    Internet of Satellites (IoSat): analysis of network models and routing protocol requirements

    The space segment has been evolved from monolithic to distributed satellite systems. One of these distributed systems is called the federated satellite system (FSS) which aims at establishing a win-win collaboration between satellites to improve their mission performance by using the unused on-board resources. The FSS concept requires sporadic and direct communications between satellites, using inter satellite links. However, this point-to-point communication is temporal and thus it can break existent federations. Therefore, the conception of a multi-hop scenario needs to be addressed. This is the goal of the Internet of satellites (IoSat) paradigm which, as opposed to a common backbone, proposes the creation of a network using a peer-to-peer architecture. In particular, the same satellites take part of the network by establishing intermediate collaborations to deploy a FSS. This paradigm supposes a major challenge in terms of network definition and routing protocol. Therefore, this paper not only details the IoSat paradigm, but it also analyses the different satellite network models.     Logical topology-based routing in LEO constellations

    Satellite communication is distinguished by global coverage and the ability to support a wide range of applications. LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite systems employing inter-satellite links offer rich connectivity in space and provide direct broadband access and personal communication service. One of the technical challenges for LEO systems is the design of efficient routing strategies tailored to their highly dynamic nature. In this paper, we present a new routing method which solves the routing problem effciently by overlaying a static logical topology over the physical constellation. The algorithm generates near-optimal shortest paths. The performance of our proposed scheme is evaluated through theoretical analysis and simulations.published_or_final_versio

    On Routing for Extending Satellite Service Life in LEO Satellite Networks

    International audienceWe address the problem of routing for extending the service life of satellites in Iridium-like LEO constellations. Satellites in LEO constellations can spend over 30% of their time under the earth’s umbra, time during which they are powered by batteries. While the batteries are recharged by solar energy, the depth of discharge they reach during eclipse significantly affects their lifetime – and by extension, the service life of the satellites themselves. For batteries of the type that power Iridium satellites, a 15% increase to the depth of discharge can practically cut their service lives in half. We present two new routing metrics – LASER and SLIM – that try to strike a balance between performance and battery depth of discharge in LEO satellite constellations. Our basic approach is to leverage the deterministic movement of satellites for favoring routing traffic over satellites exposed to the sun as opposed to the eclipsed satellites, thereby decreasing the average battery depth of discharge – all without adversely affecting network performance Simulations show that LASER and SLIM can reduce the depth of discharge by about 11% and 16%, respectively, which can lead to as much as 100% increase in the satellite batteries lifetime. This is accomplished by trading off very little in terms of end-to-end delay

    Location Management in IP-based Future LEO Satellite Networks: A Review

    Future integrated terrestrial, aerial, and space networks will involve thousands of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites forming a network of mega-constellations, which will play a significant role in providing communication and Internet services everywhere, at any time, and for everything. Due to its very large scale and highly dynamic nature, future LEO satellite networks (SatNets) management is a very complicated and crucial process, especially the mobility management aspect and its two components location management and handover management. In this article, we present a comprehensive and critical review of the state-of-the-art research in LEO SatNets location management. First, we give an overview of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) mobility management standards (e.g., Mobile IPv6 and Proxy Mobile IPv6) and discuss their location management techniques limitations in the environment of future LEO SatNets. We highlight future LEO SatNets mobility characteristics and their challenging features and describe two unprecedented future location management scenarios. A taxonomy of the available location management solutions for LEO SatNets is presented, where the solutions are classified into three approaches. The "Issues to consider" section draws attention to critical points related to each of the reviewed approaches that should be considered in future LEO SatNets location management. To identify the gaps, the current state of LEO SatNets location management is summarized. Noteworthy future research directions are recommended.     Characterisation of Mega-Constellation Links for LEO Missions with Applications to EO and ISS Use Cases

    Satellite missions demand ever greater connectivity, especially in the LEO regime. In this paper, we introduce the new mega-constellation services in space paradigm: we show that mega constellations, deployed to offer innovative services to Earth’s users, can provide excellent connectivity to LEO spacecrafts, too. First, we characterise the communication link between space users and the actual OneWeb and Starlink constellations. A full set of results in terms of availability, access duration, Doppler, and path losses as a function of user orbital parameters, identifying optimal user orbits, is provided. The results achieved by a multi-system user able to communicate with both fleets are also presented. The potential improvements available if geostationary constellations are used to complement LEO mega constellations in a multi-orbit system are discussed, too. Finally, we focus on two LEO use cases, the International Space Station and an Earth Observation Sun Synchronous satellite. All the results demonstrate the numerous advantages of the mega-constellation connectivity solution, which is able to transform LEO spacecrafts into highly responsive nodes of a space-to-space networ

    Energy efficiency in LEO satellite and terrestrial wired environments

    To meet an ever-growing demand for advanced multimedia services and to support electronic connectivity anywhere on the planet, development of ubiquitous broadband multimedia systems is gaining a huge interest at both academic and industry levels. Satellite networks in general and LEO satellite constellations in particular will play an essential role in the deployment of such systems. Therefore, as LEO satellite constellations like Iridium or IridiumNEXT are extremely expensive to deploy and maintain, extending their service lifetimes is of crucial importance. In the main part of this thesis, we propose different techniques for extending satellite service life in LEO satellite constellations. Satellites in such constellations can spend over 30% of their time under the earth’s umbra, time during which they are powered by batteries. While the batteries are recharged by solar energy, the Depth of Discharge (DoD) they reach during eclipse significantly affects their lifetime – and by extension, the service life of the satellites themselves. For batteries of the type that power Iridium and Iridium-NEXT satellites, a 15% increase to the DoD can practically cut their service lives in half. We first focus on routing and propose two new routing metrics – LASER and SLIM – that try to strike a balance between performance and battery DoD in LEO satellite constellations. Our basic approach is to leverage the deterministic movement of satellites for favoring routing traffic over satellites exposed to the sun as opposed to the eclipsed satellites, thereby decreasing the average battery DoD– all without taking a significant penalty in performance. Then, we deal with resource consolidation – a new paradigm for the reduction of the power consumption. It consists in having a carefully selected subset of network links entering a sleep state, and use the rest to transport the required amount of traffic. This possible without causing major disruptions to network activities. Since communication networks are designed over the peak traffic periods, and with redundancy and over-provisioned in mind. As a remedy to these issues, we propose two different methods to perform resource consolidation in LEO networks. First, we propose trafficaware metric for quantifiying the quality of a frugal topology, the Maximum Link Utilization (MLU). With the problem being NP-hard subject to a given MLU threshold, we introduce two heuristics, BASIC and SNAP, which represent different tradeoffs in terms of performance and simplicity. Second, we propose a new lightweight traffic-agnostic metric for quantifiying the quality of a frugal topology, the Adequacy Index (ADI). After showing that the problem of minimizing the power consumption of a LEO network subject to a given ADI threshold is NP-hard, we propose a heuristc named AvOId to solve it. We evaluate both forms of resource consolidation using realistic LEO topologies and traffic requests. The results show that the simple schemes we develop are almost double the satellite batteries lifetime. Following the green networking in LEO systems, the second part of this thesis focuses on extending the resource consolidation schemes to current wired networks. Indeed, the energy consumption of wired networks has been traditionally overlooked. Several studies exhibit that the traffic load of the routers only has a small influence on their energy consumption. Hence, the power consumption in networks is strongly related to the number of active network elements. In this context, we extend the traffic-agnostic metric, ADI, to the wired networks. We model the problem subject to ADI threshold as NP-hard. Then, we propose two polynomial time heuristics – ABStAIn and CuTBAck. Although ABStAIn and CuTBAck are traffic unaware, we assess their behavior under real traffic loads from 3 networks, demonstrating that their performance are comparable to the more complex traffic-aware solutions proposed in the literature

    Unattended network operations technology assessment study. Technical support for defining advanced satellite systems concepts

    The results are summarized of an unattended network operations technology assessment study for the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). The scope of the work included: (1) identified possible enhancements due to the proposed Mars communications network; (2) identified network operations on Mars; (3) performed a technology assessment of possible supporting technologies based on current and future approaches to network operations; and (4) developed a plan for the testing and development of these technologies. The most important results obtained are as follows: (1) addition of a third Mars Relay Satellite (MRS) and MRS cross link capabilities will enhance the network's fault tolerance capabilities through improved connectivity; (2) network functions can be divided into the six basic ISO network functional groups; (3) distributed artificial intelligence technologies will augment more traditional network management technologies to form the technological infrastructure of a virtually unattended network; and (4) a great effort is required to bring the current network technology levels for manned space communications up to the level needed for an automated fault tolerance Mars communications network

    Integrating LEO Satellite Constellations into Internet Backbone

    Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations have been used for ubiquitous and flexible Internet access services. However, a number of problems related to the integration of terrestrial with satellite hosts should be resolved for the effective exploitation of LEO constellations. LEO constellations are different from terrestrial Internet because of its special properties, which result in a lot of problems. A key issue is how to route Internet packets to the LEO constellation. In the thesis (1) the background of LEO constellations was introduced; (2) the obstacles of routing between the satellites and Internet were outlined; (3) The particular problem, which must be solved, is the routing burst stream traffic in LEO satellite constellations. Two novel routing algorithmsCControl Route Transmission (CRT) and CRT with bandwidth allocation (BCRT)Cwere utilized to address the bursts routing problem. CRT is an adaptive protocol which is able to minimize the congestion in the constellations. BCRT is a CRT extension which is allowed to class the traffic (e.g. video) with different QoS requirements and guarantees. Both of CRT and BCRT work in time epochs. Routes are computed on the basis of a directed weighted graph representing the global traffic traveling in the constellations. Both CRT and BCRT were evaluated via simulation and compared with other proposals in the literatures. The results showed that CRT is a simple algorithm, but the strategy produced by CRT could avoid the congestion and enhance the global resource usage in different traffic conditions. Moreover, the explicit reservation and reroute of BCRT greatly improve the performance of CRT.
