Addition law structure of elliptic curves
The study of alternative models for elliptic curves has found recent interest
from cryptographic applications, once it was recognized that such models
provide more efficiently computable algorithms for the group law than the
standard Weierstrass model. Examples of such models arise via symmetries
induced by a rational torsion structure. We analyze the module structure of the
space of sections of the addition morphisms, determine explicit dimension
formulas for the spaces of sections and their eigenspaces under the action of
torsion groups, and apply this to specific models of elliptic curves with
parametrized torsion subgroups
Radii minimal projections of polytopes and constrained optimization of symmetric polynomials
We provide a characterization of the radii minimal projections of polytopes
onto -dimensional subspaces in Euclidean space \E^n. Applied on simplices
this characterization allows to reduce the computation of an outer radius to a
computation in the circumscribing case or to the computation of an outer radius
of a lower-dimensional simplex. In the second part of the paper, we use this
characterization to determine the sequence of outer -radii of regular
simplices (which are the radii of smallest enclosing cylinders). This settles a
question which arose from the incidence that a paper by Wei{\ss}bach (1983) on
this determination was erroneous. In the proof, we first reduce the problem to
a constrained optimization problem of symmetric polynomials and then to an
optimization problem in a fixed number of variables with additional integer

Monotone Projection Lower Bounds from Extended Formulation Lower Bounds
In this short note, we reduce lower bounds on monotone projections of
polynomials to lower bounds on extended formulations of polytopes. Applying our
reduction to the seminal extended formulation lower bounds of Fiorini, Massar,
Pokutta, Tiwari, & de Wolf (STOC 2012; J. ACM, 2015) and Rothvoss (STOC 2014;
J. ACM, 2017), we obtain the following interesting consequences.
1. The Hamiltonian Cycle polynomial is not a monotone subexponential-size
projection of the permanent; this both rules out a natural attempt at a
monotone lower bound on the Boolean permanent, and shows that the permanent is
not complete for non-negative polynomials in VNP under monotone
p-projections.
2. The cut polynomials and the perfect matching polynomial (or "unsigned
Pfaffian") are not monotone p-projections of the permanent. The latter, over
the Boolean and-or semi-ring, rules out monotone reductions in one of the
natural approaches to reducing perfect matchings in general graphs to perfect
matchings in bipartite graphs.
As the permanent is universal for monotone formulas, these results also imply
exponential lower bounds on the monotone formula size and monotone circuit size

Matrix Convex Hulls of Free Semialgebraic Sets
This article resides in the realm of the noncommutative (free) analog of real
algebraic geometry - the study of polynomial inequalities and equations over
the real numbers - with a focus on matrix convex sets and their projections
. A free semialgebraic set which is convex as well as bounded and open
can be represented as the solution set of a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI), a
result which suggests that convex free semialgebraic sets are rare. Further,
Tarski's transfer principle fails in the free setting: The projection of a free
convex semialgebraic set need not be free semialgebraic. Both of these results,
and the importance of convex approximations in the optimization community,
provide impetus and motivation for the study of the free (matrix) convex hull
of free semialgebraic sets.
This article presents the construction of a sequence of LMI domains
in increasingly many variables whose projections are
successively finer outer approximations of the matrix convex hull of a free
semialgebraic set . It is based on free analogs of
moments and Hankel matrices. Such an approximation scheme is possibly the best
that can be done in general. Indeed, natural noncommutative transcriptions of
formulas for certain well known classical (commutative) convex hulls does not
produce the convex hulls in the free case. This failure is illustrated on one
of the simplest free nonconvex .
A basic question is which free sets are the projection of a free
semialgebraic set ? Techniques and results of this paper bear upon this

Projection methods in conic optimization
There exist efficient algorithms to project a point onto the intersection of
a convex cone and an affine subspace. Those conic projections are in turn the
work-horse of a range of algorithms in conic optimization, having a variety of
applications in science, finance and engineering. This chapter reviews some of
these algorithms, emphasizing the so-called regularization algorithms for
linear conic optimization, and applications in polynomial optimization. This is
a presentation of the material of several recent research articles; we aim here
at clarifying the ideas, presenting them in a general framework, and pointing
out important techniques
