Effects of municipal smoke-free ordinances on secondhand smoke exposure in the Republic of Korea
ObjectiveTo reduce premature deaths due to secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure among non-smokers, the Republic of Korea (ROK) adopted changes to the National Health Promotion Act, which allowed local governments to enact municipal ordinances to strengthen their authority to designate smoke-free areas and levy penalty fines. In this study, we examined national trends in SHS exposure after the introduction of these municipal ordinances at the city level in 2010.MethodsWe used interrupted time series analysis to assess whether the trends of SHS exposure in the workplace and at home, and the primary cigarette smoking rate changed following the policy adjustment in the national legislation in ROK. Population-standardized data for selected variables were retrieved from a nationally representative survey dataset and used to study the policy action’s effectiveness.ResultsFollowing the change in the legislation, SHS exposure in the workplace reversed course from an increasing (18% per year) trend prior to the introduction of these smoke-free ordinances to a decreasing (−10% per year) trend after adoption and enforcement of these laws (β2 = 0.18, p-value = 0.07; β3 = −0.10, p-value = 0.02). SHS exposure at home (β2 = 0.10, p-value = 0.09; β3 = −0.03, p-value = 0.14) and the primary cigarette smoking rate (β2 = 0.03, p-value = 0.10; β3 = 0.008, p-value = 0.15) showed no significant changes in the sampled period. Although analyses stratified by sex showed that the allowance of municipal ordinances resulted in reduced SHS exposure in the workplace for both males and females, they did not affect the primary cigarette smoking rate as much, especially among females.ConclusionStrengthening the role of local governments by giving them the authority to enact and enforce penalties on SHS exposure violation helped ROK to reduce SHS exposure in the workplace. However, smoking behaviors and related activities seemed to shift to less restrictive areas such as on the streets and in apartment hallways, negating some of the effects due to these ordinances. Future studies should investigate how smoke-free policies beyond public places can further reduce the SHS exposure in ROK
Stem Cells in Domestic Animals
Stem cells are an attractive tool for cell-based therapies in regenerative medicine, both for humans and animals. The research and review articles published in this first book of the Collection “Stem Cells in Domestic Animals: Applications in Health and Production” are excellent examples of the recent advances made in the field of stem/stromal cell research in veterinary medicine. In this field, sophisticated and new treatments are now required for improving patients’ quality of life; in livestock animals, the goal of regenerative medicine is to improve not only animal welfare but also the quality of production, aiming to preserve human health. The contributions collected in this book concern both laboratory research and clinical applications of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells. The increasing knowledge of cell-based therapies may constitute an opportunity for researchers, veterinary practitioners, and animal owners to contribute to animal and human health and well-being

Taking shape: The data science of elastic shape analysis with practical applications
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University London.A mathematical curve can represent many different objects, both physical and abstract,
from the outline curve of an artefact in an image to the weight of growing animal to
the set of frequencies used in a sound. Regardless of these variations, the curves can
almost always vary non-linearly. One way to study shapes and their potential variations
is elastic shape analysis, a rich theory of which has developed over the past twenty years.
However, methods of elastic shape analysis are seldom utilized in practical applications
on real-world data, especially outside of the mathematical shape analysis community.
Our aim in this thesis is to explore some practical applications of elastic shape analysis.
To do this, we work with various types of shape data, the majority of which are based on
image datasets. As our focus is on two-dimensional curves, it is important to be able to
robustly extract contours from images, before we can apply elastic shape analysis tools.
In order to analyse the shapes in a dataset, we turn to methods of machine learning, to
investigate the applications of elastic shape analysis in classification.
In this thesis, we introduce an anthology of projects, in order to emphasise and under-
stand the potential of elastic shape analysis in practical applications. There are four main
projects in this thesis: (i) Classification of objects using outlines and the comparisons
between methods of elastic shape analysis, geometric morphometrics, and human experts,
with a focus on ancient Greek vases, (ii) Mussel species identification and a demonstra-
tion that shape may not be enough in some applications, (iii) A novel tool to monitor
the development of k ̄ak ̄ap ̄o chicks, and (iv) Classifying individual kiwi based on acoustic
data from their calls.
By combining tools from computer vision and machine learning with methods of elastic
shape analysis, we introduce a practical framework for the application of elastic shape
analysis, through a data science lens

Sonic heritage: listening to the past
History is so often told through objects, images and photographs, but the potential of sounds to reveal place and space is often neglected. Our research project ‘Sonic Palimpsest’1 explores the potential of sound to evoke impressions and new understandings of the past, to embrace the sonic as a tool to understand what was, in a way that can complement and add to our predominant visual understandings. Our work includes the expansion of the Oral History archives held at Chatham Dockyard to include women’s voices and experiences, and the creation of sonic works to engage the public with their heritage. Our research highlights the social and cultural value of oral history and field recordings in the transmission of knowledge to both researchers and the public. Together these recordings document how buildings and spaces within the dockyard were used and experienced by those who worked there. We can begin to understand the social and cultural roles of these buildings within the community, both past and present
Refining terrestrial biosphere feedbacks to climate change through precise characterization of terrestrial vegetation
Climate change is primarily driven by the human activities of fossil fuel combustion and land use change, which together result in the emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂). The terrestrial biosphere currently absorbs about a third of total anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, mostly through primary production by vegetation. The continued function of vegetation as a CO₂ sink is uncertain, as climate change has the potential to enhance or restrict the carbon uptake capacity of vegetation. Uncertainty in terrestrial vegetation function in the context of climate change, due in part to a lack of precise observations of leaf biochemistry and function with which to develop models, therefore limits the confidence of climate change projections. In its entirety, this thesis examines the potential for more precise observations of leaf function and their integration across a variety of models and observational scales. The first chapter provides an introductory overview of the subsequent four chapters and how each compliments the other. The second chapter demonstrates the role of the terrestrial biosphere in influencing the relationship between temperature change and cumulative CO₂ emissions. The third chapter provides adaptations to current radiative transfer modelling approaches to improve estimations of leaf biochemical constituents. The fourth chapter applies high spatiotemporal resolution observations of leaf phenology, the timing of leaf emergence and senescence, across North America to predict species-specific leaf phenology patterns under various emissions scenarios throughout the 21st century. The fifth chapter provides an approach to detect declines in ecosystem processes such as carbon uptake using observational leaf phenology networks. These chapter results indicate that 1) uncertainty in the land-borne fraction of carbon emissions contributes largely to uncertainty in the relationship between temperature change and emissions, 2) spectral subdomains and prior estimation of leaf structure improves leaf biochemistry
estimations, 3) leaf senescence timing may diverge between boreal and temperate species under a high emissions scenario, and 4) declines in vegetational carbon uptake can be accurately detected using quantitative phenocam-based indicators. The fundamental and technical insights provided through this thesis will facilitate more reliable and functionally resolved projections of terrestrial biosphere feedbacks to climate change
Metaverse. Old urban issues in new virtual cities
Recent years have seen the arise of some early attempts to build virtual cities,
utopias or affective dystopias in an embodied Internet, which in some respects appear to
be the ultimate expression of the neoliberal city paradigma (even if virtual). Although
there is an extensive disciplinary literature on the relationship between planning and
virtual or augmented reality linked mainly to the gaming industry, this often avoids design
and value issues. The observation of some of these early experiences - Decentraland,
Minecraft, Liberland Metaverse, to name a few - poses important questions and problems
that are gradually becoming inescapable for designers and urban planners, and allows
us to make some partial considerations on the risks and potentialities of these early virtual
cities

The 9th volume of the series Acarorum Catalogus contains lists of mites of 13 families, 225 genera and 1268 species of the superfamilies Schizoglyphoidea, Histiostomatoidea, Canestrinioidea and Hemisarcoptoidea. Most of these mites live on insects or other animals (as parasites, phoretic or commensals), some inhabit rotten plant material, dung or fungi. Mites of the families Chetochelacaridae and Lophonotacaridae are specialised to live with Myriapods (Diplopoda).
