    Demographic change and regional competitiveness: The effects of immigration and ageing

    The demographic profile of a region is usually seen as a slowly changing background phenomenon in the analysis of regional competitiveness and regional growth. However, regional demographic change can have a significant impact on regional competitiveness and such change is often more rapid and profound than at the national level. In turn, regional population size, growth, composition and distribution are endogenous to regional economic development. This paper focuses on the impact of population ageing and immigration on aspects of regional competitiveness such as innovation, entrepreneurship and productivity. Immigration and ageing trends have generated huge separate literatures but it is argued here that it is fruitful to consider these trends jointly. Theoretically, there are many channels through which immigration and population ageing can affect regional competitiveness. There is empirical evidence that population ageing reduces regional competitiveness, while immigration – particularly of entrepreneurs and highly skilled workers to metropolitan areas – enhances competitiveness. Much of the available literature is based on smallscale case studies and rigorous econometric research on the impact of demographic change at the regional level is still remarkably rare.     Valuation in health and ageing innovation practices

    In the development and deployment of health and ageing innovations, underlying values such as privacy or quality of life are often seen as a relatively stable starting point, if considered at all. However, values are neither stable nor singular. This paper introduces a valuation framework to explore the co-constitution of values and technological innovations. A careful and ongoing reflection on values and valuation, in particular in innovation practices targeted at older people, is crucial when aiming to increase sustainable innovations. Therefore, we include a Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) perspective to technological development and innovation, to understand better the construction and co-constitution of ageing-in-place technologies. This framework is developed following a review of literature on values and valuation in the broad field of SSH. The proposed valuation framework consists of three core elements: (a) value multiplicity, (b) value dynamism, and (c) valuation implications. To demonstrate potential applicability of the framework, we conducted a thought experiment on values and valuation practices related to the development and potential further deployment of a COVID-19 health app in the Netherlands. This experiment pays special attention to multiple values at stake and implications for older adults who age in place. We argue this valuation framework provokes reflection on dynamic and multiple values underlying technology use and non-use, and contributes to responsible health and ageing innovations

    Ageing of farmers in the Czech republic and the support from the EU funds

    The age structure of managers of agricultural holdings is not favourable in the Czech Republic and follows the general trend of population ageing. The lack of young farmers represents a threat to generation renewal and the competitiveness of the sector, as younger farmers tend to be more open to innovation and more often learn new approaches to farming and business. Therefore, the European Union supports generation renewal through Common Agricultural Policy instruments – direct payments and investment subsidies from the Rural Development Pro-gramme. The aim of the paper is to assess the ageing of the farm manager population and to evaluate whether the support from the EU is well targeted on the regional level based on correlation analysis. Using statistical and ad-ministrative data, we find that the subsidies from the Rural Development Programme in the year 2016 were granted in line with the seriousness of the ageing problem. When there was a larger share of older farmers in a region, the share of young farmers supported was larger. Vice versa, the correlation coefficient between the share of supported farmers and the share of young farmers in the region is negative, meaning that the greater was the share of young farmers, the smaller was the share of supported farmers

    Abstract Action Plan B3 of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) focuses on the integrated care of chronic diseases. Area 5 (Care Pathways) was initiated using chronic respiratory diseases as a model. The chronic respiratory disease action plan includes (1) AIRWAYS integrated care pathways (ICPs), (2) the joint initiative between the Reference site MACVIA-LR (Contre les MAladies Chroniques pour un VIeillissement Actif) and ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma), (3) Commitments for Action to the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing and the AIRWAYS ICPs network. It is deployed in collaboration with the World Health Organization Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD). The European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing has proposed a 5-step framework for developing an individual scaling up strategy: (1) what to scale up: (1-a) databases of good practices, (1-b) assessment of viability of the scaling up of good practices, (1-c) classification of good practices for local replication and (2) how to scale up: (2-a) facilitating partnerships for scaling up, (2-b) implementation of key success factors and lessons learnt, including emerging technologies for individualised and predictive medicine. This strategy has already been applied to the chronic respiratory disease action plan of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing

    D-STEM: a Design led approach to STEM innovation

    Advances in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) disciplines offer opportunities for designers to propose and make products with advanced, enhanced and engineered properties and functionalities. In turn, these advanced characteristics are becoming increasingly necessary as resources become ever more strained through 21st century demands, such as ageing populations, connected communities, depleting raw materials, waste management and energy supply. We need to make things that are smarter, make our lives easier, better and simpler. The products of tomorrow need to do more with less. The issue is how to maximize the potential for exploiting opportunities offered by STEM developments and how best to enable designers to strengthen their position within the innovation ecosystem. As a society, we need designers able to navigate emerging developments from the STEM community to a level that enables understanding and knowledge of the new material properties, the skill set to facilitate absorption into the design ‘toolbox’ and the agility to identify, manage and contextualise innovation opportunities emerging from STEM developments.     Innovative and Interventions Towards a Better Ageing Management

    This paper discusses interventional innovation toward a better ageing management. It is a position paper in which phases of ageing was looked into; its characteristics and innovative measures for the management of ageing from various researchers point of view were properly reviewed. All such, observation was drawn from various research paper that with an increasing aged population, cognitive disorders became a major health and social issue. It was concluded that, although cognitive decline is a normal part of ageing, there are interventional innovative measures that could be employed towards a better ageing management. It was recommended that, ageing people should participate in physical exercise, regular medical checkups; government should formulate policies favourable for the ageing people and health education for the ageing people is important.
