Defining block character
In this paper I propose a clear, efficient, and accurate method for determining if a block of contiguous buildings has an overall character. The work is needed because most contemporary design reviews presuppose the existence of visual character, but existing design principles are often too vague to make the required determination. Clarity is achieved by shifting from vague notions to a definite concept for block character: a design feature will be perceived as part of the overall character of that block if the frequency of the feature is greater than a critical threshold. An experiment suggested that the critical frequency was quite high: over 80%. A case history illustrates how the new concept of visual character could greatly increase the efficiency and accuracy of actual planning decisions.
Mixed Data and Classification of Transit Stops
An analysis of the characteristics and behavior of individual bus stops can
reveal clusters of similar stops, which can be of use in making routing and
scheduling decisions, as well as determining what facilities to provide at each
stop. This paper provides an exploratory analysis, including several possible
clustering results, of a dataset provided by the Regional Transit Service of
Rochester, NY. The dataset describes ridership on public buses, recording the
time, location, and number of entering and exiting passengers each time a bus
stops. A description of the overall behavior of bus ridership is followed by a
stop-level analysis. We compare multiple measures of stop similarity, based on
location, route information, and ridership volume over time
Submodular Load Clustering with Robust Principal Component Analysis
Traditional load analysis is facing challenges with the new electricity usage
patterns due to demand response as well as increasing deployment of distributed
generations, including photovoltaics (PV), electric vehicles (EV), and energy
storage systems (ESS). At the transmission system, despite of irregular load
behaviors at different areas, highly aggregated load shapes still share similar
characteristics. Load clustering is to discover such intrinsic patterns and
provide useful information to other load applications, such as load forecasting
and load modeling. This paper proposes an efficient submodular load clustering
method for transmission-level load areas. Robust principal component analysis
(R-PCA) firstly decomposes the annual load profiles into low-rank components
and sparse components to extract key features. A novel submodular cluster
center selection technique is then applied to determine the optimal cluster
centers through constructed similarity graph. Following the selection results,
load areas are efficiently assigned to different clusters for further load
analysis and applications. Numerical results obtained from PJM load demonstrate

Hypernetworks for reconstructing the dynamics of multilevel systems
Networks are fundamental for reconstructing the dynamics of many systems, but have the drawback that they are restricted to binary relations. Hypergraphs extend relational structure to multi-vertex edges, but are essentially set-theoretic and unable to represent essential structural properties. Hypernetworks are a natural multidimensional generalisation of networks, representing n-ary relations by simplices with n vertices. The assembly of vertices to make simplices is key for moving between levels in multilevel systems, and integrating dynamics between levels. It is argued that hypernetworks are necessary, if not sufficient, for reconstructing the dynamics of multilevel complex systems
A Preliminary Study of Smithport Plain Bottle Morphology in the Southern Caddo Area
This study expands upon a previous analysis of the Clarence H. Webb collection, which resulted in the identification of two discrete shapes used in the manufacture of the base and body of Smithport Plain bottles. The sample includes the Smithport Plain bottles from the Webb collection, and four new bottles: two previously repatriated specimens in the Pohler Collection, and two from the Mitchell site (41BW4) to test whether those specimens align morphologically with the Belcher Mound or Smithport Landing specimens. Results indicate significant allometry and a significant difference in Smithport Plain body and base shapes for bottles produced at the Smithport Landing and Belcher Mound sites in northwest Louisiana. The Pohler and Mitchell specimens do not differ significantly from those found at Smithport Landing or Belcher Mound. Analysis of the aggregated sample indicates some significant relationships between bottle shape and size, bottle shape and type, and bottle shape and site, highlighting assemblage-level and type-specific variability. The test of morphological disparity by period indicates a gradual trend toward standardization, and the test of morphological integration indicates that Caddo bottles are significantly integrated, meaning that those discrete traits used to characterize their shape (rim, neck, body, and base) vary in a coordinated manner. The iterative development of this research design can lead to substantive theoretical gains that augment discussions of decorative components and motifs as well as ceramic technological attributes
