Collaborative Verification-Driven Engineering of Hybrid Systems
Hybrid systems with both discrete and continuous dynamics are an important
model for real-world cyber-physical systems. The key challenge is to ensure
their correct functioning w.r.t. safety requirements. Promising techniques to
ensure safety seem to be model-driven engineering to develop hybrid systems in
a well-defined and traceable manner, and formal verification to prove their
correctness. Their combination forms the vision of verification-driven
engineering. Often, hybrid systems are rather complex in that they require
expertise from many domains (e.g., robotics, control systems, computer science,
software engineering, and mechanical engineering). Moreover, despite the
remarkable progress in automating formal verification of hybrid systems, the
construction of proofs of complex systems often requires nontrivial human
guidance, since hybrid systems verification tools solve undecidable problems.
It is, thus, not uncommon for development and verification teams to consist of
many players with diverse expertise. This paper introduces a
verification-driven engineering toolset that extends our previous work on
hybrid and arithmetic verification with tools for (i) graphical (UML) and
textual modeling of hybrid systems, (ii) exchanging and comparing models and
proofs, and (iii) managing verification tasks. This toolset makes it easier to
tackle large-scale verification tasks
Process Algebras
Process Algebras are mathematically rigorous languages with well defined semantics that permit describing and verifying properties of concurrent communicating systems.
They can be seen as models of processes, regarded as agents that act and interact continuously with other similar agents and with their common environment. The agents may be real-world objects (even people), or they may be artifacts, embodied perhaps in computer hardware or software systems.
Many different approaches (operational, denotational, algebraic) are taken for describing the meaning of processes. However, the operational approach is the reference one. By relying on the so called Structural Operational Semantics (SOS), labelled transition systems are built and composed by using the different operators of the many different process algebras. Behavioral equivalences are used to abstract from unwanted details and identify those systems that react similarly to external

A general theory of action languages
We present a general theory of action-based languages as a paradigm, for the description, of those computational
systems which include elements of concurrency and networking, and extend this approach
to describe dist.ributed systems and also t,o describe the interaction of a system, with an environment.
As part of this approach we introduce the Action Language as a common model for the class of nondeterministic
concurrent programming languages and define its intensional and interaction semantics
in terrors of continuous transformation of environment behavior. This semantics i.s specialized for
programs with stores, and extended to describe distributed computations
A uniform framework for modelling nondeterministic, probabilistic, stochastic, or mixed processes and their behavioral equivalences
Labeled transition systems are typically used as behavioral models of concurrent processes, and the labeled transitions define the a one-step state-to-state reachability relation. This model can be made generalized by modifying the transition relation to associate a state reachability distribution, rather than a single target state, with any pair of source state and transition label. The state reachability distribution becomes a function mapping each possible target state to a value that expresses the degree of one-step reachability of that state. Values are taken from a preordered set equipped with a minimum that denotes unreachability. By selecting suitable preordered sets, the resulting model, called ULTraS from Uniform Labeled Transition System, can be specialized to capture well-known models of fully nondeterministic processes (LTS), fully
probabilistic processes (ADTMC), fully stochastic processes (ACTMC), and of nondeterministic and probabilistic (MDP) or nondeterministic and stochastic (CTMDP) processes. This uniform treatment of different behavioral models extends to behavioral equivalences. These can be defined on ULTraS by relying on appropriate measure functions that expresses the degree of reachability of a set of states when performing
single-step or multi-step computations. It is shown that the specializations of bisimulation, trace, and testing
equivalences for the different classes of ULTraS coincide with the behavioral equivalences defined in the literature over traditional models
Making Random Choices Invisible to the Scheduler
When dealing with process calculi and automata which express both
nondeterministic and probabilistic behavior, it is customary to introduce the
notion of scheduler to solve the nondeterminism. It has been observed that for
certain applications, notably those in security, the scheduler needs to be
restricted so not to reveal the outcome of the protocol's random choices, or
otherwise the model of adversary would be too strong even for ``obviously
correct'' protocols. We propose a process-algebraic framework in which the
control on the scheduler can be specified in syntactic terms, and we show how
to apply it to solve the problem mentioned above. We also consider the
definition of (probabilistic) may and must preorders, and we show that they are
precongruences with respect to the restricted schedulers. Furthermore, we show
that all the operators of the language, except replication, distribute over
probabilistic summation, which is a useful property for verification
A Process Calculus for Spatially-explicit Ecological Models
We propose PALPS, a Process Algebra with Locations for Population Systems.
PALPS allows us to produce spatially-explicit, individual-based models and to
reason about their behavior. Our calculus has two levels: at the first level we
may define the behavior of an individual of a population while, at the second
level, we may specify a system as the collection of individuals of various
species located in space, moving through their life cycle while changing their
location, if they so wish, and interacting with each other in various ways such
as preying on each other. Furthermore, we propose a probabilistic temporal
logic for reasoning about the behavior of PALPS processes. We illustrate our

Uniform Labeled Transition Systems for Nondeterministic, Probabilistic, and Stochastic Process Calculi
Labeled transition systems are typically used to represent the behavior of
nondeterministic processes, with labeled transitions defining a one-step state
to-state reachability relation. This model has been recently made more general
by modifying the transition relation in such a way that it associates with any
source state and transition label a reachability distribution, i.e., a function
mapping each possible target state to a value of some domain that expresses the
degree of one-step reachability of that target state. In this extended
abstract, we show how the resulting model, called ULTraS from Uniform Labeled
Transition System, can be naturally used to give semantics to a fully
nondeterministic, a fully probabilistic, and a fully stochastic variant of a
