Enroute flight planning: Evaluating design concepts for the development of cooperative problem-solving concepts
The goals of this research were to develop design concepts to support the task of enroute flight planning. And within this context, to explore and evaluate general design concepts and principles to guide the development of cooperative problem solving systems. A detailed model is to be developed of the cognitive processes involved in flight planning. Included in this model will be the identification of individual differences of subjects. Of particular interest will be differences between pilots and dispatchers. The effect will be studied of the effect on performance of tools that support planning at different levels of abstraction. In order to conduct this research, the Flight Planning Testbed (FPT) was developed, a fully functional testbed environment for studying advanced design concepts for tools to aid in flight planning
Assessment of energy and emissions saving solutions in urban rail-based transport systems
Global warming and climate change are indisputable theories. Since the Industrial
Revolution, the mean temperature of the planet has increased by 1°C. Now, temperatures
are approaching a higher stage of +1.5°C and the attention is on both CO2 emissions and
energy consumption. Transportation is a major component of the environmental impact,
accounting for approximately 30% of air pollution and energy consumption. Due to the
rapid urbanization in the EU, with an estimated 74.3% of the population living in cities,
forecasted to rise to 80% by 2050, urban mobility is dramatically increasing its relevance.
Therefore, a reduction in energy consumption and pollutant emissions is a crucial factor to
consider in developing urban transportation and particularly rail-based systems, able to
provide energy saving transport services by improving urban environment. Several methods
and techniques are under development to improve the energy performance of Light Rail
Transport (LRT), which spread from different typologies of power supply to improving
energy efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to start from the last developments and
innovative energy sources for LRT systems. The focus is on two parts: a) trams running on
Hydrogen in parallel with on board batteries with energy saving control techniques, b)
potential renewable energy sources to meet power demand. The comparison is with
traditional power sources and equipment (e.g. Catenary-based). The methods, based on
selected indicators, are under development and test by calculations and simulations with
reference to the case study of the new tramlines in the city of Brescia (Italy)
An Analytic Hierarchy Process for The Evaluation of Transport Policies to Reduce Climate Change Impacts
Transport is the sector with the fastest growth of greenhouse gases emissions, both in developed and in developing countries, leading to adverse climate change impacts. As the experts disagree on the occurrence of these impacts, by applying the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), we have faced the question on how to form transport policies when the experts have different opinions and beliefs. The opinions of experts have been investigated by a means of a survey questionnaire. The results show that tax schemes aiming at promoting environmental-friendly transport mode are the best policy. This incentives public and environmental-friendly transport modes, such as car sharing and car pooling.Analytic Hierarchy Process, Transport Policies, Climate Change
Recommendation domains for pond aquaculture
This publication introduces the methods and results of a research project that has developed a set of decision-support tools to identify places and sets of conditions for which a particular target aquaculture technology is considered feasible and therefore good to promote. The tools also identify the nature of constraints to aquaculture development and thereby shed light on appropriate interventions to realize the potential of the target areas. The project results will be useful for policy planners and decision makers in national, regional and local governments and development funding agencies, aquaculture extension workers in regional and local governments, and researchers in aquaculture systems and rural livelihoods.
