    Application of Image Analysis for the Identification of Prehistoric Ceramic Production Technologies in the North Caucasus (Russia, Bronze/Iron Age)

    The recent advances in microscopy and scanning techniques enabled the image analysis of archaeological objects in a high resolution. From the direct measurements in images, shapes and related parameters of the structural elements of interest can be derived. In this study, image analysis in 2D/3D is applied to archaeological ceramics, in order to obtain clues about the ceramic pastes, firing and shaping techniques. Images were acquired by the polarized light microscope, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D micro X-ray computed tomography (µ-CT) and segmented using Matlab. 70 ceramic sherds excavated at Ransyrt 1 (Middle-Late Bronze Age) and Kabardinka 2 (late Bronze–early Iron Age), located in in the North Caucasian mountains, Russia, were investigated. The size distribution, circularity and sphericity of sand grains in the ceramics show site specific difference as well as variations within a site. The sphericity, surface area, volume and Euler characteristic of pores show the existence of various pyrometamorphic states between the ceramics and within a ceramic. Using alignments of pores and grains, similar pottery shaping techniques are identified for both sites. These results show that the image analysis of archaeological ceramics can provide detailed information about the prehistoric ceramic production technologies with fast data availability

    Sketching space

    In this paper, we present a sketch modelling system which we call Stilton. The program resembles a desktop VRML browser, allowing a user to navigate a three-dimensional model in a perspective projection, or panoramic photographs, which the program maps onto the scene as a `floor' and `walls'. We place an imaginary two-dimensional drawing plane in front of the user, and any geometric information that user sketches onto this plane may be reconstructed to form solid objects through an optimization process. We show how the system can be used to reconstruct geometry from panoramic images, or to add new objects to an existing model. While panoramic imaging can greatly assist with some aspects of site familiarization and qualitative assessment of a site, without the addition of some foreground geometry they offer only limited utility in a design context. Therefore, we suggest that the system may be of use in `just-in-time' CAD recovery of complex environments, such as shop floors, or construction sites, by recovering objects through sketched overlays, where other methods such as automatic line-retrieval may be impossible. The result of using the system in this manner is the `sketching of space' - sketching out a volume around the user - and once the geometry has been recovered, the designer is free to quickly sketch design ideas into the newly constructed context, or analyze the space around them. Although end-user trials have not, as yet, been undertaken we believe that this implementation may afford a user-interface that is both accessible and robust, and that the rapid growth of pen-computing devices will further stimulate activity in this area

    Affine Registration of label maps in Label Space

    Two key aspects of coupled multi-object shape\ud analysis and atlas generation are the choice of representation\ud and subsequent registration methods used to align the sample\ud set. For example, a typical brain image can be labeled into\ud three structures: grey matter, white matter and cerebrospinal\ud fluid. Many manipulations such as interpolation, transformation,\ud smoothing, or registration need to be performed on these images\ud before they can be used in further analysis. Current techniques\ud for such analysis tend to trade off performance between the two\ud tasks, performing well for one task but developing problems when\ud used for the other.\ud This article proposes to use a representation that is both\ud flexible and well suited for both tasks. We propose to map object\ud labels to vertices of a regular simplex, e.g. the unit interval for\ud two labels, a triangle for three labels, a tetrahedron for four\ud labels, etc. This representation, which is routinely used in fuzzy\ud classification, is ideally suited for representing and registering\ud multiple shapes. On closer examination, this representation\ud reveals several desirable properties: algebraic operations may\ud be done directly, label uncertainty is expressed as a weighted\ud mixture of labels (probabilistic interpretation), interpolation is\ud unbiased toward any label or the background, and registration\ud may be performed directly.\ud We demonstrate these properties by using label space in a gradient\ud descent based registration scheme to obtain a probabilistic\ud atlas. While straightforward, this iterative method is very slow,\ud could get stuck in local minima, and depends heavily on the initial\ud conditions. To address these issues, two fast methods are proposed\ud which serve as coarse registration schemes following which the\ud iterative descent method can be used to refine the results. Further,\ud we derive an analytical formulation for direct computation of the\ud "group mean" from the parameters of pairwise registration of all\ud the images in the sample set. We show results on richly labeled\ud 2D and 3D data sets

    Factoring Shape, Pose, and Layout from the 2D Image of a 3D Scene

    The goal of this paper is to take a single 2D image of a scene and recover the 3D structure in terms of a small set of factors: a layout representing the enclosing surfaces as well as a set of objects represented in terms of shape and pose. We propose a convolutional neural network-based approach to predict this representation and benchmark it on a large dataset of indoor scenes. Our experiments evaluate a number of practical design questions, demonstrate that we can infer this representation, and quantitatively and qualitatively demonstrate its merits compared to alternate representations.Comment: Project url with code: https://shubhtuls.github.io/factored3
