Voice Command Controller
Signal processing technology has been strongly developed and it has attracted interest from scientists and engineers around the world from the last decade. Speech synthesis and speech recognition are particular topic in the field that have been widely used and developed in many different area such as business, controlling, education and entertainment. The project\u27s main objective is to study and develop an application program with the Speech SDK through design and implementation of Tele-Control system based on the commercial product of National Semiconductor: Carrier-Current Transceiver (LM 1893) and Speech development kit (Speech SDK4.0) from Microsoft Corporation. The project is suitable to be used in restricted areas where space, wiring, decoration and signal interference are issues of concerned. Speech SDK is an interesting and useful tool in helping develop a Voice application programs. In this project, the user can use voice command interact with the control program to control a remote device. In conjunction with hardware modification, extra function can be added to the program such as controlling camera, video capture and position control buttons on the environment map, the project will be suitable for security purposes
Next-generation optical access networks based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a robust modulation and multiplexing format which is at the base of many present communication standards.
The interest of the OFDM application in optical fiber deployments is quite recent. As the next generation of Passive Optical Networks (NG-PONs) is envisioned, targeting greater capacity and user counts, the limitations of TDMA (Time Division Multiplexing Access) approaches to meet the expected increase in requirements becomes evident and therefore new technologies are being explored. Optical OFDMA is an emerging technology which can be a promising candidate.
The main goal of this Master Thesis is to study the problem of users multiplexing in access networks, using OFDM as a technology to transmit the user information data. This work has focused in the uplink study of the network, because it is the most challenging part of the network to design.
The studies have been conducted both in a theoretical way and also by simulating the targeted environments by means of a fiber optics transmission simulation tool. Virtual Photonics Integrated (VPI) is the software selected for the simulations. This tool is specially designed to simulate optical transmission system environments.

3D spatio-temporal analysis for compressive sensing in magnetic resonance imaging of the murine cardiac cycle
This thesis consists of two major contributions, each of which has been prepared in a conference paper. These papers will be submitted for publication in the SPIE 2013 Medical Imaging Conference and the ASEE 2013 Annual Conference.
The first paper explores a three-dimensional compressive sensing (CS) technique for reducing measurement time in MR imaging of the murine (mouse) cardiac cycle. By randomly undersampling a single 2D slice of a mouse heart at regular time intervals as it expands and contracts through the stages of a heartbeat, a CS reconstruction algorithm can be made to exploit transform sparsity in time as well as space. For the purposes of measuring the left ventricular volume in the mouse heart, this 3D approach offers significant advantages against classical 2D spatial compressive sensing.
The second paper describes the modification and testing of a set of laboratory exercises for developing an undergraduate level understanding of Simulink. An existing partial set of lab exercises for Simulink was obtained and improved considerably in pedagogical utility, and then the completed set of pilot exercises was taught as a part of a communications course at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in order to gauge student responses and learning experiences. In this paper, the content of the laboratory exercises with corresponding educational approaches are discussed, along with student feedback and future improvements. --Abstract, page iv
A FPGA/DSP design for real-time fracture detection using low transient pulse
This work presents the hardware and software architecture for the detection of fractures and edges in materials. While the detection method is based on the novel concept of Low Transient Pulse (LTP), the overall system implementation is based on two digital microelectronics technologies widely used for signal processing: Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Under the proposed architecture, the DSP carries out the analysis of the received baseband signal at a lower rate and hence can be used for large number of signal channels. The FPGA\u27s master clock runs at a higher frequency (62.5MHz) for the generation of LTP signal and to demodulate the passband ultrasonic signals sampled at 1MHz which interrupts the DSP at every 1 [Is. This research elaborates on designing a Quadrature Amplitude Modulator - demodulator (QAM) on the FPGA for the received signal from the ultrasound and edge detection on the DSP processor to detect the presence of edges/fractures on a test Sawbone plate. In this work, the LTP technology is applied to determine the location of the Sawbone plate edges based on the reflected signals to the receivers. This signal is then passed through a QAM to get the maxima (peaks) at the received signal to study the parameters in the DSP. This work successfully demonstrates the feasibility of modular programming approach across the two platforms. The dual time scale platform readily accommodates higher temporal resolution needed for the generation of Low Transient Pulses and the processing of real time baseband signals on the DSP for various test conditions

A novel readout method for focal plane array imaging in the presence of large dark current
This research was an investigation of a novel readout method for focal plane array (FPA) optical imaging, especially for very sensitive detectors with large dark current. The readout method is based on periodically blocking the optical input enabling the removal of the dark current integration from the output. The research demonstrated that it is feasible to modulate the optical input with the designed readout circuit and thus achieve longer signal integration time to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio.
Study of a proposed circuit model showed that in theory the correlated readout method could increase the output voltage swing and reduce the noise level by attenuating low frequency noise, thereby effectively improving the FPA dynamic range. Circuits based on standard CMOS circuitry were designed, simulated by PSpice, fabricated using Orbit 2µm n-well technology, and tested with a PI-4000 system. In the circuit evaluation, the output noise due to the clock switching phenomena, the gate signal feedthrough and the charge relaxation, was considered to be the critical problem. The most promising design for minimizing this problem had a CMOS current steering circuit at the input of a high CMRR operational amplifier. Simulation and test results showed that a modified capacitive transimpedance amplifier (CTIA) could subtract dark current output and reduce the output signal due to any difference between the frequencies of the optical input modulation signal and the switch modulation signal. In conclusion, the correlated readout circuit was shown to be a promising approach for advancing FPA technology

Programming a remote controllable real-time FM audio synthesizer in Rust
