    A Joint Replication-Migration-based Routing in Delay Tolerant Networks

    Abstract—Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) use mobility-assisted routing, where nodes carry, store, and forward data to each other in order to overcome the intermittent connectivity and limited network capacity of this type of network. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol that includes two mechanisms: message replication and message migration. Each mechanism has two steps: message selection and node selection. In message repli-cation, we choose the smallest hop-count message to replicate. The hop-count threshold is used to control the replication speed. We propose a metric called 2-hop activity level to measure the relay node’s transmission capacity, which is used in node selection. Our protocol includes a novel message migration policy that is used to overcome the limited buffer space and bandwidth of DTN nodes. We validate our protocol via extensive simulation experiments; we use a combination of synthetic and real mobility traces.     LSSTCS- A Social-Based DTN Routing in Cooperative Vehicular Sensor Networks

    As a cooperative information system, vehicles in Vehicular Sensor Networks delivery messages based on collaboration. Due to the high speed of vehicles, the topology of the network is highly dynamic, and the network may be disconnected frequently. So how to transfer large files in such network is worth considering. In case that the encountering nodes which never meet before flood messages blindly to cause tremendous network overhead. We address this challenge by introducing the Encounter Utility Rank Router(EURR) based on social metrics. EURR includes three cases: Utility Replication Strategy, Lifetime Replication Strategy and SocialRank Replication Strategy. The Lifetime Replication is promising complement to Utility Replication. It enhances the delivery ratio by relaying the copy via the remaining lifetime. Considering network overhead, the SocialRank Replication replicates a copy according to the SocialRank when two communicating nodes do not meet before. The routing mechanism explores the utility of history encounter information and social opportunistic forwarding. The results under the scenario show an advantage of the proposed Encounter Utility Rank Router (EURR) over the compared algorithms in terms of delivery ratio, average delivery latency and overhead ratio

    Information mobility: a new paradigm for wireless content dissemination

    Content distribution networks are nowadays becoming a mature technology. Nevertheless, content delivery research in ad hoc networks has dealt with overlay applications, information querying and data broadcasting techniques. The aim of this paper is to explore and discuss content delivery in wireless ad hoc networks and to state challenges and reference models for this kind of networks. The concept of Information Mobility is introduced to point out that the contents are being stored in mobile nodes and that the contents move and replicate before being accessed.     Delay Tolerant Networks for Efficient Information Harvesting and Distribution in Intelligent Transportation Systems

    [EN] Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can make transportation safer, more efficient, and more sustainable by applying various information and communication technologies. One of these technologies are \acfp{VN}. \acp{VN} combine different communication solutions such as cellular networks, \acfp{VANET}, or IEEE 802.11 technologies to provide connectivity among vehicles, and between vehicles and road infrastructure. This thesis focuses on VNs, and considers that the high speed of the nodes and the presence of obstacles like buildings, produces a highly variable network topology, as well as more frequent partitions in the network. Therefore, classical \ac{MANET} protocols do not adapt well to VANETs. Under these conditions, \ac{DTN} have been proposed as an alternative able to cope with these adverse characteristics. In DTN, when a message cannot be routed to its destination, it is not immediately dropped but it is instead stored and carried until a new route becomes available. The combination of VN and DTN is called \acp{VDTN}. In this thesis, we propose a new VDTN protocol designed to collect information from vehicular sensors. Our proposal, called \ac{MSDP}, combines information about the localization obtained from a GNSS system with the actual street/road layout obtained from a Navigation System (NS) to define a new routing metric. Both analytical and simulation results prove that MSDP outperforms previous proposals. Concerning the deployment of VNs and VANET technologies, technology already left behind the innovation and the standardization phases, and it is about time it reach the first early adopters in the market. However, most car manufacturers have decided to implement VN devices in the form of On Board Units (OBUs), which are expensive, heavily manufacturer dependent, and difficult to upgrade. These facts are delaying the deployment of VN. To boost this process, we have developed the GRCBox architecture. This architecture is based on low-cost devices and enables the establishment of V2X, \emph{i.e.} V2I and V2V, communications while integrating users by easing the use of general purpose devices like smartphones, tablets or laptops. To demonstrate the viability of the GRCBox architecture, we combined it with a DTN platform called Scampi to obtain actual results over a real VDTN scenario. We also present several GRCBox-aware applications that illustrate how developers can create applications that bring the potential of VN to user devices.[ES] Los sistemas de transporte inteligente (ITS) son el soporte para el establecimiento de un transporte más seguro, más eficiente y más sostenible mediante el uso de tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones. Una de estas tecnologías son las redes vehiculares (VNs). Las VNs combinan diferentes tecnologías de comunicación como las redes celulares, las redes ad-hoc vehiculares (VANETs) o las redes 802.11p para proporcionar conectividad entre vehículos, y entre vehículos y la infraestructura de carreteras. Esta tesis se centra en las VNs, en las cuales la alta velocidad de los nodos y la presencia de obstáculos como edificios producen una topología de red altamente variable, así como frecuentes particiones en la red. Debido a estas características, los protocolos para redes móviles ad-hoc (MANETs) no se adaptan bien a las VANETs. En estas condiciones, las redes tolerantes a retardos (DTNs) se han propuesto como una alternativa capaz de hacer frente a estos problemas. En DTN, cuando un mensaje no puede ser encaminado hacia su destino, no es inmediatamente descartado sino es almacenado hasta que una nueva ruta esta disponible. Cuando las VNs y las DTNs se combinan surgen las redes vehiculares tolerantes a retardos (VDTN). En esta tesis proponemos un nuevo protocolo para VDTNs diseñado para recolectar la información generada por sensores vehiculares. Nuestra propuesta, llamada MSDP, combina la información obtenida del servicio de información geográfica (GIS) con el mapa real de las calles obtenido del sistema de navegación (NS) para definir una nueva métrica de encaminamiento. Resultados analíticos y mediante simulaciones prueban que MSDP mejora el rendimiento de propuestas anteriores. En relación con el despliegue de las VNs y las tecnologías VANET, la tecnología ha dejado atrás las fases de innovación y estandarización, ahora es el momento de alcanzar a los primeros usuarios del mercado. Sin embargo, la mayoría de fabricantes han decidido implementar los dispositivos para VN como unidades de a bordo (OBU), las cuales son caras y difíciles de actualizar. Además, las OBUs son muy dependientes del fabricante original. Todo esto esta retrasando el despliegue de las VNs. Para acelerar la adopción de las VNs, hemos desarrollado la arquitectura GRCBox. La arquitectura GRCBox esta basada en un dispositivo de bajo coste que permite a los usuarios usar comunicaciones V2X (V2V y V2I) mientras utilizan dispositivos de propósito general como teléfonos inteligentes, tabletas o portátiles. Las pruebas incluidas en esta tesis demuestran la viabilidad de la arquitectura GRCBox. Mediante la combinación de nuestra GRCBox y una plataforma de DTN llamada Scampi hemos diseñado y probado un escenario VDTN real. Una d'aquestes tecnologies són les xarxes vehiculars (VN). Les VN combinen diferents tecnologies de comunicació, com ara les xarxes cel·lulars, les xarxes ad-hoc vehiculars (VANET) o les xarxes 802.11p, per a proporcionar comunicació entre vehicles, i entre vehicles i la infraestructura de carreteres. Aquesta tesi se centra en les VANET, en les quals l'alta velocitat dels nodes i la presència d'obstacles, com els edificis, produeixen una topologia de xarxa altament variable, i també freqüents particions en la xarxa. Per aquest motiu, els protocols per a xarxes mòbils ad-hoc (MANET) no s'adapten bé. En aquestes condicions, les xarxes tolerants a retards (DTN) s'han proposat com una alternativa capaç de fer front a aquests problemes. La nostra proposta, anomenada MSDP, combina la informació obtinguda del servei d'informació geogràfica (GIS) amb el mapa real dels carrers obtingut del sistema de navegació (NS) per a definir una nova mètrica d'encaminament. Resultats analítics i mitjançant simulacions proven que MSDP millora el rendiment de propostes prèvies. En relació amb el desplegament de les VN i les tecnologies VANET, la tecnologia ha deixat arrere les fases d'innovació i estandardització, ara és temps d'aconseguir als primers usuaris del mercat. No obstant això, la majoria de fabricants han decidit implementar els dispositius per a VN com a unitats de bord (OBU), les quals són cares i difícils d'actualitzar. A més, les OBU són molt dependents del fabricant original. Tot això està retardant el desplegament de les VN. Per a accelerar l'adopció de les VN, hem desenvolupat l'arquitectura GRCBox. L'arquitectura GRCBox està basada en un dispositiu de baix cost que permet als usuaris usar comunicacions V2V mentre usen dispositius de propòsit general, com ara telèfons intel·ligents, tauletes o portàtils. Les proves incloses en aquesta tesi demostren la viabilitat de l'arquitectura GRCBox. Mitjançant la combinació de la nostra GRCBox i la plataforma de DTN Scampi, hem dissenyat i provat un escenari VDTN pràctic.     End to End Reliability without Unicast Acknowledgements over Vehicular Networks

    The Future Cities Project (http://futurecities.up.pt/) has turned the city of Porto (Portugal) into an urban-scale living lab, where researchers, companies and startups can develop and test technologies, products and services. One of its largest infrastructures is the UrbanSense testbed, consisting of 25 environmental sensing units installed around the city, and another the BusNet, a vehicular ad-hoc network installed in over 400 STCP buses together with 55 Road Side Units (RSU), operated by the UP spin-off Veniam. The data gathered by UrbanSense is carried by BusNet to a storage facility. Because BusNet does not support unicast addressing, there i currently on means to provide end-to-end reliability to the communication, leading to data losses. The goal of this thesis is to explore possibilities to address this problem, designing an application level protocol that provides reliability to the data transfer without requiring unicast addressing. Instead, the protocol should leverage the knowledge about bus routes and geographic location of sensing nodes to target the delivery of the acknowledgements

    Novel Opportunistic Network Routing Based on Social Rank for Device-to-Device Communication

    In recent years, there has been dramatic proliferation of research concerned with fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication networks, among which device-to-device (D2D) communication is one of the key technologies. Due to the intermittent connection of nodes, the D2D network topology may be disconnected frequently, which will lead to failure in transmission of large data files. In opportunistic networks, in case of encountering nodes which never meet before a flood message blindly to cause tremendous network overhead, a novel opportunistic network routing protocol based on social rank and intermeeting time (SRIT) is proposed in this paper. An improved utility approach applied in utility replication based on encounter durations and intermeeting time is put forward to enhance the routing efficiency. Meanwhile, in order to select better candidate nodes in the network, a social graph among people is established when they socially relate to each other in social rank replication. The results under the scenario show an advantage of the proposed opportunistic network routing based on social rank and intermeeting time (SRIT) over the compared algorithms in terms of delivery ratio, average delivery latency, and overhead ratio

    Methodologies for the analysis of value from delay-tolerant inter-satellite networking

    In a world that is becoming increasingly connected, both in the sense of people and devices, it is of no surprise that users of the data enabled by satellites are exploring the potential brought about from a more connected Earth orbit environment. Lower data latency, higher revisit rates and higher volumes of information are the order of the day, and inter-connectivity is one of the ways in which this could be achieved. Within this dissertation, three main topics are investigated and built upon. First, the process of routing data through intermittently connected delay-tolerant networks is examined and a new routing protocol introduced, called Spae. The consideration of downstream resource limitations forms the heart of this novel approach which is shown to provide improvements in data routing that closely match that of a theoretically optimal scheme. Next, the value of inter-satellite networking is derived in such a way that removes the difficult task of costing the enabling inter-satellite link technology. Instead, value is defined as the price one should be willing to pay for the technology while retaining a mission value greater than its non-networking counterpart. This is achieved through the use of multi-attribute utility theory, trade-space analysis and system modelling, and demonstrated in two case studies. Finally, the effects of uncertainty in the form of sub-system failure are considered. Inter-satellite networking is shown to increase a system's resilience to failure through introduction of additional, partially failed states, made possible by data relay. The lifetime value of a system is then captured using a semi-analytical approach exploiting Markov chains, validated with a numerical Monte Carlo simulation approach.     A Distributed Caching System in DTNs

    Many popular services in the Internet are based on a client-server architecture. This is not an optimal model in some cases. Especially, where the server becomes difficult to reach due to link or path failures or traffic overloadings. This Master's thesis presents a design, implementation and evaluation of a distributed caching system for optimization of content retrieval in Delay-Tolerant Networks (DTNs). The presented solution proposes pushing the content closer to the requesting clients, by caching it in alternative locations on the path between client and server. In this case, the clients are able to retrieve the content with lower latency and fewer network resource consumption. The approach is motivated by the decreasing price of storage in caches. The first part of the thesis introduces the research problem on a general basis, and a literature overview is given to present the current research in the field of Web caching, proactive caching in Content Distribution Networks and caching in DTN environments. A design of the distributed caching system is then presented. Focus is to design a node that can participate in content caching. Theoretical approach is taken to motivate network topologies, routing protocols and distributions of the queries for simulations. The experimental part of the thesis discusses the results of the simulations performed to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed solution. As a result, the presented distributed caching system is shown to increase the overall retrieval performance, as well as reduce the latency for obtaining the responses. In particular, caching policies that aggressively cache items always give the best results, however, with increasing storage costs. Moreover, the distribution of the queried items has a major impact on retrieval performance
