Alliances with optimal relay selection
Paper presented at the 2007 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, Honolulu, HI.Alliances is a recently proposed cooperative random access
protocol for wireless networks. In this paper we modify the
original model to include user location information. We also
derive pair-wise error probability (PEP) under Rayleigh flat
fading channel and a power-law attenuation environment.
Based on the PEP analysis we propose an optimal relay
selection scheme, which achieves significant throughput gains as
compared to the random relay selection scheme in the original
alliances
Location-Quality-aware Policy Optimisation for Relay Selection in Mobile Networks
Relaying can improve the coverage and performance of wireless access
networks. In presence of a localisation system at the mobile nodes, the use of
such location estimates for relay node selection can be advantageous as such
information can be collected by access points in linear effort with respect to
number of mobile nodes (while the number of links grows quadratically).
However, the localisation error and the chosen update rate of location
information in conjunction with the mobility model affect the performance of
such location-based relay schemes; these parameters also need to be taken into
account in the design of optimal policies. This paper develops a Markov model
that can capture the joint impact of localisation errors and inaccuracies of
location information due to forwarding delays and mobility; the Markov model is
used to develop algorithms to determine optimal location-based relay policies
that take the aforementioned factors into account. The model is subsequently
used to analyse the impact of deployment parameter choices on the performance
of location-based relaying in WLAN scenarios with free-space propagation

Splitting Algorithms for Fast Relay Selection: Generalizations, Analysis, and a Unified View
Relay selection for cooperative communications promises significant
performance improvements, and is, therefore, attracting considerable attention.
While several criteria have been proposed for selecting one or more relays,
distributed mechanisms that perform the selection have received relatively less
attention. In this paper, we develop a novel, yet simple, asymptotic analysis
of a splitting-based multiple access selection algorithm to find the single
best relay. The analysis leads to simpler and alternate expressions for the
average number of slots required to find the best user. By introducing a new
`contention load' parameter, the analysis shows that the parameter settings
used in the existing literature can be improved upon. New and simple bounds are
also derived. Furthermore, we propose a new algorithm that addresses the
general problem of selecting the best relays, and analyze and
optimize it. Even for a large number of relays, the algorithm selects the best
two relays within 4.406 slots and the best three within 6.491 slots, on
average. We also propose a new and simple scheme for the practically relevant
case of discrete metrics. Altogether, our results develop a unifying
perspective about the general problem of distributed selection in cooperative

Sidelobe Control in Collaborative Beamforming via Node Selection
Collaborative beamforming (CB) is a power efficient method for data
communications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which aims at increasing the
transmission range in the network by radiating the power from a cluster of
sensor nodes in the directions of the intended base station(s) or access
point(s) (BSs/APs). The CB average beampattern expresses a deterministic
behavior and can be used for characterizing/controling the transmission at
intended direction(s), since the mainlobe of the CB beampattern is independent
on the particular random node locations. However, the CB for a cluster formed
by a limited number of collaborative nodes results in a sample beampattern with
sidelobes that severely depend on the particular node locations. High level
sidelobes can cause unacceptable interference when they occur at directions of
unintended BSs/APs. Therefore, sidelobe control in CB has a potential to
increase the network capacity and wireless channel availability by decreasing
the interference. Traditional sidelobe control techniques are proposed for
centralized antenna arrays and, therefore, are not suitable for WSNs. In this
paper, we show that distributed, scalable, and low-complexity sidelobe control
techniques suitable for CB in WSNs can be developed based on node selection
technique which make use of the randomness of the node locations. A node
selection algorithm with low-rate feedback is developed to search over
different node combinations. The performance of the proposed algorithm is
analyzed in terms of the average number of trials required to select the
collaborative nodes and the resulting interference. Our simulation results
approve the theoretical analysis and show that the interference is

Applications of Repeated Games in Wireless Networks: A Survey
A repeated game is an effective tool to model interactions and conflicts for
players aiming to achieve their objectives in a long-term basis. Contrary to
static noncooperative games that model an interaction among players in only one
period, in repeated games, interactions of players repeat for multiple periods;
and thus the players become aware of other players' past behaviors and their
future benefits, and will adapt their behavior accordingly. In wireless
networks, conflicts among wireless nodes can lead to selfish behaviors,
resulting in poor network performances and detrimental individual payoffs. In
this paper, we survey the applications of repeated games in different wireless
networks. The main goal is to demonstrate the use of repeated games to
encourage wireless nodes to cooperate, thereby improving network performances
and avoiding network disruption due to selfish behaviors. Furthermore, various
problems in wireless networks and variations of repeated game models together
with the corresponding solutions are discussed in this survey. Finally, we

Geographical Forwarding Methods in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks
Vehicular ad hoc networks are new and emerging technology and special class of mobile ad hoc networks that provide wireless communication between vehicles without any fixed infrastructure. Impact Assessment of Hypothesized Cyberattacks on Interconnected Bulk Power Systems
The first-ever Ukraine cyberattack on power grid has proven its devastation
by hacking into their critical cyber assets. With administrative privileges
accessing substation networks/local control centers, one intelligent way of
coordinated cyberattacks is to execute a series of disruptive switching
executions on multiple substations using compromised supervisory control and
data acquisition (SCADA) systems. These actions can cause significant impacts
to an interconnected power grid. Unlike the previous power blackouts, such
high-impact initiating events can aggravate operating conditions, initiating
instability that may lead to system-wide cascading failure. A systemic
evaluation of "nightmare" scenarios is highly desirable for asset owners to
manage and prioritize the maintenance and investment in protecting their
cyberinfrastructure. This survey paper is a conceptual expansion of real-time
monitoring, anomaly detection, impact analyses, and mitigation (RAIM) framework
that emphasizes on the resulting impacts, both on steady-state and dynamic
aspects of power system stability. Hypothetically, we associate the
combinatorial analyses of steady state on substations/components outages and
dynamics of the sequential switching orders as part of the permutation. The
expanded framework includes (1) critical/noncritical combination verification,
(2) cascade confirmation, and (3) combination re-evaluation. This paper ends
with a discussion of the open issues for metrics and future design pertaining
the impact quantification of cyber-related contingencies
OBPF: Opportunistic Beaconless Packet Forwarding Strategy for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
[EN] In a vehicular ad hoc network, the communication links are unsteady due to the rapidly changing topology, high mobility and traffic density in the urban environment. Most of the existing geographical routing protocols rely on the continuous transmission of beacon messages to update the neighbors' presence, leading to network congestion. Source-based approaches have been proven to be inefficient in the inherently unstable network. To this end, we propose an opportunistic beaconless packet forwarding approach based on a modified handshake mechanism for the urban vehicular environment. The protocol acts differently between intersections and at the intersection to find the next forwarder node toward the destination. The modified handshake mechanism contains link quality, forward progress and directional greedy metrics to determine the best relay node in the network. After designing the protocol, we compared its performance with existing routing protocols. Coalition Formation Game for Cooperative Content Delivery in Network Coding Assisted D2D Communications
Device-to-device (D2D) communications have shown a huge potential in cellular offloading and become a potential technology in 5G and beyond. In D2D networks, the requested contents by user devices (UDs) can be delivered via D2D links, thus offloading the content providers (CPs). In this work, we address the problem of minimizing the delay of delivering content in a decentralized and partially D2D connected network using network coding (NC) and cooperation among the UDs. The proposed optimization framework considers UDs’ acquired and missing contents, their limited coverage zones, NC, and content’s erasure probability. As such, the completion time for delivering all missing contents to all UDs is minimized. The problem is modeled as a coalition game with cooperative-players wherein the payoff function is derived so that increasing individual payoff results in the desired cooperative behavior. Given the intractability of the formulation, the coalition game is relaxed to a coalition formation game (CFG). A distributed coalition formation algorithm relying on merge-and-split rules is developed for solving the relaxed problem at each transmission.
