    5GNOW: Challenging the LTE Design Paradigms of Orthogonality and Synchronicity

    LTE and LTE-Advanced have been optimized to deliver high bandwidth pipes to wireless users. The transport mechanisms have been tailored to maximize single cell performance by enforcing strict synchronism and orthogonality within a single cell and within a single contiguous frequency band. Various emerging trends reveal major shortcomings of those design criteria: 1) The fraction of machine-type-communications (MTC) is growing fast. Transmissions of this kind are suffering from the bulky procedures necessary to ensure strict synchronism. 2) Collaborative schemes have been introduced to boost capacity and coverage (CoMP), and wireless networks are becoming more and more heterogeneous following the non-uniform distribution of users. Tremendous efforts must be spent to collect the gains and to manage such systems under the premise of strict synchronism and orthogonality. 3) The advent of the Digital Agenda and the introduction of carrier aggregation are forcing the transmission systems to deal with fragmented spectrum. 5GNOW is an European research project supported by the European Commission within FP7 ICT Call 8. It will question the design targets of LTE and LTE-Advanced having these shortcomings in mind and the obedience to strict synchronism and orthogonality will be challenged. It will develop new PHY and MAC layer concepts being better suited to meet the upcoming needs with respect to service variety and heterogeneous transmission setups. Wireless transmission networks following the outcomes of 5GNOW will be better suited to meet the manifoldness of services, device classes and transmission setups present in envisioned future scenarios like smart cities. The integration of systems relying heavily on MTC into the communication network will be eased. The per-user experience will be more uniform and satisfying.     Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) make use of advanced technologies to enhance road safety and improve traffic efficiency. It is anticipated that ITS will play a vital future role in improving traffic efficiency, safety, comfort and emissions. In order to assist the passengers to travel safely, efficiently and conveniently, several application requirements have to be met simultaneously. In addition to the delivery of regular traffic and safety information, vehicular networks have been recently required to support infotainment services. Previous vehicular network designs and architectures do not satisfy this increasing traffic demand as they are setup for either voice or data traffic, which is not suitable for the transfer of vehicular traffic. This new requirement is one of the key drivers behind the need for new mobile wireless broadband architectures and technologies. For this purpose, this thesis proposes and investigates a heterogeneous IEEE 802.11 and LTE vehicular system that supports both infotainment and ITS traffic control data. IEEE 802.11g is used for V2V communications and as an on-board access network while, LTE is used for V2I communications. A performance simulation-based study is conducted to validate the feasibility of the proposed system in an urban vehicular environment. The system performance is evaluated in terms of data loss, data rate, delay and jitter. Several simulation scenarios are performed and evaluated. In the V2I-only scenario, the delay, jitter and data drops for both ITS and video traffic are within the acceptable limits, as defined by vehicular application requirements. Although a tendency of increase in video packet drops during handover from one eNodeB to another is observed yet, the attainable data loss rate is still below the defined benchmarks. In the integrated V2V-V2I scenario, data loss in uplink ITS traffic was initially observed so, Burst communication technique is applied to prevent packet losses in the critical uplink ITS traffic. A quantitative analysis is performed to determine the number of packets per burst, the inter-packet and inter-burst intervals. It is found that a substantial improvement is achieved using a two-packet Burst, where no packets are lost in the uplink direction. The delay, jitter and data drops for both uplink and downlink ITS traffic, and video traffic are below the benchmarks of vehicular applications. Thus, the results indicate that the proposed heterogeneous system offers acceptable performance that meets the requirements of the different vehicular applications. All simulations are conducted on OPNET Network Modeler and results are subjected to a 95% confidence analysis

    Exploiting memory allocations in clusterized many-core architectures

    Power-efficient architectures have become the most important feature required for future embedded systems. Modern designs, like those released on mobile devices, reveal that clusterization is the way to improve energy efficiency. However, such architectures are still limited by the memory subsystem (i.e., memory latency problems). This work investigates an alternative approach that exploits on-chip data locality to a large extent, through distributed shared memory systems that permit efficient reuse of on-chip mapped data in clusterized many-core architectures. First, this work reviews the current literature on memory allocations and explore the limitations of cluster-based many-core architectures. Then, several memory allocations are introduced and benchmarked scalability, performance and energy-wise, compared to the conventional centralized shared memory solution to reveal which memory allocation is the most appropriate for future mobile architectures. Our results show that distributed shared memory allocations bring performance gains and opportunities to reduce energy consumption

    User-activity aware strategies for mobile information access

    Information access suffers tremendously in wireless networks because of the low correlation between content transferred across low-bandwidth wireless links and actual data used to serve user requests. As a result, conventional content access mechanisms face such problems as unnecessary bandwidth consumption and large response times, and users experience significant performance degradation. In this dissertation, we analyze the cause of those problems and find that the major reason for inefficient information access in wireless networks is the absence of any user-activity awareness in current mechanisms. To solve these problems, we propose three user-activity aware strategies for mobile information access. Multimedia information may include discrete media data, such as text, data, and images, and continuous media data, such as video and audio. Such a system enhances human communications by exploiting both visual and aural senses and provides the ultimate flexibility in work and entertainment, allowing one to collaborate with remote participants, view movies on demand, access on-line digital libraries from the desktop, and so forth. In this paper, we present a technical survey of a DMS. Students are increasingly seeking opportunities to gain experience with developing technologies that interest them personally, but may be beyond the planned curriculum. This paper explores an independent project of a student creating a supercomputer by using the parallel processing power of ten Raspberry pi. Traditionally computing is executed one instruction at a time, usually using a single processor. The speed in which instructions are completed depends on how fast data moves through the hardware. Parallel computing is a faster way to process instructions by breaking the large task into smaller tasks using a coordinated effort to process data simultaneously. Parallel computing is typically handled by supercomputers that range in costs from the hundreds of thousands to over a billion dollars

    Web pre-fetching schemes using Machine Learning for Mobile Cloud Computing

    Pre-fetching is one of the technologies used in reducing latency on network traffic on the Internet. We propose this technology to utilise Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) environment to handle latency issues in context of data management. However, overaggressive use of the pre-fetching technique causes overhead and slows down the system performance since pre-fetching the wrong objects data wastes the storage capacity of a mobile device. Many studies have been using Machine Learning (ML) to solve such issues. However, in MCC environment, the pre-fetching using ML is not widely used. Therefore, this research aims to implement ML techniques to classify the web objects that require decision rules. These decision rules are generated using few ML algorithms such as J48, Random Tree (RT), Naive Bayes (NB) and Rough Set (RS).These rules represent the characteristics of the input data accordingly. The experimental results reveal that J48 performs well in classifying the web objects for all three different datasets with testing accuracy of 95.49%, 98.28% and 97.9% for the UTM blog data, IRCache, and Proxy Cloud Computing (CC) datasets respectively. It shows that J48 algorithm is capable to handle better cloud data management with good recommendation to users with or without the cloud storage

    Evaluation, Analysis and adaptation of web prefetching techniques in current web

    Abstract This dissertation is focused on the study of the prefetching technique applied to the World Wide Web. This technique lies in processing (e.g., downloading) a Web request before the user actually makes it. By doing so, the waiting time perceived by the user can be reduced, which is the main goal of the Web prefetching techniques. The study of the state of the art about Web prefetching showed the heterogeneity that exists in its performance evaluation. This heterogeneity is mainly focused on four issues: i) there was no open framework to simulate and evaluate the already proposed prefetching techniques; ii) no uniform selection of the performance indexes to be maximized, or even their definition; iii) no comparative studies of prediction algorithms taking into account the costs and benefits of web prefetching at the same time; and iv) the evaluation of techniques under very different or few significant workloads. During the research work, we have contributed to homogenizing the evaluation of prefetching performance by developing an open simulation framework that reproduces in detail all the aspects that impact on prefetching performance. In addition, prefetching performance metrics have been analyzed in order to clarify their definition and detect the most meaningful from the user's point of view. We also proposed an evaluation methodology to consider the cost and the benefit of prefetching at the same time. Finally, the importance of using current workloads to evaluate prefetching techniques has been highlighted; otherwise wrong conclusions could be achieved. The potential benefits of each web prefetching architecture were analyzed, finding that collaborative predictors could reduce almost all the latency perceived by users. The first step to develop a collaborative predictor is to make predictions at the server, so this thesis is focused on an architecture with a server-located predictor.
