Emerging Issues Of Enterprise Architecture In UK Universities

    Get PDF
“New paradigms have emerged in Information Systems discipline that leverages the value of Information Technology planning and management. Corporate governments adopt Enterprise Architecture (EA), as a strategy for aligning business goals and information systems strategy so IT resources may become effective. IT management and future investments are challenging for many institutions due to the devolved nature of the institution. IT resources need to be effectively coordinated. The UK HE sector is currently faced with such challenge. Higher educational institutions are adopting modern approaches in addressing fundamental changes that include constrained funds, and improving students and stakeholder demand. EA helps an organisation manage its IT resources by aligning the IT strategy with the business strategy, so that IT becomes a worthy investment. This study will determine the current approach towards EA and its interpretation as an IS planning practice in UK higher institutions. This paper reviews current literature and uses qualitative methods to analyse the data collected. Data used for this study include transcripts from interviews, data from workshops cum focus groups, and reports from five institutions in the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), funded pilot study. The results from this qualitative analysis show that EA represents a new IT management innovation in the HE sector that would help senior management decision making, help departments share reusable resources and ensure IS departments become more successful by looking at how IS impacts on an organisation\u27s strategy. The paper concludes with identification of key issues emerging in the adoption of this approach in the context.

Utilization of information systems or technology in an organization is needed to improve organizational efficiency. This relates to the rapid development of information systems or technology that affect the ongoing business processes. The effectiveness is in the form of aligning business strategy with information system strategy and business transformation. However, the dilemma faced especially in Government agencies such as the Balikpapan City Department of Transportation is how to align business strategies and information systems strategies that will be used so as to achieve organizational goals.  Responding to the problem, it is necessary to align between the business needs of the organization and the needs of the application to support the vision and mission to be achieved by the Balikpapan City Department of Transportation. This can be achieved by using the framework of The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) which provides a detailed method of how to build, manage and implement an enterprise architecture known as the Architecture Development Method (ADM), hereafter referred to as TOGAF ADM. This research produces a mapping of business needs and application needs to support the vision and mission to be achieved through the information systems or technology architecture design including business architecture modeling, information system architecture, and technology architecture on the Balikpapan City Department of Transportation

In an increasingly connected and digital world, information is seen as a business enabler and source of sustained competitive advantage. Thus, information security is becoming critical to protect these information assets, which is why organizations’ information security strategy has been aligning with their strategic goals. This paper aims to study organizations’ general information security environment, analyse the CISO’s role in them and understand where they should be positioned on the organizational structure. Interviews were conducted on experienced information security consultants, information systems and information security directors, which allowed to conclude that organizations in Portugal still need to increase their maturity when it comes to information security, and that this may be due to the absence of an established security culture in the country. On the other hand, the CISO’s role has been increasing in relevance, being considered that it should have a close and independent relationship with organizations’ boards

Corporate governance has received a lot of attention over the last few years. Major factors contributing to this are a number of major corporate fraud cases and the introduction of new regulations, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002 for American companies and the King II report for South Africa. The attention to corporate governance also leads to attention to information technology (IT) governance because IT plays a vital role in supporting business processes. Information technology governance is a subset discipline of corporate governance, focusing on information and technology and its performance and risk management. Information technology governance is essential to ensure that the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) gets expected return on investment. Information technology (IT) governance is all about the implementation of processes, structures and mechanisms that enable business to realise value from IT investment. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of IT governance in NRCS. The researcher’s aim was: to examine the effectiveness of IT controls implemented on the NRCS IT systems; the enforcement of IT policies; the alignment of the IT department with business; and accountability of IT management. This study was conducted using a qualitative research design – specifically case study as a research method. A case study allowed the researcher to gather information through interview questions and observation of the target population, which comprises NRCS management, IT personnel and systems. To conclude the study, the researcher has identified factors prohibiting the NRCS IT department to enforce and implement IT governance for NRCS to realise return on investment they made on IT infrastructure. The inferences may be drawn that effectiveness of IT governance can be achieved by training management and IT personnel in IT governance, using approved IT policies and aligning IT strategy with a business strategy. &nbsp

The business world’s current markets are characterized by higher levels of competition, forcing organizations to adopt IT solutions that can provide them with a competitive advantage. Thus, they continuously search for approaches that can facilitate the development and maintenance of their Information Systems. To accomplish that, modern organizations increasingly focus on their business processes, as these are considered a main factor for their success. Organizations use a set of approaches to ensure greater control, flexibility and ability to manage their business, while aligning their processes with the organizational strategy. Among these, the hybrid process modeling approach, which combines the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) and Decision Model and Notation (DMN) to model business processes, is gaining momentum. This approach helps to define organizational processes in a more efficient, structured and realistic way, while making them much simpler. In this paper, we begin to explore the combination of the recent CMMN and DMN proposals with the widely used BPMN language, trying to understand the benefits that the integration of these three notations bring to the modeling of business processes.FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia(UID/CEC/00319/2013
