    Extracting, managing, and exploiting the semantics of mechanical CAD models in assembly tasks

    The manufacturing of mechanical products is increasingly assisted by technologies that exploit the CAD model of the final assembly to address complex tasks in an automated and simplified way, to reduce development time and costs. However, it is proven that industrial CAD models are heterogeneous objects, involving different design conventions, providing geometric data on parts but often lacking explicit semantic information on their functionalities. As a consequence, existing approaches are mainly mathematics-based or need expert intervention to interpret assembly components, and this is limiting. The work presented in the thesis is placed in this context and aims at automatically extracting and leveraging in industrial applications high-level semantic information from B-rep models of mechanical products in standard format (e.g. STEP). This makes possible the development of promising knowledge intensive processes that take into account the engineering meaning of the parts and their relationships. The guiding idea is to define a rule-based approach that matches the shape features, the dimensional relations, and the mounting schemes strictly governing real mechanical assemblies with the geometric and topological properties that can be retrieved in CAD models of assemblies. More in practice, a standalone system is implemented which carries out two distinct operations, namely the data extraction and the data exploitation. The first involves all the steps necessary to process and analyze the geometric objects representing the parts of the assembly to infer their engineering meaning. It returns an enriched product model representation based on a new data structure, denoted as liaison, containing all the extracted information. The new product model representation, then, stands at the basis of the data exploitation phase, where assembly tasks, such as subassembly identification, assembly planning, and design for assembly, are addressed in a more effective way

    An assembly oriented design framework for product structure engineering and assembly sequence planning

    The paper describes a novel framework for an assembly-oriented design (AOD) approach as a new functional product lifecycle management (PLM) strategy, by considering product design and assembly sequence planning phases concurrently. Integration issues of product life cycle into the product development process have received much attention over the last two decades, especially at the detailed design stage. The main objective of the research is to define assembly sequence into preliminary design stages by introducing and applying assembly process knowledge in order to provide an assembly context knowledge to support life-oriented product development process, particularly for product structuring. The proposed framework highlights a novel algorithm based on a mathematical model integrating boundary conditions related to DFA rules, engineering decisions for assembly sequence and the product structure definition. This framework has been implemented in a new system called PEGASUS considered as an AOD module for a PLM system. A case study of applying the framework to a catalytic-converter and diesel particulate filter sub-system, belonging to an exhaust system from an industrial automotive supplier, is introduced to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed AOD methodology

    The essential controls and dynamics community needs for a large space structures is addressed by the basic Space Construction Experiments (SCE)/MAST configuration and enhanced configurations for follow-on flights. The SCE/MAST can be integrated on a single structures technology experiments platform (STEP). The experiment objectives can be accomplished without the need for EVA and it is anticipated that further design refinements will eliminate the requirement to use the remote manipulator system

    Development of fuels and structural materials for fast breeder reactors

    Fast breeder reactors (FBRs) are destined to play a crucial role in the Indian nuclear power programme in the foreseeable future. FBR technology involves a multi-disciplinary approach to solve the various challenges in the areas of fuel and materials development. Fuels for FBRs have significantly higher concentration of fissile material than in thermal reactors, with a matching increase in burn-up. The design of the fuel is an important aspect which has to be optimised for efficient, economic and safe production of power. FBR components operate under hostile and demanding environment of high neutron flux, liquid sodium coolant and elevated temperatures. Resistance to void swelling, irradiation creep, and irradiation embrittlement are therefore major considerations in the choice of materials for the core components. Structural and steam generator materials should have good resistance to creep, low cycle fatigue, creep-fatigue interaction and sodium corrosion. The development of carbide fuel and structural materials for the Fast Breeder Test Reactor at Kalpakkam was a great technological challenge. At the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), advanced research facilities have been established, and extensive studies have been carried out in the areas of fuel and materials development. This has laid the foundation for the design and development of a 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor. Highlights of some of these studies are discussed in this paper in the context of our mission to develop and deploy FBR technology for the energy security of India in the 21st century

    Computer-Aided Assembly Sequence Planning for High-Mix Low-Volume Products in the Electronic Appliances Industry

    Electronic appliance manufacturers are facing the challenge of frequent product orders. Based on each product order, the assembly process and workstations need to be planned. An essential part of the assembly planning is defining the assembly sequence, considering the mechanical product’s design, and handling of the product’s components. The assembly sequence determines the order of processes for each workstation, the overall layout, and thereby time and cost. Currently, the assembly sequence is decided by industrial engineers through a manual approach that is time-consuming, complex, and requires technical expertise. To reduce the industrial engineers’ manual effort, a Computer-Aided Assembly Sequence Planning (CAASP) system is proposed in this paper. It compromises the components for a comprehensive system that aims to be applied practically. The system uses Computer-Aided Design (CAD) files to derive Liaison and Interference Matrices that represent a mathematical relationship between parts. Subsequently, an adapted Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm generates an optimized assembly sequence based on these relationships. Through a web browser-based application, the user can upload files and interact with the system. The system is conceptualized and validated using the CAD file of an electric motor example product. The results are discussed, and future work is outlined
