    Survey of Inter-satellite Communication for Small Satellite Systems: Physical Layer to Network Layer View

    Small satellite systems enable whole new class of missions for navigation, communications, remote sensing and scientific research for both civilian and military purposes. As individual spacecraft are limited by the size, mass and power constraints, mass-produced small satellites in large constellations or clusters could be useful in many science missions such as gravity mapping, tracking of forest fires, finding water resources, etc. Constellation of satellites provide improved spatial and temporal resolution of the target. Small satellite constellations contribute innovative applications by replacing a single asset with several very capable spacecraft which opens the door to new applications. With increasing levels of autonomy, there will be a need for remote communication networks to enable communication between spacecraft. These space based networks will need to configure and maintain dynamic routes, manage intermediate nodes, and reconfigure themselves to achieve mission objectives. Hence, inter-satellite communication is a key aspect when satellites fly in formation. In this paper, we present the various researches being conducted in the small satellite community for implementing inter-satellite communications based on the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model. This paper also reviews the various design parameters applicable to the first three layers of the OSI model, i.e., physical, data link and network layer. Based on the survey, we also present a comprehensive list of design parameters useful for achieving inter-satellite communications for multiple small satellite missions. Specific topics include proposed solutions for some of the challenges faced by small satellite systems, enabling operations using a network of small satellites, and some examples of small satellite missions involving formation flying aspects.Comment: 51 pages, 21 Figures, 11 Tables, accepted in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial

    Vehicle-Life Interaction in Fog-Enabled Smart Connected and Autonomous Vehicles

    Traffic accidents have become a major issue for researchers, academia, government and vehicle manufacturers over the last few years. Many accidents and emergency situations frequently occur on the road. Unfortunately, accidents lead to health injuries, destruction of some infrastructure, bad traffic flow, and more importantly these events cause deaths of hundreds of thousands of people due to not getting treatment in time. Thus, we need to develop an efficient and smart emergency system to ensure the timely arrival of an ambulance service to the place of the accident in order to provide timely medical help to those injured. In addition, we also need to communicate promptly with other entities such as hospitals so that they can make appropriate arrangements and provide timely medical information to emergency personnel on the scene including alerting those related to the injured person(s). In this paper, we have developed an intelligent protocol that uses connected and autonomous vehicles\u27 scenarios in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) so that prompt emergency services can be provided to reduce the death rate caused. The proposed protocol smartly connects with all the relevant entitles during the emergency while maintaining a smooth traffic flow for the arrival of the ambulance service. Moreover, our protocol also mitigates the broadcasting of messages circulating over the network for delay sensitive tasks. The evaluation results, based on the performance metrics such as channel collision, average packet delay, packet loss, and routing-overhead demonstrate that our proposed protocol outperforms previously proposed protocols such as Emergency Message Dissemination for Vehicular (EMDV), Contention Based Broadcasting (CBB), and Particle Swarm Optimization Contention-based Broadcast (PCBB) protocols. Finally, we discuss several issues and challenges that need to be addressed in the network in order to achieve more a reliable, efficient, connected, and autonomous vehicular network

    From MANET to people-centric networking: Milestones and open research challenges

    In this paper, we discuss the state of the art of (mobile) multi-hop ad hoc networking with the aim to present the current status of the research activities and identify the consolidated research areas, with limited research opportunities, and the hot and emerging research areas for which further research is required. We start by briefly discussing the MANET paradigm, and why the research on MANET protocols is now a cold research topic. Then we analyze the active research areas. Specifically, after discussing the wireless-network technologies, we analyze four successful ad hoc networking paradigms, mesh networks, opportunistic networks, vehicular networks, and sensor networks that emerged from the MANET world. We also present an emerging research direction in the multi-hop ad hoc networking field: people centric networking, triggered by the increasing penetration of the smartphones in everyday life, which is generating a people-centric revolution in computing and communications

    Exploring Link Correlation for Performance Improvements in Wireless Networks

Advisor: Tian He. 1 computer file (PDF); x, 96 pages.In wireless communication, many technologies, such as Wi-Fi, BlueTooth and ZigBee, operate in the same ISM band. With the exponential growth of wireless devices, the ISM band becomes more and more crowded. These wireless devices compete with each other to access spectrum resources, generating cross-technology interference (CTI). Since cross-technology interference may destroy wireless communication, the field is facing an urgent and challenging need to investigate the packet reception quality of wireless links under CTI. In this dissertation, we propose an in-depth systematic study from empirical measurement, theoretical analysis, modeling, to design and implementation of protocols that exploit packet reception patterns of wireless links under cross-technology interference. Based on extensive measurements, we exploit link correlation phenomenon that packet receptions from a transmitter to multiple receivers are correlated. We then propose link correlation model which contradicts the widely made link independent assumption. The proposed model has a broad impact on network designs that utilize concurrent wireless links, which include (i) traditional network protocols such as broadcast, and (ii) diversity-based protocols such as network coding and opportunistic routing. In the study of the impact of link correlation model on traditional network protocols, we present the design and implementation of CorLayer, a general supporting layer for energy efficient reliable broadcast that carefully blacklists certain poorly correlated wireless links. We integrate CorLayer transparently with sixteen state-of-the-art broadcast protocols specified in thirteen publications on three physical testbeds running TelosB, MICAz, and GreenOrbs nodes, respectively. The experimental results show that CorLayer remarkably improves energy efficiency across a wide spectrum of broadcast protocols and that the total number of packet transmissions can be reduced consistently by 47% on average. In the study of the impact of link correlation model on diversity-based protocols, we propose link correlation aware network coding and link correlation aware opportunistic routing. In link correlation aware network coding, we introduce Correlated Coding which seeks to optimize the transmission efficiency by maximizing necessary coding opportunities. In link correlation aware opportunistic routing, we propose a novel candidate forwarder selection algorithm to help opportunistic routing fully exploit the diversity benefit of the wireless broadcast medium. Testbed evaluation and extensive simulation show that the traditional network coding and opportunistic routing protocols’ transmission efficiency is significantly improved with our link correlation model

    Defense and traceback mechanisms in opportunistic wireless networks

     In this thesis, we have identified a novel attack in OppNets, a special type of packet dropping attack where the malicious node(s) drops one or more packets (not all the packets) and then injects new fake packets instead. We name this novel attack as the Catabolism attack and propose a novel attack detection and traceback approach against this attack referred to as the Anabolism defence. As part of the Anabolism defence approach we have proposed three techniques: time-based, Merkle tree based and Hash chain based techniques for attack detection and malicious node(s) traceback. We provide mathematical models that show our novel detection and traceback mechanisms to be very effective and detailed simulation results show our defence mechanisms to achieve a very high accuracy and detection rate

    On modeling and mitigating new breed of dos attacks

    Denial of Service (DoS) attacks pose serious threats to the Internet, exerting in tremendous impact on our daily lives that are heavily dependent on the good health of the Internet. This dissertation aims to achieve two objectives:1) to model new possibilities of the low rate DoS attacks; 2) to develop effective mitigation mechanisms to counter the threat from low rate DoS attacks. A new stealthy DDoS attack model referred to as the quiet attack is proposed in this dissertation. The attack traffic consists of TCP traffic only. Widely used botnets in today\u27s various attacks and newly introduced network feedback control are integral part of the quiet attack model. The quiet attack shows that short-lived TCP flows used as attack flows can be intentionally misused. This dissertation proposes another attack model referred to as the perfect storm which uses a combination of UDP and TCP. Better CAPTCHAs are highlighted as current defense against botnets to mitigate the quiet attack and the perfect storm. A novel time domain technique is proposed that relies on the time difference between subsequent packets of each flow to detect periodicity of the low rate DoS attack flow. An attacker can easily use different IP address spoofing techniques or botnets to launch a low rate DoS attack and fool the detection system. To mitigate such a threat, this dissertation proposes a second detection algorithm that detects the sudden increase in the traffic load of all the expired flows within a short period. In a network rate DoS attacks, it is shown that the traffic load of all the expired flows is less than certain thresholds, which are derived from real Internet traffic analysis. A novel filtering scheme is proposed to drop the low rate DoS attack packets. The simulation results confirm attack mitigation by using proposed technique.     Challenges and Solutions for Location-based Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks with Complex Network Topology

    Complex Network Topologies (CNTs)–network holes and cuts–often occur in practical WSN deployments. Many researchers have acknowledged that CNTs adversely affect the performance of location-based routing and proposed various CNT- aware location-based routing protocols. However, although they aim to address practical issues caused by CNTs, many proposed protocols are either based on idealistic assumptions, require too much resources, or have poor performance. Additionally, proposed protocols are designed only for a single routing primitive–either unicast, multicast, or convergecast. However, as recent WSN applications require diverse traffic patterns, the need for an unified routing framework has ever increased. In this dissertation, we address these main weaknesses in the research on location- based routing. We first propose efficient algorithms for detecting and abstracting CNTs in the network. Using these algorithms, we present our CNT-aware location- based unicast routing protocol that achieves the guaranteed small path stretch with significantly reduced communication overhead. We then present our location-based multicast routing protocol that finds near optimal routing paths from a source node to multicast member nodes, with efficient mechanisms for controllable packet header size and energy-efficient recovery from packet losses. Our CNT-aware convergecast routing protocol improves the network lifetime by identifying network regions with concentrated network traffic and distributing the traffic by using the novel concept of virtual boundaries. Finally, we present the design and implementation details of our unified routing framework that seamlessly integrates proposed unicast, multicast, and convergecast routing protocols. Specifically, we discuss the issues regarding the implementation of our routing protocols on real hardware, and the design of the framework that significantly reduces the code and memory size to fit in a resource constrained sensor mote. We conclude with a proactive solution designed to cope with CNTs, where mobile nodes are used for “patching” CNTs to restore the network connectivity and to optimize the network performance

    A framework for traffic flow survivability in wireless networks prone to multiple failures and attacks

    Transmitting packets over a wireless network has always been challenging due to failures that have always occurred as a result of many types of wireless connectivity issues. These failures have caused significant outages, and the delayed discovery and diagnostic testing of these failures have exacerbated their impact on servicing, economic damage, and social elements such as technological trust. There has been research on wireless network failures, but little on multiple failures such as node-node, node-link, and link–link failures. The problem of capacity efficiency and fast recovery from multiple failures has also not received attention. This research develops a capacity efficient evolutionary swarm survivability framework, which encompasses enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA) and ant colony system (ACS) survivability models to swiftly resolve node-node, node-link, and link-link failures for improved service quality. The capacity efficient models were tested on such failures at different locations on both small and large wireless networks. The proposed models were able to generate optimal alternative paths, the bandwidth required for fast rerouting, minimized transmission delay, and ensured the rerouting path fitness and good transmission time for rerouting voice, video and multimedia messages. Increasing multiple link failures reveal that as failure increases, the bandwidth used for rerouting and transmission time also increases. This implies that, failure increases bandwidth usage which leads to transmission delay, which in turn slows down message rerouting. The suggested framework performs better than the popular Dijkstra algorithm, proactive, adaptive and reactive models, in terms of throughput, packet delivery ratio (PDR), speed of transmission, transmission delay and running time. According to the simulation results, the capacity efficient ACS has a PDR of 0.89, the Dijkstra model has a PDR of 0.86, the reactive model has a PDR of 0.83, the proactive model has a PDR of 0.83, and the adaptive model has a PDR of 0.81. Another performance evaluation was performed to compare the proposed model's running time to that of other evaluated routing models. The capacity efficient ACS model has a running time of 169.89ms on average, while the adaptive model has a running time of 1837ms and Dijkstra has a running time of 280.62ms. With these results, capacity efficient ACS outperforms other evaluated routing algorithms in terms of PDR and running time. According to the mean throughput determined to evaluate the performance of the following routing algorithms: capacity efficient EGA has a mean throughput of 621.6, Dijkstra has a mean throughput of 619.3, proactive (DSDV) has a mean throughput of 555.9, and reactive (AODV) has a mean throughput of 501.0. Since Dijkstra is more similar to proposed models in terms of performance, capacity efficient EGA was compared to Dijkstra as follows: Dijkstra has a running time of 3.8908ms and EGA has a running time of 3.6968ms. In terms of running time and mean throughput, the capacity efficient EGA also outperforms the other evaluated routing algorithms. The generated alternative paths from these investigations demonstrate that the proposed framework works well in preventing the problem of data loss in transit and ameliorating congestion issue resulting from multiple failures and server overload which manifests when the process hangs.
