Uplink Age of Information of Unilaterally Powered Two-way Data Exchanging Systems
We consider a two-way data exchanging system where a master node transfers
energy and data packets to a slave node alternatively. The slave node harvests
the transferred energy and performs information transmission as long as it has
sufficient energy for current block, i.e., according to the best-effort policy.
We examine the freshness of the received packets at the master node in terms of
age of information (AoI), which is defined as the time elapsed after the
generation of the latest received packet. We derive average uplink AoI and
uplink data rate as functions of downlink data rate in closed form. The
obtained results illustrate the performance limit of the unilaterally powered
two-way data exchanging system in terms of timeliness and efficiency. The
results also specify the achievable tradeoff between the data rates of the

A Gossip Algorithm based Clock Synchronization Scheme for Smart Grid Applications
The uprising interest in multi-agent based networked system, and the numerous
number of applications in the distributed control of the smart grid leads us to
address the problem of time synchronization in the smart grid. Utility
companies look for new packet based time synchronization solutions with Global
Positioning System (GPS) level accuracies beyond traditional packet methods
such as Network Time Proto- col (NTP). However GPS based solutions have poor
reception in indoor environments and dense urban canyons as well as GPS antenna
installation might be costly. Some smart grid nodes such as Phasor Measurement
Units (PMUs), fault detection, Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS) etc.,
requires synchronous accuracy as low as 1 ms. On the other hand, 1 sec accuracy
is acceptable in management information domain. Acknowledging this, in this
study, we introduce gossip algorithm based clock synchronization method among
network entities from the decision control and communication point of view. Our
method synchronizes clock within dense network with a bandwidth limited
environment. Our technique has been tested in different kinds of network
topologies- complete, star and random geometric network and demonstrated
satisfactory performance
Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks: Delay Analysis Considering Energy Costs of Sensing and Transmission
Energy harvesting (EH) provides a means of greatly enhancing the lifetime of
wireless sensor nodes. However, the randomness inherent in the EH process may
cause significant delay for performing sensing operation and transmitting the
sensed information to the sink. Unlike most existing studies on the delay
performance of EH sensor networks, where only the energy consumption of
transmission is considered, we consider the energy costs of both sensing and
transmission. Specifically, we consider an EH sensor that monitors some status
environmental property and adopts a harvest-then-use protocol to perform
sensing and transmission. To comprehensively study the delay performance, we
consider two complementary metrics and analytically derive their statistics:
(i) update age - measuring the time taken from when information is obtained by
the sensor to when the sensed information is successfully transmitted to the
sink, i.e., how timely the updated information at the sink is, and (ii) update
cycle - measuring the time duration between two consecutive successful
transmissions, i.e., how frequently the information at the sink is updated. Our
results show that the consideration of sensing energy cost leads to an
important tradeoff between the two metrics: more frequent updates result in
