we propose two statistical models to compute the Cross-Phase Modulation variance (which represents the bottleneck in terms of computation time and complexity) in off-line and on-line IA-RWA problems, proving the accuracy of both models when computing Q-factor values in real traffic scenarios. Second and moving to the optical layer, we present a new wavelength partitioning scheme that allows maximizing the amount of extra traffic provided in shared path protected environments compared with current solutions. Specifically, we define several statistical models to estimate the traffic intensity given a target grade of service, and different network planning problems for maximizing the expected revenues and net present value. After solving these problems for real networks, we conclude that our proposed scheme maximizes both revenues and NPV. Third, we tackle the design of survivable multilayer networks against single failures at the IP/MPLS layer and WSON links. To efficiently solve this problem, we propose a new approach based on over-dimensioning IP/MPLS devices and lightpath connectivity and recovery and we compare it against the conventional solution based on duplicating backbone IP/MPLS nodes. After evaluating both approaches by means of ILP models and heuristic algorithms, we conclude that our proposed approach leads to significant CAPEX savings. Fourth, we introduce an adaptive mechanism to reduce the usage of opto-electronic (O/E) ports of IP/MPLS-over-WSON multilayer networks in dynamic scenarios. A ILP formulation and several heuristics are developed to solve this problem, which allows significantly reducing the usage of O/E ports in very short running times. Finally, we address the design of resilient control plane topologies in GMPLS-enabled transport networks. After proposing a novel analytical model to quantify the resilience in mesh control plane topologies, we use this model to propose a problem to design the control plane topology. An iterative model and a heuristic are proposed and used to solve real instances, concluding that a significant reduction in the number of control plane links can be performed without affecting the quality of service of the network
