    Temporal specification and deductive verification of a distributed component model and its environment

    In this paper we investigate the formalisation of distributed and long-running stateful systems using our normative temporal specification framework. We analyse aspects of a component-oriented Grid system, and the benefits of having a logic-based tool to perform automated and safe dynamic reconfiguration of its components. We describe which parts of this Grid system are involved in the reconfiguration process and detail the translation procedure into a state-based formal specification. Subsequently, we apply deductive verification to test whether dynamic reconfiguration can be performed. Finally, we analyse the procedure required to update our model for reconfiguration and justify the validity and the advantages of our methodology

    The research is directed towards the design and implementation of a comprehensive deductive environment for the development of high-assurance systems, especially reactive (concurrent, real-time, and hybrid) systems. Reactive systems maintain an ongoing interaction with their environment, and are among the most difficult to design and verify. The project aims to provide engineers with a wide variety of tools within a single, general, formal framework in which the tools will be most effective. The entire development process is considered, including the construction, transformation, validation, verification, debugging, and maintenance of computer systems. The goal is to automate the process as much as possible and reduce the errors that pervade hardware and software development

    Preface This volume contains the proceedings of ARW 2019, the twenty sixths Workshop on Automated Rea- soning (2nd{3d September 2019) hosted by the Department of Computer Science, Middlesex University, England (UK). Traditionally, this annual workshop which brings together, for a two-day intensive pro- gramme, researchers from different areas of automated reasoning, covers both traditional and emerging topics, disseminates achieved results or work in progress. During informal discussions at workshop ses- sions, the attendees, whether they are established in the Automated Reasoning community or are only at their early stages of their research career, gain invaluable feedback from colleagues. ARW always looks at the ways of strengthening links between academia, industry and government; between theoretical and practical advances. The 26th ARW is affiliated with TABLEAUX 2019 conference. These proceedings contain forteen extended abstracts contributed by the participants of the workshop and assembled in order of their presentations at the workshop. The abstracts cover a wide range of topics including the development of reasoning techniques for Agents, Model-Checking, Proof Search for classical and non-classical logics, Description Logics, development of Intelligent Prediction Models, application of Machine Learning to theorem proving, applications of AR in Cloud Computing and Networking. I would like to thank the members of the ARW Organising Committee for their advice and assis- tance.     Application of expert systems in project management decision aiding

    The feasibility of developing an expert systems-based project management decision aid to enhance the performance of NASA project managers was assessed. The research effort included extensive literature reviews in the areas of project management, project management decision aiding, expert systems technology, and human-computer interface engineering. Literature reviews were augmented by focused interviews with NASA managers. Time estimation for project scheduling was identified as the target activity for decision augmentation, and a design was developed for an Integrated NASA System for Intelligent Time Estimation (INSITE). The proposed INSITE design was judged feasible with a low level of risk. A partial proof-of-concept experiment was performed and was successful. Specific conclusions drawn from the research and analyses are included. The INSITE concept is potentially applicable in any management sphere, commercial or government, where time estimation is required for project scheduling. As project scheduling is a nearly universal management activity, the range of possibilities is considerable. The INSITE concept also holds potential for enhancing other management tasks, especially in areas such as cost estimation, where estimation-by-analogy is already a proven method

    The science of brute force

    We discuss recent advances in the science of brute-force. Very hard problems can now be solved by adding "brute reasoning" to the brute-force method, in the form of SAT solving (satisfiability solving). A key example is the recent solution of the boolean Pythagorean triples problem, which comes from the mathematical domain. The proof produced here, the largest proof ever constructed (200 TB), had a strong media echo, and scepticism about its "meaning" (or absence thereof) has been raised. We show, that these methods and extracted proofs have indeed meaning, and are indeed useful, when taking the real-world applications into account, the domain of safety and verification
