An integrated Bayesian-Markovian framework for ascertaining cost of executing quality improvement programs in manufacturing industry

Purpose Typically, the budgetary requirements for executing a supplier’s process quality improvement program are often done in unstructured ways in that quality improvement managers purely use their previous experiences and pertinent historical information. In this backdrop, the purpose of this paper is to ascertain the expected cost of carrying out suppliers’ process quality improvement programs that are driven by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Design/methodology/approach Using inputs from experts who had prior experience executing suppliers’ quality improvement programs and employing the Bayesian theory, transition probabilities to various quality levels from an initial quality level are ascertained. Thereafter, the Markov chain concept enables the authors to determine steady-state probabilities. These steady-state probabilities in conjunction with quality level cost coefficients yield the expected cost of quality improvement programs. Findings The novel method devised in this research is a key contribution of the work. Furthermore, various implications related to experts’ inputs, dynamics related to Markov chain, etc., are discussed. The method is illustrated using a real life of automotive industry in India. Originality/value The research contributes to the extant literature in that a new method of determining the expected cost of quality improvement is proposed. Furthermore, the method would be of value to OEMs and suppliers wherein the quality levels at a given time are the function of quality levels in preceding period(s)

A fuzzy dynamic model for total quality cost

This paper presents a dynamic Quality Cost Model capable of reconciling contributions of Juran’s traditional Model with those of the Zero Defects Model. Here, the cost functions depend on a company’s level of conformance in each period and at which stage of the Maturity Grid a company is positioned. To determine the stage at which the company is positioned on Crosby’s Maturity Grid, expert’s opinions will be considered using fuzzy logic to incorporate Hidden Quality Costs in the failure costs calculated by the company. The model will introduce exponential regression (ER) using Induced Ordered Weighted Average (IOWA). The results show that the learning process present in the proposed model leads it to evolve over time to positions that bring to mind the Zero Defects model. However, as appreciated in the case study, it can also regress and introduce the organisation into a level of saturation where the Cost of Quality is optimised before reaching perfection

A multi-criteria performance study of lean engineering

The context of product development (PD) in the aerospace sector is one of intense competitive pressure. To ensure the continued competitiveness of this industrial sector in Canada, enhancing the productivity of PD is an urgent necessity. Key tenets of lean include value, flow and continuous improvement. In the PD context, arguments have been made that lean is not minimizing cost, cycle time or waste, but maximizing value. The research reported in this thesis supports the overarching lean goal of continuously improving the value of information flow in PD by reducing span time. While lean has been used with much success in the manufacturing world, there is an absence of comprehensive models measuring the benefits of lean improvements in PD. The first major contribution to address is the development of a lean engineering multi-criteria performance model. In addition to the lean concept of `one piece flow', notions of economic order and production quantity are used in manufacturing to address the objective of flow improvement, and the related objective of inventory management. Equivalent economic design quantity concepts to address inventory of intellectual work in progress are lacking in PD. Thus, the second contribution of this work is the development of both analytical and experimental models to help ascertain the existence of optimal PD job size. The final contribution of this thesis is the development of lean decision-making models to enable optimal allocation of PD resources, supporting the lean objective of improving the value of information flo
