    Mobile Networks

    The growth in the use of mobile networks has come mainly with the third generation systems and voice traffic. With the current third generation and the arrival of the 4G, the number of mobile users in the world will exceed the number of landlines users. Audio and video streaming have had a significant increase, parallel to the requirements of bandwidth and quality of service demanded by those applications. Mobile networks require that the applications and protocols that have worked successfully in fixed networks can be used with the same level of quality in mobile scenarios. Until the third generation of mobile networks, the need to ensure reliable handovers was still an important issue. On the eve of a new generation of access networks (4G) and increased connectivity between networks of different characteristics commonly called hybrid (satellite, ad-hoc, sensors, wired, WIMAX, LAN, etc.), it is necessary to transfer mechanisms of mobility to future generations of networks. In order to achieve this, it is essential to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the performance of current protocols and the diverse topologies to suit the new mobility conditions

    On the Deployment of Healthcare Applications over Fog Computing Infrastructure

    Fog computing is considered as the most promising enhancement of the traditional cloud computing paradigm in order to handle potential issues introduced by the emerging Interned of Things (IoT) framework at the network edge. The heterogeneous nature, the extensive distribution and the hefty number of deployed IoT nodes will disrupt existing functional models, creating confusion. However, IoT will facilitate the rise of new applications, with automated healthcare monitoring platforms being amongst them. This paper presents the pillars of design for such applications, along with the evaluation of a working prototype that collects ECG traces from a tailor-made device and utilizes the patient's smartphone as a Fog gateway for securely sharing them to other authorized entities. This prototype will allow patients to share information to their physicians, monitor their health status independently and notify the authorities rapidly in emergency situations. Historical data will also be available for further analysis, towards identifying patterns that may improve medical diagnoses in the foreseeable future

    This thesis presents our research on service-driven networking, which is a general design framework for service quality assurance and integrated network and service management in large scale multi-domain networks. The philosophy is to facilitate bi-party open participation among the users and the providers of network services in order to bring about better service customization and quality assurance, without sacrificing the autonomy and objectives of the individual entities. Three primary research topics are documented: service composition and adaptation, self-stabilization in uncoordinated environment, and service quality modeling.     DERIVING TECHNOLOGY ROADMAPS WITH TECH MINING TECHNIQUES

    Technology monitoring has been a knowledge intensive and time-consuming task for IT managers or domain experts. Tech mining techniques can be used to mitigate these efforts. This paper proposes a technology monitoring framework based on tech mining techniques to facilitate the derivative of information and communication technology (ICT) roadmaps. With this framework, a tech mining engine is able to allocate the most relevant documents which describe a category of technologies. Domain experts were participated in a scan meeting to verify the generated roadmaps based on the selected cluster of documents. The draft roadmaps can be further articulated with domain experts\u27 judgment for technology forecasting and assessment

    Abstract Telecom is the domain where innovation and spread of usage registered the quickest and most consistent growth in the latest ten years. Seismic event dated May 2012 in Emilia-Romagna region was a significant example of how spread and diffused presence of two PA (Public Administration) regional telecommunication networks (ERretre Regional Mobile Network for radio emergency and Lepida broadband Network) substantially contributed to address such a catastrophic situation, providing the right premises to its quick overcoming and a strategic criterion for the following reconstruction of the territory. In this situation the importance and the effectiveness of a flexible, modular and configurable regional emergency mobile network such as ERretre has been proved, but at the same time the synergies with Lepida broadband network have emerged, showing a new potential in building an enabling infrastructure not only for new services, but also for new networks

    COMPOSER: A compact open-source service platform

    Compute and network virtualization enable to deliver network services with unprecedented agility and flexibility based on (a) the programmatic placement of service functions across the available infrastructure and (b) the real-time setup of the corresponding network paths. This paper presents and validates COMPOSER, a compact, flexible and high-performance service platform for the deployment of network services. COMPOSER supports multiple virtualization engines (e.g., virtual machines, containers, native network functions) and it can use seamlessly the above different execution environments to instantiate network services belonging to different chains, hence facilitating domain-oriented orchestration and enabling the joint optimization of compute and network resources. We demonstrate that COMPOSER can run on resource-constrained hardware, such as residential gateways, as well as on high-performance servers. Finally, COMPOSER integrates optimized data plane components that enable our platform to reach top-class results with respect to data plane performance as well

    VoIP under the EU regulatory framework : preventing foreclosure?

    In June 2004, the European Commission (EC) issued an "Information and Consultation Document" (European Commission 2004) that discussed how the Regulatory Framework of the European Union (EU) should be adapted to accommodate Voice over IP (VoIP) and invited relevant parties to comment on the Consultation Document. In our study, we use the responses of the different market parties to identify how incumbents seek to foreclose the market for VoIP telephony. From these responses we conclude that foreclosure is not only attempted by setting high prices for the use of infrastructure, but also by the strategic choice of infrastructure technology, which raises the cost of entry. We label the latter form of foreclosure "technological foreclosure" – as opposed to "market foreclosure". A simple modeling exercise shows that regulators seeking to avoid market foreclosure might trigger technological foreclosure. We argue that this has happened with the unbundling of the local loop in the EU, and that it might happen again with the transition to VoIP. We conclude that the current rights and obligations assigned to telecom companies effectively protect incumbents from competition by VoIP entrants. Moreover, the inaction of regulatory authorities when it comes to numbering and communication protocols is advantageous for incumbents and might obstruct the provision of new services in the future

    Design of a UMTS/GPRS Assisted Mesh Network (UAMN)

    Wireless Mesh or multi-hop networks (WMNs) are well known thanks to its simplicity on deployment and the lack of infrastructure. These two advantages come with some drawbacks. WMNs have limitations with the support of Quality of Service (QoS), they do not assure coverage or even connectivity, and security, management and monitoring are not considered key requirements. In order to benefit of mesh networks and use them as an operator graded network, it is necessary to either improve mesh networks to fulfill all these requirements or use an alternative network that offers full availability, connectivity and security to assist the mesh network. Considering the two options, the second is the one selected making use of GPRS/UMTS as an assistant network. The document describes a set of requirements and the design of the functionalities needed to build an operator graded network using the cellular GPRS/UMTS. The aspects covered in the design are: security, quality of service, mobility, self configuration and optimization. The last point, optimization, is not directly involved with mesh networking, but it is an improvement easy to achieve when using a gateway node to access the Internet through a GPRS/UMTS connection. The design of the solution not only considers functionality, but also feasibility employing of the shelve elements. The mesh nodes and gateways are built on top of Linux operating system with the aim to reuse previous results and open source software. The final objective of the project is to build a usable system to be used as a proof of concept.Peer Reviewe
